Definitions
- the invention relates to an ultrasonic transducer with an adaptation layer for one adjacent to the ultrasonic transducer Propagation medium for ultrasonic waves and an ultrasonic transducer element with a first between the adaptation layer and the ultrasonic transducer element and a second on the opposite of the matching layer Mounted side of the ultrasonic transducer element Electrode.
- HIFU sources High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound
- HIFU sources High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound
- the type of treatment is known as local hyperthermia. Temperatures are beyond of 45 ° C, the cell protein coagulates with the Consequence of tissue necrotization. The latter type of treatment is called thermotherapy.
- the therapeutic ultrasound waves are used by the ultrasound source Continuous sound or emitted as a result of ultrasonic bursts.
- Such ultrasound sources are usually included combined with a suitable diagnostic, imaging system, causing a doctor who has pathological tissue changes treated in a patient's body, the possibility given the area of treatment in the patient's body localize exactly and use the therapy process to observe focused ultrasound waves in real time or to control and control accordingly.
- Ultrasonic applicators therefore often have in addition to one Ultrasonic transducers or an array of ultrasonic transducers for therapy also via an ultrasound transducer or an array of ultrasonic transducers for diagnostics, which, however, in usually components of the ultrasound applicator that are spatially separated from one another are and also operated separately from each other will.
- Sonographic methods currently used for diagnostics, ie imaging, of the treatment area include e.g. B. the sector scan with an ultrasound transducer rotating relative to the therapeutic ultrasound transducer (cf. High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Experimentation on Human Benigh Prostatic Hypertrophy , European Urology, Vol. 23, Suppl. 1, 1993, ISSN 0302-2838, v. A. Gelet, JY Chapelon, J. Margonari, Y. Theillère, F. Gorry, R. Souchon) or the linear scan, in which the diagnostic converter is moved over the treatment area, the scan being understood to mean, for example, linear or sector-shaped scanning using ultrasound beams becomes.
- the ultrasound applicators described above which are two separate ultrasound systems for therapy and have diagnostics, but is also associated with risks. On the one hand, so-called rejections occur.
- H. the Treatment zone on which the therapeutic ultrasound waves act is often not exactly located in the diagnostics, because of the different angles of incidence therapeutic and diagnostic ultrasound waves in that Body tissue the ultrasonic waves different ways in body tissue go through and a different refraction of the Ultrasound waves in various ways through the body tissue occurs.
- the complex alignment of the two ultrasound sources to each other and the required mechanical scanning device make it more difficult and more expensive for the diagnostic converter also the manufacture of such ultrasonic applicators.
- New development trends are therefore aimed at development from ultrasonic applicators, both for reception as well as for the generation of ultrasonic waves in different Frequency ranges are suitable and thus in used in medicine for diagnostics and therapy can be.
- Each ultrasound transducer 1 1 to 1 5 of the ultrasound array has an ultrasound transducer element 2 1 to 2 5 formed from a piezoceramic and a ⁇ / 4 adaptation layer 3 1 to 3 5 formed, for example, from an epoxy resin mixed with copper particles, to an ultrasound transducer 1 1 to 1 5 adjacent acoustic propagation medium 4, in the present case water.
- the ultrasound transducer elements 2 1 to 2 5 are each provided with two electrodes, namely an electrode 5 1 to 5 5 located between the ultrasound transducer element and the adaptation layer, which is connected to ground, and an electrode 6 1 to 6 arranged on the side opposite the adaptation layer 5 , to which a voltage U directed to ground is applied for control purposes.
- the ultrasound array of the ultrasound transducers 1 1 to 1 5 is also protected by a film 7 present between the propagation medium 4 and the ultrasound transducers 1 1 to 1 5 against the penetration of the propagation medium into the spaces between the ultrasound transducers 1 1 to 1 5 .
- a linear phased array of ultrasound transducers of a therapy device to locate and treat one in the body of a Living zone is, for example, from the DE 43 02 538 C1 known.
- the electroacoustic transducer is can be used either in therapy or in location operation.
- ultrasound transducers or arrays of ultrasound transducers for diagnostic and therapy operations must have different acoustic properties.
- a high resonance quality and a high degree of efficiency of the ultrasound transducer or the array elements of the ultrasound transducer are required, while a high bandwidth of the ultrasound transducer or the array elements of the ultrasound transducer is necessary for diagnostics, ie in imaging.
- Another technical problem is the generation of different ultrasound frequencies with a single ultrasound applicator for therapy and diagnostics operation, the ultrasound frequencies currently used for therapy operation being largely in the frequency band between 0.25 and 4 MHz (cf. Intense Focused Ultrasound in Medicine , European Urology, Vol. 23, Suppl. 1, 1993, ISSN 0302-2838, v. F. Fry), while frequencies above 5 MHz are used for sonography.
