Abstract
A controller (110) for controlling a transceiver having a laser transmitter and a photodiode receiver. The controller includes memory (120, 122, 128) for storing information related to the transceiver, and analog to digital conversion circuitry (127) for receiving a plurality of analog signals from the laser transmitter and photodiode receiver, converting the received analog signals into digital values, and storing the digital values in predefined locations within the memory. Comparison logic (131) compares one or more of these digital values with limit values, generates flag values based on the comparisons, and stores the flag values in predefined locations within the memory. Control circuitry (123-1, 123-2) in the controller controls the operation of the laser transmitter in accordance with one or more values stored in the memory. A serial interface (121) is provided to enable a host device to read from and write to locations within the memory. Excluding a small number of binary input and output signals, all control and monitoring functions of the transceiver are mapped to unique memory mapped locations within the controller. A plurality of the control functions and a plurality of the monitoring functions of the controller are exercised by a host computer by accessing corresponding memory mapped locations within the controller.
Claims (22)
1. An optoelectronic transceiver comprising:
an optoelectronic transmitter;
an optoelectronic receiver;
memory configured to store digital values representative of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and an interface configured to:
receive from a host a request for data associated with a particular memory address; and respond to the host with a specific digital value of the digital values, where the specific digital value is associated with the particular memory address received form the host.
an optoelectronic transmitter;
an optoelectronic receiver;
memory configured to store digital values representative of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and an interface configured to:
receive from a host a request for data associated with a particular memory address; and respond to the host with a specific digital value of the digital values, where the specific digital value is associated with the particular memory address received form the host.
2. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the stored digital values include digital values representative of the following operating conditions: a temperature of said optoelectronic transceiver, an internal supply voltage of said optoelectronic transceiver, a laser bias current of said optoelectronic transmitter, an output power of said optoelectronic transmitter.
3. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the optoelectronic transceiver further comprises analog to digital conversion circuitry configured to:
receive a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to the operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and convert the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in the memory.

4. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the optoelectronic transmitter is a laser transmitter and the optoelectronic receiver is a photodiode receiver.
5. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the optoelectronic transceiver further comprises:
a laser driver electrically coupled to the optoelectronic transmitter; and a post amplifier electrically coupled to the optoelectronic receiver.

6. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the optoelectronic transceiver further comprises comparison logic configured to compare the digital values with limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored as digital values in the memory.
7. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 6, wherein the flag values include:
a high temperature warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag, a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag, a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter power warning flag, a low transmitter bias warning flag; a high received optical power warning flag, and a low received optical power warning flag.

8. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 6, wherein the flag values include:
a high temperature warning flag, a high laser bias current warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, and a low laser bias current warning flag.

9. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 6, wherein the flag values include:
a high temperature alarm flag, a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag, a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag, a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter power alarm flag, a low transmitter bias alarm flag; a high received optical power alarm flag, and a low received optical power alarm flag.

10. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter disable input pin.
11. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a rate select input pin.
12. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter fault output pin.
13. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a loss of signal output pin.
14. The optoelectronic transceiver of claim 1, wherein the optoelectronic transceiver further comprises:
analog to digital conversion circuitry configured to:
receive a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to the operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and convert the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in the memory; and comparison logic configured to compare the digital values with limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored in the memory, and wherein the memory, interface, analog to digital conversion circuitry, and comparison logic are incorporated into a single integrated circuit.

receive a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to the operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and convert the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in the memory; and comparison logic configured to compare the digital values with limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored in the memory, and wherein the memory, interface, analog to digital conversion circuitry, and comparison logic are incorporated into a single integrated circuit.
15. A method of monitoring an optoelectronic transceiver that includes a optoelectronic transmitter, optoelectronic receiver, and memory, the method comprising:
storing in memory digital values representative of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver;
receiving from a host external to the optoelectronic transceiver a request for data associated with a particular memory address; and responding to the host with a specific digital value of the digital values, where the specific digital value is associated with the particular memory address received form the host.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising, prior to the storing:
receiving a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to the operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and converting the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in the memory.
receiving a plurality of analog signals from one or more components of the optoelectronic transceiver, the analog signals corresponding to the operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver; and converting the analog signals into the digital values that are stored in the memory.
17. The method of claim 15, further comprising comparing the digital values with limit values to generate flag values, and storing the flag values as digital values in memory.
18. The method of claim 15, wherein the digital values are representative of the following operating conditions: a temperature of said optoelectronic transceiver, an internal supply voltage of said optoelectronic transceiver, a laser bias current of said optoelectronic transmitter, an output power of said optoelectronic transmitter.
19. The method of claim 15, further comprising comparing the digital values with limit values to generate flag values, wherein the flag values are stored as digital values in the memory.
20. The method of claim 15, wherein the flag values include: a high temperature warning flag, a low temperature warning flag, a high internal supply voltage warning flag, a low internal supply voltage warning flag, a high transmitter bias current warning flag, a low transmitter bias current warning flag, a high transmitter power warning flag, a low transmitter bias warning flag; a high received optical power warning flag, a low received optical power warning flag, a high temperature alarm flag, a low temperature alarm flag, a high internal supply voltage alarm flag, a low internal supply voltage alarm flag, a high transmitter bias current alarm flag, a low transmitter bias current alarm flag, a high transmitter power alarm flag, a low transmitter bias alarm flag; a high received optical power alarm flag, a low received optical power alarm flag.
21. The method of claim 15, wherein the digital values include a digital state of a transmitter disable input pin, a digital state of a rate select input pin, a digital state of a transmitter fault output pin, and a digital state of a loss of signal output pin.
22. An optoelectronic transceiver comprising:
an optoelectronic transmitter;
an optoelectronic receiver;
a temperature sensor that provides a temperature signal representative of a temperature of the optoelectronic transceiver;
a power supply voltage sensor that provides a power supply signal representative of an internal power supply voltage of the optoelectronic transceiver;
an output power monitor that provides an output power signal representative of an output power of the optoelectronic transmitter;
comparison logic that compares at least one of the temperature signal, power supply signal and output power signal to respective preset values and sets respective flags when the comparison is outside a respective range;
memory configured to store data representative of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver, the data including one or more of the flags, each of which is associated with a respective predefined address; and an interface configured to:
receive from a host a request for data associated with a particular predefined memory address; and respond to the host with a specific data item associated with the particular predefined memory address received from the host.
an optoelectronic transmitter;
an optoelectronic receiver;
a temperature sensor that provides a temperature signal representative of a temperature of the optoelectronic transceiver;
a power supply voltage sensor that provides a power supply signal representative of an internal power supply voltage of the optoelectronic transceiver;
an output power monitor that provides an output power signal representative of an output power of the optoelectronic transmitter;
comparison logic that compares at least one of the temperature signal, power supply signal and output power signal to respective preset values and sets respective flags when the comparison is outside a respective range;
memory configured to store data representative of operating conditions of the optoelectronic transceiver, the data including one or more of the flags, each of which is associated with a respective predefined address; and an interface configured to:
receive from a host a request for data associated with a particular predefined memory address; and respond to the host with a specific data item associated with the particular predefined memory address received from the host.
