背景
本发明一般涉及宽带内容分发。
宽带内容分发可以包括向大量接收机分发电视节目以及分发其它形式的内容。可适合于广泛分发的内容包括视频、图形、软件、音频以及游戏。
在许多情况下,能够针对内容向用户收费意味着可分发的那种类型的内容可能是较高质量的。因此,按每次观看电视节目付费是广泛接受的。
但是,现在对免费内容分发有相当大的需求。常规的电视广播通过广告片资助分发。类似地,在与因特网连接时,大量内容是免费分发的,希望观众支持为伴随内容的标题广告付费的广告商。
因此,希望将广告素材或其它中断包含在各种各样内容期间,这些内容可在宽带分发网络中进行免费分发或降低付费地分发。但是,许多内容格式并不适合于即期加入广告素材。例如,游戏和软件能够与标题广告一起分发。但是,广告的全屏显示通常是不可行的,因为无法知道在电子游戏和软件运行期间何时插入这些广告。
因此,就需要一种方法,在数字宽带分发系统中分发的各种内容中提供临时中断,例如用于插入广告。

图1所示的数字宽带分发网络10可以在内容接收器16上实现各种内容格式的分发以及内容中断的提供。内容接收器16从内容发送器12接收内容,内容发送器12又从内容提供方14接收广播内容。
发送器12所传送的内容可以包括称作“可中断内容”及“中断内容”的传统内容。可中断内容是一种内容,它的操作、播放或使用可以为其它内容的代替而中断。暂时代替可中断内容的内容称作中断内容。
根据一个实施例,用户希望接收的可中断内容可以用中断内容来中断,其中所述中断内容可有助于为所述可中断内容付费。中断内容可以包括广告。
可中断内容可以是视频、图形、音频、游戏以及其它如应用软件之类的软件。在一个实施例中,中断内容可以在接收器16的控制下代替可中断内容。

节目指南24可以提供可从内容提供方14接收的可用信息的时间表。这种信息可以通过如因特网26之类的反向信道进行访问,以便减少对内容接收器16的存储要求。通过反向信道接收的或者由调谐器/解调器18分析的中断指令可以通过内容指南24转发给外壳22。在本发明的一个实施例中,外壳22可以是一种软件模块,用于控制从广播内容提供方14接收的内容的使用。此外,外壳22根据如上所述地接收的中断指令,采用中断内容来实现可中断内容的中断。
加密高速缓存20以防止未经授权者解密和盗用的格式存储内容。例如,加密高速缓存20可以是硬盘驱动器的一部分。当内容由系统10接收时,外壳22将信息存储在硬盘驱动器上,具体来说是加密高速缓存中。例如,外壳22可以使内容分发给硬盘驱动器上的各种存储单元,使得不能在一片邻接的硬盘驱动器区域中连续访问该内容。只有外壳22能够访问指明内容存储在硬盘驱动器上哪个位置以及如何能够重构它而以有意义的方式重放内容的映射。
因此,当从源中获取内容并通过外壳存储到硬盘驱动器中时,它以一种此后只能由外壳访问的形式进行存储。要访问该内容,必须通过外壳来访问内容,因为只有外壳知道该内容的所有部分所存储的位置以及如何以有意义的方式将其重构。这样,外壳能够以各种方式控制访问。例如,外壳能够防止访问,外壳能够仅作为对观看商业广告或付费的回报才提供访问,否则,外壳可以限制可查看内容的次数、甚至可查看内容的时间。
因此,在图1所示的实施例中,外壳22可以具有内容,作为一些实例,比如游戏或可租赁的软件。当用户希望使用从内容提供方14可获得的内容时,用户可以请求下载该信息,或者在高带宽利用度的条件下可以传送该信息。或者,可以采用其它方案向接收器16提供内容。一般,传输机制可以包括任何数字机制,比如卫星传输、电缆传输或无线电波广播。
可以知道,内容还可以按照诸如小型光盘(CD-ROM)、数字视盘(DVD)、闪速存储器之类的传统物理、便携形式来提供。无论用何种方式接收,内容都以这样的方式进行编码,即,如果不使用外壳22,就无法使用、收听、观看、播放或者说欣赏内容。这样,系统利用与通过传输媒体传送的或用户以物理形式接收的内容一起提供的加密,以一种安全方式来控制对内容的访问。
一旦信息已经存储在高速缓存20中,用户就可从外壳22接收欣赏、播放、收听或观看内容的权限,视情况而定。外壳22则释放信息,以适当的格式供基于处理器的内容接收器16上使用。外壳22还可以控制可使用内容的次数或时段。
此外,外壳22监视确定何时用中断内容来中断内容的使用的条件。这样,外壳22可以强加一种机制,其中,中断内容可以暂时代替可中断内容进行播放。例如,广告可以与可中断内容一起提供。或者,可以通过不同的机制在不同时间接收中断和可中断内容。
例如,中断内容能够按一定间隔插入。换句话说,中断内容可在出现有利条件时插入。例如,在与游戏软件结合时,当用户到达某个停止点时,系统可以确定该动作已经充分地暂停,可以插入中断内容。此外,内容可以逐级方式插入,而不是线性地插入中断内容。这样,用户越多地使用内容,可以代入中断内容的比率就越高。
在本发明的一个实施例中,正在播放的内容可以通过实时播放商业广告来中断。也就是说,当商业广告通过广播媒体进行广播时,也可以自动地插入系统10上内容的播放中。
在本发明的一个实施例中,可中断内容可以是广告;但是,中断内容也可以是用户进行某种形式的付费以便继续使用可中断内容的请求。例如,可以要求接收器16访问反向信道,以便对内容的继续使用进行付费。当接收器16这样动作时,接收器16可以通过反向信道或者从允许继续使用可中断内容的内容提供方获得代码。
在本发明的一些实施例中,可以采用一些技术来减少系统10的用户在播放商业广告时中断其使用的可能性。例如,可以在商业广告上提供一个重叠图,指示将出现在内容中的是什么。例如,在内容为游戏的情况下,当用户到达给定层之后插入商业广告,例如在正在播放的商业广告上将有关下一层的信息作为覆盖图提供。

在某些情况下,大量的内容最终可以被下载或被获取,并存储在与系统10相联系的存储媒体中。例如,在传统的系统中,存储媒体可以是硬盘驱动器。因此,对于用户了解在用户的硬盘驱动器中已经储存了什么内容是有用的。可以汇编一个文件,为用户提供一个内容指南,其中列出仍可用来通过外壳22进行访问的全部内容。这样,用户可以通过选择内容指南中项目之一来选择该内容。例如,可以通过鼠标点击内容指南中的条目对其进行选择,使该内容立即开始播放。
