Denkhaus, 1995 - 79 Seiten
Surveys the history of the Jews in northern Swabia, from the 4th century until the Holocaust. Deals with persecutions and expulsions from the late Middle Ages until the beginning of the 19th century. Mentions the pogroms during the Crusades and the "Black Death" of 1348-49, when Jews were accused of ritual murder and well-poisoning. These first medieval persecutions caused the emigration of an important part of the Jewish population to Eastern Europe, mainly Poland. From the 15th century, for almost 300 years, there were restrictions on Jewish settlement in most towns of the area. Jews could live only in the countryside or in "Jewish villages" where they were not allowed to possess land or practice a trade. During the Nazi period at least 8,500 Jews from the Baden-Württemberg area perished during the Holocaust. Pp. 61-78 contain photographs of former Jewish buildings, memorials, and cemeteries.