- ultrasonic transducer elements which, for example in a two-layer design made of piezoelectric material, have two pronounced thickness resonances and, by means of targeted electrical excitation, vibrate in one of their two desired oscillation modes, essentially at the frequency of one of the two thickness resonances (cf. A Dual Frequency Ultrasonic Probe for Medical Applications , IEEE Trans. On Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control, Vol. 42, No. 2, 1995, v. S. Saitoh, M. Izumi, Y.
- the invention is therefore based on the object of an ultrasonic transducer to train in such a way that he can choose either for ultrasound therapy or diagnostics can be used and each acoustically to a propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducer is adjusted.
- an ultrasonic transducer for the diagnostic and therapeutic Use which is either in the diagnostics or therapy operation Ultrasonic waves of different wavelengths generated, the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves in diagnostic operation less than the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves is in therapy mode, having an n x ⁇ / 4 adaptation layer for one adjacent to the ultrasonic transducer Propagation medium for ultrasonic waves, where n is an odd Is number, and a piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer element with one between the matching layer and the ultrasonic transducer element located first electrode, one on the side of the ultrasonic transducer element opposite the matching layer attached second electrode and a third electrode, which is the ultrasonic transducer element into one lying on one side of the third electrode area adjacent to the matching layer and one on the other side of the third electrode and a common ground contact for the two areas forms, depending on the subdivision of the ultrasonic transducer element Ultrasonic waves different Frequency can be generated for diagnostics and therapy operations are different electrical control
- the ultrasonic transducer element By subdivision of the ultrasonic transducer element in two areas by means of the third electrode is therefore a separate one from the other independent electrical control of the two areas of the ultrasonic transducer element optionally for one diagnostic and therapeutic use of the ultrasound transducer possible and in such a way that the frequencies of the generated acoustic ultrasonic waves on the one hand the needs of the therapy company and on the other hand the needs of the location operation are adapted, the ultrasonic transducer always acoustic over an n x ⁇ / 4 adaptation layer to the propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducer is adjusted.
- a particularly preferred embodiment of the invention provides that the third electrode divides the area of the ultrasound transducer element, which is adjacent to the adaptation layer and to the other side of the third electrode, in a thickness ratio of 1: 2.
- control signals or control voltages preferably in the form of sine bursts, are then applied to both areas of the ultrasound transducer element, the control voltage applied to the area on one side of the third electrode being essentially the same with essentially the same polarization of the two areas. 1/2 and with essentially opposite polarization of the two regions is substantially equal to +1/2 the control voltage U 1 present at the region lying on the other side of the third electrode. In this way, a homogeneous electric field is generated within the ultrasonic transducer element.
- the ultrasound transducer behaves like a thickness transducer, the thickness of which is essentially equal to half the wavelength of its basic resonance frequency and which oscillates essentially at the frequency of its thickness resonance and ultrasound waves suitable for therapy, i.e. ultrasound waves with frequencies between 0 depending on the thickness of the ultrasound transducer element , 25 and 4 MHz.
- the invention is in the diagnostic mode of the ultrasonic transducer on the other side of the third Area lying on the corresponding area Impedance of the one on the other side of the third electrode Area of the ultrasonic transducer element matched electrical resistance completed, so in this area the ultrasonic transducer element stronger ultrasonic waves be dampened. This will cause mechanical reverberation of the ultrasonic transducer element after switching off the electrical excitation pulse or control signal reduced. This measure also increases the bandwidth of the ultrasonic transducer. Then it just lies on the one side of the third electrode Range a control voltage.
- the adjustment layer now appears as a 3 / 4 ⁇ adaptation layer with respect to the frequency of the thickness resonance the one lying on one side of the third electrode Area, causing the ultrasonic transducer element in turn acoustically to that adjacent to the ultrasonic transducer Propagation medium is adapted.
- the one on one side of the the third electrode area can thus be operated with control voltages, preferably in the form of triple sine bursts Frequency with regard to the control voltages used in the therapy operation operate.
- the region of the ultrasound transducer element lying on one side of the third electrode is subdivided together with the adaptation layer into individual oscillators which can be controlled independently of one another with control signals.
- This is preferably a subdivision into three mutually independent individual oscillators which can be controlled via their first electrode with control voltages U 2 , U 3 and U 4 .
- the subdivision of the adaptation layer and the area lying on one side of the third electrode into a plurality of individual oscillators improves in particular the width-thickness ratio of the area of the ultrasound transducer element lying on the one side of the third electrode, which is unfavorable for diagnostic operation, so that the frequency spacing between Cross vibration and thickness vibration mode is increased and the risk of undesirable excitation of a parasitic cross vibration mode, which can interfere with the ultrasonic field generated by a specifically excited thickness vibration mode, is reduced.
