We’re the perfect size for a Google office. We’re a major engineering center and a sales hub as well, so we get to work on major products. But we’re also small enough that it’s just that much easier for us to push a good idea forward.
We’re predominantly Aussies and Kiwis, but a third of us hail from overseas. We have a strong Gaygler community, and sponsor the Sydney Mardi Gras. We’re especially proud of the work done by our Crisis Response team after the 2011 Christchurch earthquake and Australia floods.
We’re located on the water in Pyrmont, with views of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks and Darling Harbour. Our building is the greenest in Sydney. Inside, we have a "living wall" made of plants, a tire swing, a library with a nap pod and some amazing coffee machines. Googlers taking a break from the office can check out a kayak or one of our two electric cars (Mitsubishi I-MiEVs).
The biggest surprise when I started at Google was how transparent the company is. It blew me away, how much information I had at my fingertips.

We’re one of the fastest-growing Google engineering hubs in the world. Our engineers have worked on Maps, Apps, Chrome and Blogger, as well as site reliability, network infrastructure, App Engine and the Go programming language. We’ve got experts in everything from HTML rendering and HTML5 to image rendering engines and 3D graphics. We also have a significant team of sales Googlers working with big advertisers in the travel industry, as well as with smaller, local advertisers.
On the engineering side, this was the birthplace of Maps. More recently, we’ve launched Docs for Android and Dynamic Views in Blogger. On the sales side, Sydney Googlers were the first to work with sales integration partners in India, increasing efficiencies there. We’ve helped tens of thousands of small and medium-sized businesses in Australia and New Zealand get online, drive traffic to their website and grow revenue. And in 2011, we hosted the 101 musicians from 33 countries selected by YouTube users to make up the YouTube Symphony Orchestra for a week-long festival of music and collaboration, culminating in a concert streamed live on YouTube from the Sydney Opera House.
We sponsor programs like the Eureka Prize for computer science innovation and the Australia and New Zealand Anita Borg Scholarships for women in engineering. We participate in Geek Girl Dinner and RoboGirls, mentoring younger women in computer science and programming. We give developers a chance to strut their stuff via events like Summer of Code, Code Jam and the Highly Open Participation Program.
We partner with organizations like the National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (NAPCAN), the Inspire Foundation (which is behind the mental-health service ReachOut.com), Bravehearts (which fights child abuse) and Hector’s World (a website promoting child cyber-safety). We host charity fundraisers. With AIME, we mentor indigenous Australians. We sponsor a program for the University of Melbourne’s Institute for a Broadband Enabled Future to encourage innovation. We partnered with AARNet to launch Measurement Lab tools. And our Crisis Response team responded to the Queensland and Victoria floods and Victoria bush fires with innovative technology designed to save lives.
Australia’s known for sharks. Come visit us, and you’ll see why – we’re that good at pool. Come ready to play. Our engineers rigged cameras over the tables to stream matches and wrote an algorithm ranking us based on our performance against specific opponents. We’ve also got foosball, ping pong and a complete library of video games. If we want to get out of the office, we can check out a bike or kayak – or an electric car.
