Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a device for the conversion of periodically pulsed, electromagnetic radiation, which is based on the use of an acousto-optic deflector.
Ordnung bezeichnet. Der gebeugte Lichtstrahl L1, welcher zum Lichtstrahl 0. Ordnung einen Winkel von +2θ aufweist, wird als +1. Beugungsordnung bezeichnet – siehe
AODs finden u.a. Currently, applications in data carrier development are increasingly following. In all areas the AOD is used due to the achievable, very high deflection speeds in the order of 10 4 ... 10 5 rad / s. As a comparison, typical galvanometer scanners reach only 10 2 rad / s. Using two mutually orthogonally aligned AODs, beam guidance into two orthogonal spatial axes is made possible. In this case, the diffraction efficiency after passing through both AODs is reduced to (70% to 85%) 2 ≈ 50% to 75%.
The cylindrical lens effect is a generally unwanted effect, which is compensated in the application by a number of measures. A common method is the use of an additional cylindrical lens shortly after beam exit from the AOD with exactly the negative refractive power of the cylindrical lens effect. However, this compensation method is optimally set only for a single state of df / dt. Another compensation method is the use of a second (compensation) AOD. This is used shortly after the first AOD and applied at the same center frequency with exactly the negative frequency gradient. With correct interpretation of the total system, ie, the first AOD forms in the +1. Diffraction order, the second AOD in the -1. Diffraction order, the cylindrical lens effect for all states is reduced to a minimum.
The same method is also used to realize no beam deflection, but the effect of an adjustable cylindrical lens. In this case, both AODs are in the +1. Diffraction order. In the latter case, the second AOD does not compensate for the cylinder lens effect, but the actual distraction.
A serious disadvantage of the latter methods is twice the number of AODs required for the deflection. A typical two-dimensional scan field would require a total of four AODs. In addition to doubling the investment costs, the diffraction efficiency after passing through all AODs is reduced to typically (70% ... 85%) 4 ≈ 25% ... 50%. For use in microscopy and laser projection, these are unwanted, but initially accepted losses, which are compensated by a higher input power.
In laser material processing, however, power losses on this scale are unacceptable since the process efficiency is reduced to approximately the same extent in terms of processing time.
For a better understanding of the further embodiments of the invention, it is also worth mentioning that AODs are also used as fast spectral analyzers. In this case, a continuous wave laser beam is deflected by the AOD in the 1st diffraction order. As a sound wave, the signal to be analyzed and usually periodic signal is then coupled.
Accordingly, portions of the laser beam equivalent to the frequency spectrum are deflected differently. Via a lens, the angle spectrum can be converted into a location spectrum, which then corresponds to a Fourier level, ie the frequency spectrum of the signal analyzed.
It is also possible to vary the sonic wave frequency so as to result in beam forming, such as reshaping a Gaussian beam profile into a so-called top-hat beam profile. It should be noted that no temporal synchronization takes place, so that the deflected by the AOD beam in the beam profile fluctuates greatly. Only the temporal integration of this fluctuation leads to a top hat or other desired beam profile. Variations of this method are used to implement fast optical switches. In this case, a sound wave frequency jump is used synchronously to an incoming optical signal. Within a pulse-to-pulse pause, the sound wave frequency hopping (| df / dt | >> 0) is performed such that the acoustic wave at a set frequency passes through the complete aperture of the AOD before the next pulse enters the AOD crystal , The consequence is that the subsequent pulse is deflected when passing through the AOD to another location, although no cylindrical lens effect takes place, since at the moment of passage no lateral frequency gradient is present.
Even if the cylindrical lens effect is thus bypassed in principle, this method is not yet in use for laser material processing. If the sound wave coupled into the AOD crystal is amplitude-modulated synchronously to laser pulses, individual portions of the lateral beam profile can be masked out. This method is currently used in so-called pulse shapers, which are devices which transform the temporal course of an ultrashort laser pulse with a sufficiently high bandwidth, usually> 10 nm.