- Another advantage of this subdivision is the significantly smaller distance between the individual transducers (element to element spacing), which reduces the formation of side lobes in the generated ultrasound field at the shorter wavelength of the ultrasound waves in diagnostic mode in the propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducers.
- this embodiment of the ultrasound transducer also results in a homogeneous electric field in the ultrasound transducer element, so that the ultrasound transducer again behaves like a thickness oscillator that vibrates at the frequency of its thickness resonance.
- the area on the other side of the third electrode is again closed with an electrical resistance matched to the corresponding impedance and control voltages U 2 , U 3 and U 4 are only applied to the three individual oscillators.
- Another variant of the invention provides the ultrasonic transducer elements on the opposite of the adjustment layer Side with air, making the for the therapy operation of the ultrasound transducer required high efficiency in terms of a short treatment time for the patient.
- the ultrasonic transducer element from a piezoceramic namely for example made of Vibrit 420, which due to its material parameters for both therapy and diagnostic operations an ultrasonic transducer is well suited.
- the adjustment layer the ultrasonic transducer is made with one Copper particles offset epoxy resin that already formed in the form of a single adjustment layer, a proportionate one good approximation of the acoustic impedance of the piezoceramic to the of the propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducer causes.
- this is mixed with copper particles Epoxy resin a relatively low attenuation for ultrasonic waves on and is coolable, what's inside an ultrasound applicator is of great advantage.
- a variant of the invention provides that the ultrasonic transducer is formed from two elements made of piezoceramic, which are provided with contact surfaces and with their contact surfaces rest against each other to form the third electrode. On in this way, the third electrode of the ultrasonic transducer element easy to implement.
- the Ultrasonic transducer is designed as a sintered body, wherein the third electrode is formed in the course of a sintering process is. Thus, there are no further ones beyond the sintering process Manufacturing steps for the formation of the third electrode required.
- the subdivision of the adaptation layer and one on the one Side of the third electrode lying area of the ultrasonic transducer element takes place according to a variant of the invention by sawing, sawing deep until the third electrode is reached.
- the rest of the sawing is done preferably in equidistant steps, so that all such generated single oscillator of the ultrasonic transducer element in essentially the same width and the same distance from each other exhibit.
- a particularly preferred variant of the invention provides that the ultrasound transducer generates focused ultrasound waves, the ultrasonic transducer also in the form of a Variety of ultrasound arrays containing ultrasound transducers can be trained.
- the ultrasound array can as a linear array, i.e. H. with a linear arrangement of a Variety of ultrasonic transducers, as a phased array, d. H. as an arrangement of a plurality of ultrasonic transducers, which electronically focusable by a delayed control Ultrasonic waves generated, or in combination be operated as a linear phased array.
- a film for example a Hostaphan sealing film a thickness of about 20 microns is present, which prevents penetration to the ultrasound transducer or to the array of ultrasound transducers adjacent propagation medium in the between the ultrasonic transducers and / or the individual transducers the gaps between the ultrasound transducer are prevented, so that there is no unwanted electrical contacting which can get three electrodes through the medium.
- the film is preferably with a bonding adhesive, e.g. B. Araldite, attached to the matching layer.
- each of the five ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 of the ultrasound array A shown has an ⁇ / 4 matching layer 10 1 to 10 5 , which is adjacent to an acoustic propagation medium 9, which is water in the present case, and an adaption layer 10 1 to 10 5 which is made of copper particles Piezoceramic, for example Vibrit 420, formed ultrasonic transducer element 11 1 to 11 5 .
- Each of the five illustrated ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 of the ultrasonic array A is provided with three electrodes each.
- a first electrode 12 1 to 12 5 is located in each case between the adaptation layer 10 1 to 10 5 and the ultrasound transducer element 11 1 to 11 5 .
- a second electrode 13 1 to 13 5 each of the matching layer attached to the 10 1 to 10 5 opposite side of the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 and a third electrode 14 1 to 14 5, the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 divides each to 11 5 in one of the Matching layer 10 1 to 10 5 adjacent upper area 15 1 to 15 5 and a lower area 16 1 to 16 5 , in the present case the division by the third electrodes 14 1 to 14 5 in each case in a thickness ratio of 1: 2.
- the first electrodes 12 11 to 12 53 of the individual oscillators of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 and the second and third electrodes of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 can be contacted electrically independently of one another.
- the adaptation layers and the upper areas of the ultrasound transducer elements of the individual oscillators of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 have been omitted separately in FIG. 2 with reference numerals. Therefore, if in the following, for example, the adaptation layers 10 1 to 10 5 are mentioned, the adaptation layers of all individual oscillators of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 are meant.
