Abstract

A package configured to receive a food item for storage and heating therein is disclosed. The package includes an opening and a closure mechanism and comprises heat insulating, microwave energy interactive material. A plurality of packages in a stacked relation is also provided.

Claims (28)

1. A package for receiving a food item for storage and heating therein, the package comprising:
at least one opening;
at least one mechanism for closing the at least one opening; and a microwave energy interactive insulating material.
2. The package of claim 1, further comprising at least one vent to permit the passage of water vapor from the package.
3. The package of claim 1, further comprising an interior surface on which the food item is placed, wherein the interior surface proximate the opening includes an adhesive material covering at least a portion thereof.
4. The package of claim 1, wherein the closure mechanism comprises a zipper or slider.
5. The package of claim 1, wherein the closure mechanism comprises a flap extending from an open end of the package, and wherein the flap:
(a) is adapted to be inserted into the opening;
(b) includes a mechanism for releasably sealing the package;
(c) includes an adhesive material covering at least a portion of the flap for releasably sealing the package;
(d) includes an adhesive material covering at least a portion of the flap, wherein the flap is adapted to be folded over the opening to bring the adhesive into contact with an exterior surface of the package;
(e) includes a tab that communicates with a corresponding slot in the package; or (f) any combination thereof.
6. The package of claim 1, comprising a sleeve having two open ends, the sleeve having an interior surface comprising an adhesive covering at least a portion thereof for substantially scaling the sleeve.
7. The package of claim 1, wherein the microwave energy interactive insulating material comprises a plurality expandable insulating cells at least partially defined by a susceptor material.
8. The package of claim 1, wherein the microwave energy interactive insulating material is formed at least partially from a barrier film.
9. The package of claim 8, wherein the barrier film comprises ethylene vinyl alcohol, barrier nylon, polyvinylidene chloride, barrier fluoropolymer, nylon 6, nylon 66, coextruded nylon 6/ethylene vinyl alcohol/nylon 6, silicon oxide coated film, or any combination thereof.
10. The package of claim 8, wherein the barrier film has an oxygen transmission rate of less than about 1 cc/m2/day.
11. A plurality of packages according to claim I, stacked in a face-to-face relation.
12. The plurality of packages of claim 11 in a carton, the carton comprising an open portion through which the packages may be removed or dispensed.
13. A package for receiving a food item for storage and heating therein, the package comprising:

a first panel and a second panel joined along respective substantially opposed edges to define a sleeve having at least one open end; and at least one closure mechanism for closing the open end, wherein at least a portion of the first panel and at least a portion of the second panel comprise a microwave energy interactive insulating material.
14. The package of claim 13, further comprising at least one vent to permit the passage of water vapor from the sleeve.
15. The package of claim 13, further comprising an interior surface on which the food item is placed, wherein the interior surface proximate the open end includes an adhesive material covering at least a portion thereof.
16. The package of claim 13, wherein the closure mechanism comprises a flap extending from the open end of the sleeve, wherein the flap:
(a) is adapted to be inserted into the open end;
(b) includes a mechanism for releasably sealing the sleeve;
(c) includes an adhesive material covering at least a portion of the flap;
(d) is adapted to be folded over the open end such that the adhesive contacts an exterior surface of the sleeve, or (e) any combination thereof.
17, A plurality of sleeves according to claim 16, stacked in a face-to-face relation.
18. The plurality of sleeves of claim 17 in a carton, the carton comprising an open portion through which the sleeves may be removed or dispensed.
19. A package for storing and heating a food item, comprising:
a plurality of adjoined panels at least partially defining a cavity, the plurality of panels including a pair of opposed panels, wherein each of the opposed panels comprises a microwave energy interactive insulating material.
20. The package of claim 19, wherein the microwave energy interactive insulating material includes:
a susceptor film comprising a microwave energy interactive material supported on a first polymeric film;
a moisture-containing layer superposed with the microwave energy interactive material; and a second polymeric film joined to the moisture-containing layer in a predetermined pattern, thereby forming at least one closed cell between the moisture-containing layer and the second polymeric film.
21. The package of claim 20, wherein the microwave energy interactive material comprises aluminum, indium tin oxide, or any combination thereof.
22. The package of claim 19, wherein the microwave energy interactive insulating material comprises:
a metallized polymeric film superposed with a moisture-containing layer; and a second polymeric film joined to the moisture-containing layer in a predefined pattern, thereby forming a plurality of closed microwave energy interactive insulating cells between the moisture-containing layer and the second polymeric film.
23. The package of claim 19, wherein at least some of the microwave energy interactive insulating cells inflate in response to thermal energy.
24. The package of claim 19, wherein at least a portion of the microwave energy interactive insulating material expands in response to microwave energy.
25. The package of claim 19, further comprising an opening dimensioned to accommodate the food item.
26. The package of claim 19, including a mechanism for closing the opening.
27. A storage, browning, and/or crisping pouch comprising:
a plurality of panels joined along respective edges to define a cavity having at least one open end, the plurality of panels including a first panel and a second panel in an opposed relation; and a closure mechanism for substantially sealing the open end, wherein each of the first panel and the second panel is at least partially formed from a microwave energy interactive insulating material including a plurality of expandable cells defined at least partially by a metallized polymeric film comprising aluminum, indium tin oxide, or any combination thereof, and the closure mechanism comprises a flap extending from the open end of the pouch.
28. The storage, browning, and/or crisping pouch of claim 27, wherein the flap:

(a) is adapted to be inserted into the open end;
(b) includes a mechanism for releasably sealing the pouch;
(c) comprises an adhesive material covering at least a portion of the flap; or (d) any combination thereof.