The state of the art in connection with ultrashort pulse lasers in microstructuring and microscopy is to be outlined as follows. Both in the fields of "microstructuring" and "microscopy" ultrashort pulse lasers (UKP lasers) are increasingly being used as beam sources. Typical pulse duration ranges in these application fields are in the range of 100 fs to about 10 ps. In terms of microstructuring, UKP lasers produce precise and almost melt-free (so-called athermal) machining results in almost any material, with typically the process efficiency in terms of material removal rate with the average power of the lasers used scaled, as long as certain parameters are maintained, ie, a sufficiently low pulse overlap of <90% (which requires a repetition rate of about 100 kHz to 1 MHz when using galvanometer scanners) and a fluence just above the ablation threshold (which results in a pulse energy of typically 10 μJ to 100 μJ conditionally). At the moment, the useful mean power is about 100 W. It is remarkable that UKP lasers with a mean high power output of> 1 kW are available in principle, but these are hardly used in microstructuring. The reason for this lies in the interaction of the individual pulses with each other. At about 1 MHz repetition rate or below 1 μs pulse-to-pulse pause, a pulse interacts with the material vapor and plasma produced by the previous pulse in the form of absorption, scattering, and reflection. The result is, among other things, an increasing introduction of thermal energy into the material with the repetition rate. Unwanted melting and material throw-ups are the result.
A current approach to overcome this problem is to laterally separate the individual pulses on the workpiece so as to prevent interaction with the previous pulses. For this purpose, high deflection speeds of approximately ≥ 40 m / s are generally used. Periodic microstructures may e.g. be realized by adapted scanning or screening methods (so-called direct structuring). A much more efficient method is the use of multi-beam interference in ultrashort laser pulses. The single laser pulse interferes with itself in the working plane in such a way that the desired, periodic structures are generated. Achievable structure sizes are currently approximately in the range of the wavelength used in this method. However, experience from lithography shows that structure sizes below the wavelength are possible in principle.
In microscopy, UKP lasers are mainly used in multi-photon fluorescence microscopy. The laser beam is focused so that a fluorescence of the medium under investigation is not caused by linear absorption, but only with simultaneous absorption of two (rarely more) photons. By utilizing threshold effects, the lateral and laser beam coaxial resolution is improved. Since fluorescence microscopy is a halftoning process, a high refresh rate is usually ensured by a high sweep rate. AODs are therefore increasingly used and sometimes very complex systems are used to compensate for the cylindrical lens effect. As already mentioned, this includes the use of four AODs, which doubles investment costs and halves achievable diffraction efficiencies.

Starting from the well-described environment of the prior art and the resulting problems in the use of AODs in the field of microstructuring and microscopy, the invention has the object to provide a device for forming periodically pulsed electromagnetic radiation, with the help of which targeted this radiation and in particular optimally adaptable to the conditions of use in microstructuring and microscopy.
- A radiation source for generating a pulsed, electromagnetic radiation,
- A photodetector for the time-resolved detection of the pulses of the pulsed, electromagnetic radiation,
- A triggerable signal source coupled to the photodetector for generating sound waves having a frequency-modulated control waveform having an arbitrarily adjustable course of the acoustic wave frequency gradient, and
- An acousto-optic deflector which is connected to the signal source for coupling to one or more such sound waves synchronized in time with the periodicity of the pulsed electromagnetic radiation, such that at the time of passage of the pulsed electromagnetic radiation through the acousto-optic deflector a refractive and / or diffractive beam shaping and / or beam deflection of the periodically pulsed, electromagnetic radiation takes place.
Due to the activation of the acoustooptic deflector according to the invention, a frequency gradient in the control signal form caused by the frequency modulation can be used during the pauses between the individual radiation pulses such that the AOD aperture is filled with an adjustable Gittefrequenzgradienten. In this case, the time-synchronized with the periodicity of the radiation pulses coupling is important so that different portions of the lateral beam profile of the subsequent radiation pulse are deflected to different locations. This achieves an adjustable beam shaping.