- the subdivision of the adaptation layers 10 1 to 10 5 and the upper regions 15 1 to 15 5 of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 is preferably, but not necessarily, by sawing, the width of the individual transducers and the spacing of the individual transducers from one another in each of the ultrasonic transducers 8 1 to 8 5 is substantially constant and the same.
- the width of an individual oscillator is generally approximately 50-100 ⁇ m and the distance between the individual oscillators of each of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 from one another is approximately 25-50 ⁇ m.
- the distance between the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 of the ultrasound array A is approximately 50-100 ⁇ m (cf. also FIG. 4).
- the third electrodes 14 1 to 14 5 of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 of the ultrasound array A also form the common ground contact of the upper 15 1 to 15 5 and lower regions 16 1 to 16 5 of the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 .
- Such a third electrode 14 1 to 14 5 which is located between an upper and a lower region of an ultrasonic transducer element, can be formed before subdivision into individual transducers, for example by combining two ceramic layers provided with contact surfaces, the contact surfaces adjoining each other being the third electrode 14 1 to 14 5 form.
- the ultrasound array A is used in therapy and diagnostics operated as a linear phased array and generates ultrasonic waves, which electronically focuses on one level can be. This mode of operation of the ultrasound array However, A is not absolutely necessary.
- the ultrasound array A In localization mode, the ultrasound array A generates diagnostic acoustic waves in the form of short ultrasonic pulses, the length of which is a few half-periods. In therapy operation generates the ultrasound array A additionally focused therapeutic acoustic ultrasonic waves. With these ultrasonic waves is it continuous sound or pulsed Continuous sound, which briefly emits the diagnostic Ultrasonic waves, which are also preferably focused are interrupted.
- the control signals or control voltages are present at each ultrasound transducer 8 1 to 8 5 or each ultrasound transducer 8 1 to 8 5 is controlled with such control voltages.
- the lower regions of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 are each connected to the control voltage U 1 against the ground via the second electrode 13 1 to 13 5 and each individual oscillator of one of the ultrasonic transducers 8 1 to 8 5 via its first electrode 12 11 to 12 53 a control voltage U 2 , U 3 or U 4 , which is directed towards ground, the electrical contacting of the first electrodes of the individual oscillators or of the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 likewise being shown only by way of example using the ultrasound transducer element 11 1 for reasons of clarity in FIG is.
- each of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 of the ultrasound array A then behaves like a thickness transducer which oscillates essentially at the frequency of its thickness resonance and has a transient response which is comparable to that of the ultrasound transducer 1 1 to 1 5 of the ultrasound array from FIG. 1.
- the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 are each acoustically adapted to the propagation medium for ultrasound waves 9, the thicknesses of the ⁇ / 4 adaptation layers 10 1 to 10 5 for the therapy operation in are generally matched to the operating frequencies of 1 - 3 MHz and are approx. 200 - 600 ⁇ m.
- the piezoceramic otherwise has a total thickness of approx. 400-1200 ⁇ m, with approx. 2/3 of the total thickness on the lower regions 16 1 to 16 5 and approx. 1/3 on the upper 15 1 to 15 5 regions of the piezoceramic or the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 are omitted.
- the ultrasonic transducer 8 1 to 8 5 are closed in the rest of the the matching layers 10 1 to 10 5 opposite sides of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 with air, whereby the space required for the therapy mode high power efficiency of each ultrasonic transducer is achieved 8 1 to 8 5 .
- each lower region 16 1 to 16 5 of each ultrasound transducer element 11 1 to 11 5 is terminated with an electrical resistance which is matched to the corresponding impedance of the lower region 16 1 to 16 5 (cf. FIG. 6).
- an electrical resistance which is matched to the corresponding impedance of the lower region 16 1 to 16 5 (cf. FIG. 6).
- ultrasonic waves in the lower regions 16 1 to 16 5 of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 are more strongly damped, as a result of which the mechanical reverberation after the electrical excitation pulse or control signal is switched off is reduced.
- This also increases the bandwidth of the ultrasound array A for good imaging compared to the original array according to FIG. 1.
- the ultrasound array A only the three individual oscillators of each ultrasound transducer 8 1 to 8 5 located above the third electrode are controlled with control voltages U 2 , U 3 and U 4 . Since the thickness of the upper regions 15 1 to 15 5 of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 is approximately 1/3 of the total thickness of the piezoceramic ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 , which is between 400 and 1200 ⁇ m, the adaptation layer now appears as 3 / 4 ⁇ adaptation layer with respect to the thickness resonance frequency of the ultrasound transducers 8 1 to 8 5 present in the diagnostic mode, so that the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 are in turn acoustically adapted to the propagation medium 9.
