Abstract

A system and method for formatting an electronic document. Format preference information related to the format of a user network site associated with a user is received. Document format criteria based on the format preference information and format performance information is automatically determined. An electronic document associated with the user network site is output according to the document format criteria.

Claims (35)

1. A method for formatting an electronic document, comprising:

receiving format preference information related to the format of a user network site associated with a user;

automatically determining document format criteria based on the format preference information; and outputting an electronic document associated with the user network site according to the document format criteria.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the format preference information comprises information about one or more colors associated with the user network site.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein the format preference information comprises information about a size or layout of one or more objects in a webpage associated with the user network site.
4. The method of claim 1, wherein the document format criteria specifies at least one color comprised in the electronic document.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein the document format criteria specifies at least one size of at least one object comprised in the electronic document.
6. The method of claim 1, wherein the document format criteria specifies at least one location of at least one object relative to at least one other object comprised in the electronic document.
7. The method of claim 1, wherein the document format criteria specifies a timing of display for at least one object comprised in the electronic document.
8. The method of claim 1, wherein the format criteria is determined based on and format performance information.
9. The method of claim 8, wherein the format performance information comprises information based on performances of one or more documents output according to a plurality of different output formats.
10. The method of claim 1, wherein the electronic document comprises a website having one or more advertisements formatted according to the document format criteria.
11. The method of claim 10, wherein the format performance information comprises information based on the click through rate of one or more advertisements having a particular format attribute.
12. The method of claim 10, wherein the particular format attribute relates to at least one of a position, size, color, and a time factor related to display of the one or more advertisements.
13. The method of claim 1, wherein the format performance information comprises information based on a difference between (i) an aggregate click through rate of one or more advertisements having one particular format attribute and (ii) an aggregate click through rate of one or more advertisements having at least one different format attribute.
14. The method of claim 1, wherein the user network site comprises a user webpage, and wherein the document format criteria defines a template for displaying one or more advertisements in the user webpage so that the one or more advertisements are displayed according to the template.
15. The method of claim 1, wherein the user network site comprises a blog site administrated by at least one human user.
16. The method of claim 1, wherein the user network site is associated with a user.
17. The method of claim 16, wherein the format preference information is received from the user during a setup of the user network site.
18. The method of claim 17, wherein the electronic document is output to the user during the setup of the user network site.
19. The method of claim 1, wherein the format preference information is received during a user network site setup process guided by a software setup wizard.
20. The method of claim 19, wherein the software setup wizard automatically determines the document format criteria based on a plurality of user inputs.

20. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving from an entity a request for content associated with the user network site;
selecting one or more electronic documents based on a relevance to at least one of the request and concepts associated with the user network site; and causing the one or more electronic documents to be output to the entity according to the document format criteria.
21. The method of claim 20, wherein the selected one or more electronic documents comprise one or more advertisements.
22. The method of claim 20, wherein the one or more concepts associated with the user network site comprise at least one keyword identified by the user.
23. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

wherein the electronic document is output to the user in response to a request for content accessible at the user network site.
24. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a request for a document associated with the user network site;
25. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

selecting an electronic document based on the request and content associated with the user network site.
26. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing the electronic document in a webpage associated with the user network site and formatted according to the document format criteria.
27. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of outputting the electronic document occurs during a setup of the user network site.
28. The method of claim 1, wherein the document performance criteria comprises information about at least one of a bid, a cost per click, and a click through rate associated with one or more advertisements.
29. The method of claim 1, wherein the format preference information comprises information about a user's preference regarding the location of a plurality of electronic document objects on a user's webpage.
30. A system for formatting an electronic document, comprising:

an input device that receives format preference information related to the format of a user network site associated with a user;

a format determination processor that automatically determines document format criteria based on the format preference information; and a server that causes an electronic document associated with the user network site to be output according to the document format criteria.
31. A method for formatting an electronic document, comprising:

determining format performance information related to the format of a user network site associated with a user;

automatically determining document format criteria based on the format performance information; and outputting an electronic document associated with the user network site according to the document format criteria.
32. The method of claim 31, wherein the format performance information comprises information based on performances of one or more documents output according to a plurality of different output formats.
33. A system for formatting an electronic document, comprising:

an determination module that determines format performance information related to the format of a user network site associated with a user;

a format determination processor that automatically determines document format criteria based on the format performance information; and a server that causes an electronic document associated with the user network site to be output according to the document format criteria.
34. The system of claim 33, wherein the format performance information comprises information based on performances of one or more documents output according to a plurality of different output formats
35. A method for formatting an electronic document, comprising:

receiving format preference information related to the format of a website from a user during setup of the website, the format preference information comprising information about at least one of the size, layout, shape, color, and timing of display of at least one object to be output via the website;

automatically determining advertisement format criteria for the website based on the format preference information and format performance information, wherein the format performance information comprises information about the performance of a plurality of advertisements having a plurality of different formats;

receiving from an entity a request for content associated with the website;
selecting one or more advertisements based on a relevance to a concept associated with the website and a rank based on a bid; and causing the one or more advertisements to be output via the website according to the advertisement format criteria.