The temporal synchronization of the laser pulse and the beginning of the control waveform is also important in the coupling of multiple, superimposed frequencies in the AOD for diffractive beam shaping, similar to an AOD spectral analyzer, as will become apparent from the description of embodiments and not to avoid repetition should be explained specifically.
Further, it is advantageous if a partially transmissive mirror in the beam path of this radiation is used for branching off part of the radiation to the photodetector (claim 3).
By further development of the invention provided according to
A similar result can also be achieved by the preferred embodiment of the device according to
The invention further allows according to
Further optical measures for targeted processing of the transformed radiation according to claim 7, the use of a wave plate in front of a respective AOD before, for example, to adjust the polarization type and direction of the laser beam with respect to an optimal diffraction efficiency of the two AODs.
According to a further preferred embodiment of the invention according to
The device according to the invention also includes the refractive beam shaping in such a way that portions of the lateral beam profile are imaged onto each other and thus an interferometric interaction takes place. This explicitly means that a laser pulse, for example, interferes with itself. It allows both the diffractive beam shaping and the refractive overlay different proportions of the lateral beam profile with itself the generation of a multi-beam interference (claim 9). In this case, the interference plane can be imaged with the aid of an imaging optical system in an image plane (claim 10).
Preferably, according to claim 11 between the interference plane and said imaging optics further processing optics for adjusting the phase delay of partial beams from the pulsed electromagnetic radiation and corresponding to the interference of the partial beams in the image plane may be arranged. For example, laterally movable wedge plates or tiltable plane parallel plates can be used as processing optics (claim 12) in order to adjust the phase delay between the individual partial beams and thus to influence the resulting interference in the image plane.
In the 10 ps to 50 ps period, the AOD crystal acoustic wave has moved about 50 nm to 250 nm. Considering that typical lattice spacings in an AOD are in the range of several 10 μm (sound wave frequencies ~ 100 MHz), it follows that an ultra-short laser pulse when passing through an AOD crystal experiences approximately the effect of a standing lattice.
At typical laser repetition rates of about 1 MHz, the pulse-to-pulse pause t PP = 1 μs. During this period, the acoustic grating moves by about 5 mm. This size is in the range of typical aperture diameter of AODs. That is, during a pulse-to-pulse pause, the acoustic wave passes through the complete aperture of an AOD approximately once, assuming the correct aperture diameter.

When coupling two frequencies f 1 and f 2 with a low frequency difference results in a beat with the average frequency (f 1 + f 2 ) / 2 and the amplitude modulating envelope (f 1 - f 2 ) / 2. This beating proceeds with the speed of sound of the crystal material. The location of the envelope modulating the diffraction efficiency becomes indeterminate without timing synchronization at the time of a laser pulse crossing, which can lead to undesirable fluctuations in the intensity profile and large variations in the deflected power. A numerical example is the superposition of sound wave frequencies of 100 MHz and 101 MHz, in which the distance between two interference maxima is about 5 mm. This corresponds to typical aperture diameters of AODs. The diffraction efficiency would therefore be modulated at a frequency of about 1 MHz. The aforementioned problems are prevented by the timing of the laser pulse and the beginning of the control waveform, a nearly arbitrary, diffractive beam shape is achieved.

After a waiting time of Δt tx or Δt ty , a corresponding signal form SFx1 or SFy1 is set in the signal source. The waiting times .DELTA.t tx and ty .DELTA.t are chosen so that, after the so-called filling time .DELTA.t Fx or Fy .DELTA.t is present according to the desired beam shaping new state at the time of the next laser pulse in each AOD. The fill times correspond to the time interval in which the new waveform completely fills the AOD crystal according to the speed of sound. Overall, each laser pulse triggers the beam shaping for the next laser pulse.