- the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 can thus be operated in the diagnostic mode with three times the frequency, that is to say approx. 3-9 MHz, with respect to the sinus bursts in the therapy mode.
- the subdivision of the upper areas 15 1 to 15 5 of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 together with the adaptation layers 10 1 to 10 5 into three mutually independent individual oscillators also makes the otherwise unfavorable width-thickness ratio of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 taken into account in this area in diagnostics. This leads to a greater frequency spacing between the transverse vibration mode and the thickness vibration mode, which reduces the risk of undesired excitation of a transverse vibration mode, which could disrupt an ultrasound field generated specifically by thickness vibrations of the upper regions 15 1 to 15 5 of the ultrasound transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 .
- Another advantage of this subdivision lies in the significantly smaller distance between the antenna elements of the ultrasound array A, especially the individual transducers, the term antenna elements being used in analogy to communications or radio frequency technology and denoting a device which can emit and receive electromagnetic waves.
- the formation of side lobes at the shorter wavelength of the ultrasound waves in the diagnostic mode in the propagation medium 9 is minimized.
- the upper regions 15 1 to 15 5 of the ultrasonic transducer elements 11 1 to 11 5 and the matching layers 10 1 to 10 5 do not necessarily have to be divided into three individual oscillators, but other subdivisions are also possible.
- Ultrasonic transducers or the array of ultrasonic transducers according to the invention with other operating frequencies than those mentioned to operate in therapy and diagnostics.
- the ultrasound array A contains, in practice, a total of, for example, 128 or 256 ultrasound transducers.
- 3 shows a top view of a corresponding ultrasound array A with z ultrasound transducers, the film 17 and the propagation medium 9 not being shown in FIG. 3.
- the ultrasonic transducers 8 1 to 8 z are fastened to a frame 18 in such a way that they are sealed off at the rear with air in order, as already mentioned, to achieve a high level of efficiency in therapy operation.
- 4 shows the section IV-IV from FIG. 3 in a representation of the ultrasound array A comparable to FIG. 2.
- FIG. 5 shows a side view of the ultrasound array A.
- the control of the ultrasonic transducers 8 1 to 8 z is described below with reference to the block diagram in FIG. 6, in which the ultrasonic transducers 8 1 , 8 2 and 8 z are shown as examples. - the switches S1 1 to S4 z are part of a total of 19 control and imaging electronics.

- the center F of the active zone lies in the body of the living being to be treated at the point which corresponds to the point marked by the mark F 'in the ultrasound image.
- the therapeutic ultrasound waves are continuous sound or pulsed continuous sound.
- the therapeutic ultrasound waves are periodically briefly interrupted in the therapy mode, which can also be switched on by pressing the button 33, for example, by the attending physician, in order to update the ultrasound image even during the therapy mode.
- the image generation circuit 24 is switched to the control stage 20 and brings the switches S1 1 to S1 z , S2 1 to S2, S3 1 to S3 z and S4 1 to S4 z into the time required for the generation of an ultrasound image Location corresponding position.

- the ultrasound array according to the invention has proven itself so because of its acoustic properties, in particular the acoustic adaptation to the propagation medium in therapy and diagnostics, as very good for a combined one therapeutic and diagnostic operation for treatment pathological tissue changes in bodies of Suitable for living beings.
Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an ultrasonic transducer with an adaptation layer for one adjacent to the ultrasonic transducer Propagation medium for ultrasonic waves and an ultrasonic transducer element with a first between the adaptation layer and the ultrasonic transducer element and a second on the opposite of the matching layer Mounted side of the ultrasonic transducer element Electrode.
Applications of ultrasound in medicine, for example for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasias mostly take place based on focused ultrasonic waves, which so-called HIFU sources (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) generate with a pathological tissue to be treated apply focused ultrasonic waves and thus heat. If the temperatures occur below 45 ° C lie, the cell metabolism is disturbed with the result that in the case of tumors, a slowdown in growth or there is even a decrease in the tumor. The type of treatment is known as local hyperthermia. Temperatures are beyond of 45 ° C, the cell protein coagulates with the Consequence of tissue necrotization. The latter type of treatment is called thermotherapy. The therapeutic ultrasound waves are used by the ultrasound source Continuous sound or emitted as a result of ultrasonic bursts. Such ultrasound sources are usually included combined with a suitable diagnostic, imaging system, causing a doctor who has pathological tissue changes treated in a patient's body, the possibility given the area of treatment in the patient's body localize exactly and use the therapy process to observe focused ultrasound waves in real time or to control and control accordingly. Ultrasonic applicators therefore often have in addition to one Ultrasonic transducers or an array of ultrasonic transducers for therapy also via an ultrasound transducer or an array of ultrasonic transducers for diagnostics, which, however, in usually components of the ultrasound applicator that are spatially separated from one another are and also operated separately from each other will.
High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Experimentation on Human Benigh Prostatic Hypertrophy, European Urology, Vol. 23, Suppl. 1, 1993, ISSN 0302-2838, v. A. Gelet, J.Y. Sonographic methods currently used for diagnostics, ie imaging, of the treatment area include e.g. B. the sector scan with an ultrasound transducer rotating relative to the therapeutic ultrasound transducer (cf.
The use of the ultrasound applicators described above, which are two separate ultrasound systems for therapy and have diagnostics, but is also associated with risks. On the one hand, so-called rejections occur. H. the Treatment zone on which the therapeutic ultrasound waves act, is often not exactly located in the diagnostics, because of the different angles of incidence therapeutic and diagnostic ultrasound waves in that Body tissue the ultrasonic waves different ways in body tissue go through and a different refraction of the Ultrasound waves in various ways through the body tissue occurs. Second, there is a risk of being inaccurate Alignment or misalignment of the two Ultrasound sources relative to each other. In all of these Cases can be focused ultrasound waves in therapy miss the therapy goal and healthy body tissue damage. The complex alignment of the two ultrasound sources to each other and the required mechanical scanning device make it more difficult and more expensive for the diagnostic converter also the manufacture of such ultrasonic applicators.
New development trends are therefore aimed at development from ultrasonic applicators, both for reception as well as for the generation of ultrasonic waves in different Frequency ranges are suitable and thus in used in medicine for diagnostics and therapy can be. Nowadays you also use ultrasound technology increasingly on the use of linear phased arrays of ultrasonic transducers, such as B. in treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia, in which by a temporally offset electrical excitation of the linearly arranged Array elements of a swiveled ultrasonic transducer Wavefront can be generated so that an electronic Focusing of the generated ultrasound waves in one plane is possible.
in FIG 1 gezeigt.
Such a linear phased array of the type mentioned, of which five ultrasound transducers are shown, is shown in FIG. 1, for example. Each ultrasound transducer 1 1 to 1 5 of the ultrasound array has an
A linear phased array of ultrasound transducers of a therapy device to locate and treat one in the body of a Living zone is, for example, from the DE 43 02 538 C1 known. The electroacoustic transducer is can be used either in therapy or in location operation.
The problem of each is still unsolved in the prior art optimal acoustic adaptation of the ultrasonic transducer element of the ultrasonic transducer to that of the ultrasonic transducer adjacent propagation medium for ultrasonic waves for those in therapy as well as in diagnostics frequency ranges used. It is the same with the problem of the highest possible resonance quality of the ultrasonic transducers in the case of therapy and the largest possible Attenuation of ultrasound waves in diagnostics.
The invention is therefore based on the object of an ultrasonic transducer to train in such a way that he can choose either for ultrasound therapy or diagnostics can be used and each acoustically to a propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducer is adjusted.
According to the invention, this object is achieved by an ultrasonic transducer for the diagnostic and therapeutic Use, which is either in the diagnostics or therapy operation Ultrasonic waves of different wavelengths generated, the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves in diagnostic operation less than the wavelength of the ultrasonic waves is in therapy mode, having an n x λ / 4 adaptation layer for one adjacent to the ultrasonic transducer Propagation medium for ultrasonic waves, where n is an odd Is number, and a piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer element with one between the matching layer and the ultrasonic transducer element located first electrode, one on the side of the ultrasonic transducer element opposite the matching layer attached second electrode and a third electrode, which is the ultrasonic transducer element into one lying on one side of the third electrode area adjacent to the matching layer and one on the other side of the third electrode and a common ground contact for the two areas forms, depending on the subdivision of the ultrasonic transducer element Ultrasonic waves different Frequency can be generated for diagnostics and therapy operations are different electrical control signals when they are generated in the two areas in the diagnostic and therapy mode and where the n x λ / 4 matching layer is effective for both the wavelength of the ultrasound waves in the diagnostic and in the therapy mode. By subdivision of the ultrasonic transducer element in two areas by means of the third electrode is therefore a separate one from the other independent electrical control of the two areas of the ultrasonic transducer element optionally for one diagnostic and therapeutic use of the ultrasound transducer possible and in such a way that the frequencies of the generated acoustic ultrasonic waves on the one hand the needs of the therapy company and on the other hand the needs of the location operation are adapted, the ultrasonic transducer always acoustic over an n x λ / 4 adaptation layer to the propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducer is adjusted. This is a significant advantage compared to the prior art, since the acoustic Adaptation of the ultrasonic transducer to that of the ultrasonic transducer adjacent propagation medium, which one of the wave resistance of the ultrasonic transducer different Has wave resistance for the most reflection-free Exceeds the sound energy from the ultrasonic transducer on the propagation medium in the interest of a time-saving Treatment of a patient and the lowest possible, the Dose of acoustic energy supplied to patients, especially in the Therapy operation is crucial.
A particularly preferred embodiment of the invention provides that the third electrode divides the area of the ultrasound transducer element, which is adjacent to the adaptation layer and to the other side of the third electrode, in a thickness ratio of 1: 2. In therapy operation of the ultrasound transducer, control signals or control voltages, preferably in the form of sine bursts, are then applied to both areas of the ultrasound transducer element, the control voltage applied to the area on one side of the third electrode being essentially the same with essentially the same polarization of the two areas. 1/2 and with essentially opposite polarization of the two regions is substantially equal to +1/2 the control voltage U 1 present at the region lying on the other side of the third electrode. In this way, a homogeneous electric field is generated within the ultrasonic transducer element. In this case, the ultrasound transducer behaves like a thickness transducer, the thickness of which is essentially equal to half the wavelength of its basic resonance frequency and which oscillates essentially at the frequency of its thickness resonance and ultrasound waves suitable for therapy, i.e. ultrasound waves with frequencies between 0 depending on the thickness of the ultrasound transducer element , 25 and 4 MHz.
According to a variant of the invention is in the diagnostic mode of the ultrasonic transducer on the other side of the third Area lying on the corresponding area Impedance of the one on the other side of the third electrode Area of the ultrasonic transducer element matched electrical resistance completed, so in this area the ultrasonic transducer element stronger ultrasonic waves be dampened. This will cause mechanical reverberation of the ultrasonic transducer element after switching off the electrical excitation pulse or control signal reduced. This measure also increases the bandwidth of the ultrasonic transducer. Then it just lies on the one side of the third electrode Range a control voltage. Because the thickness of the diagnostics driven by appropriate control voltages, lying on one side of the third electrode Area, which the ultrasonic transducer element in the ratio 1: 2 divides, one third of the total thickness of the ultrasonic transducer element the adjustment layer now appears as a 3 / 4λ adaptation layer with respect to the frequency of the thickness resonance the one lying on one side of the third electrode Area, causing the ultrasonic transducer element in turn acoustically to that adjacent to the ultrasonic transducer Propagation medium is adapted. The one on one side of the the third electrode area can thus be operated with control voltages, preferably in the form of triple sine bursts Frequency with regard to the control voltages used in the therapy operation operate.
According to a further particularly preferred embodiment of the invention, the region of the ultrasound transducer element lying on one side of the third electrode is subdivided together with the adaptation layer into individual oscillators which can be controlled independently of one another with control signals. This is preferably a subdivision into three mutually independent individual oscillators which can be controlled via their first electrode with control voltages U 2 , U 3 and U 4 . The subdivision of the adaptation layer and the area lying on one side of the third electrode into a plurality of individual oscillators improves in particular the width-thickness ratio of the area of the ultrasound transducer element lying on the one side of the third electrode, which is unfavorable for diagnostic operation, so that the frequency spacing between Cross vibration and thickness vibration mode is increased and the risk of undesirable excitation of a parasitic cross vibration mode, which can interfere with the ultrasonic field generated by a specifically excited thickness vibration mode, is reduced. Another advantage of this subdivision is the significantly smaller distance between the individual transducers (element to element spacing), which reduces the formation of side lobes in the generated ultrasound field at the shorter wavelength of the ultrasound waves in diagnostic mode in the propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducers.

Another variant of the invention provides the ultrasonic transducer elements on the opposite of the adjustment layer Side with air, making the for the therapy operation of the ultrasound transducer required high efficiency in terms of a short treatment time for the patient.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the ultrasonic transducer element from a piezoceramic, namely for example made of Vibrit 420, which due to its material parameters for both therapy and diagnostic operations an ultrasonic transducer is well suited. The adjustment layer the ultrasonic transducer is made with one Copper particles offset epoxy resin that already formed in the form of a single adjustment layer, a proportionate one good approximation of the acoustic impedance of the piezoceramic to the of the propagation medium adjacent to the ultrasound transducer causes. In addition, this is mixed with copper particles Epoxy resin a relatively low attenuation for ultrasonic waves on and is coolable, what's inside an ultrasound applicator is of great advantage.
A variant of the invention provides that the ultrasonic transducer is formed from two elements made of piezoceramic, which are provided with contact surfaces and with their contact surfaces rest against each other to form the third electrode. On in this way, the third electrode of the ultrasonic transducer element easy to implement.
Another embodiment of the invention provides that the Ultrasonic transducer is designed as a sintered body, wherein the third electrode is formed in the course of a sintering process is. Thus, there are no further ones beyond the sintering process Manufacturing steps for the formation of the third electrode required.
The subdivision of the adaptation layer and one on the one Side of the third electrode lying area of the ultrasonic transducer element takes place according to a variant of the invention by sawing, sawing deep until the third electrode is reached. The rest of the sawing is done preferably in equidistant steps, so that all such generated single oscillator of the ultrasonic transducer element in essentially the same width and the same distance from each other exhibit.
A particularly preferred variant of the invention provides that the ultrasound transducer generates focused ultrasound waves, the ultrasonic transducer also in the form of a Variety of ultrasound arrays containing ultrasound transducers can be trained. The ultrasound array can as a linear array, i.e. H. with a linear arrangement of a Variety of ultrasonic transducers, as a phased array, d. H. as an arrangement of a plurality of ultrasonic transducers, which electronically focusable by a delayed control Ultrasonic waves generated, or in combination be operated as a linear phased array. In this case it is easily possible in a manner known per se, on the one hand in therapeutic operation the effective zone of the therapeutic acoustic Waves according to the respective needs relocate electronically, and on the other hand in the location operation a living being to be treated with the diagnostic to sample acoustic waves in the manner like this required to create a B-mode ultrasound image is.
Another embodiment of the invention provides that between the adaptation layer and the propagation medium a film, for example a Hostaphan sealing film a thickness of about 20 microns is present, which prevents penetration to the ultrasound transducer or to the array of ultrasound transducers adjacent propagation medium in the between the ultrasonic transducers and / or the individual transducers the gaps between the ultrasound transducer are prevented, so that there is no unwanted electrical contacting which can get three electrodes through the medium. The film is preferably with a bonding adhesive, e.g. B. Araldite, attached to the matching layer.

FIG 2 zeigt von einem erfindungsgemäße Ultraschallwandler
enthaltenden Ultraschallarray A fünf Ultraschallwandlern 81
105 zusätzlich in jeweils drei Einzelschwinger unterteilt, so
µm. Der Abstand der Ultraschallwandler 81 bis 85 des Ultraschallarrays
A beträgt ca. 50 - 100 µm (vgl. hierzu auch FIG

The
akustische Ausbreitungsmedium kommen kann.A
The ultrasound array A is used in therapy and diagnostics operated as a linear phased array and generates ultrasonic waves, which electronically focuses on one level can be. This mode of operation of the ultrasound array However, A is not absolutely necessary.
In localization mode, the ultrasound array A generates diagnostic acoustic waves in the form of short ultrasonic pulses, the length of which is a few half-periods. In therapy operation generates the ultrasound array A additionally focused therapeutic acoustic ultrasonic waves. With these ultrasonic waves is it continuous sound or pulsed Continuous sound, which briefly emits the diagnostic Ultrasonic waves, which are also preferably focused are interrupted.
abgeschlossen (vgl. FIG 6).
In the diagnostic operation of the ultrasound array A, each lower region 16 1 to 16 5 of each
The subdivision of the
Furthermore, it is of course possible to use the invention Ultrasonic transducers or the array of ultrasonic transducers according to the invention with other operating frequencies than those mentioned to operate in therapy and diagnostics. In in this case the thicknesses of the ultrasonic transducer elements, their subdivision and the thicknesses of the n x λ / 4 matching layers to match the corresponding operating frequencies.
Das Ultraschallarray A enthält übrigens in der Praxis insgesamt
beispielsweise 128 oder 256 Ultraschallwandler. FIG 3
FIG 4 zeigt

Immediately afterwards, the
Monitor 28 dargestellte Ultraschallbild eingeblendete Marke
entsprechende Stellung. Danach kehren die Schalter bis zur
Anfertigung des darauffolgenden Ultraschallbildes in ihre dem
Therapiebetrieb entsprechende Schaltstellung zurück. Während
die Ultraschallbilder im Ortungsbetrieb mit einer Folgefrequenz
von z. B. 25 Hz erzeugt werden, liegt die Folgefrequenz
im Therapiebetrieb beispielsweise bei 0,2 bis 1 Hz.The therapeutic ultrasound waves are continuous sound or pulsed continuous sound. The therapeutic ultrasound waves are periodically briefly interrupted in the therapy mode, which can also be switched on by pressing the
In therapy mode, the
It is of decisive importance in general that, as already mentioned and explained, the
The control circuit in FIG. 6 as such is otherwise only to be regarded as exemplary. It goes without saying also other control circuits which are essentially the same Functional range conceivable.
FIG 7 stellt zwei durch Finite-Element-Simulation ermittelte
also aufgrund seiner akustischen Eigenschaften, insbesondere
Lebewesen geeignet.7 shows two ones determined by finite element simulation
