Description

Description
METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING ORDERED RESEARCH INFORMATION
Technical Field
[1] The present invention relates to a method and a system for providing customized research information and, more particularly, to a method and a system for providing information on a specific domain, which is suitable for a user, based on the current level of knowledge and a goal level of the user with respect to the specific field. Background Art
[2] As the quantity of publication of literature on science and technology constantly increases and information acquirable through the Internet becomes excessive, this excessive information hinders people who have to grasp research trends through the information, secure business competitiveness through the grasped research trends, set a research and development course with the general tendency and prepare for the future challenge from forming correct conclusion.
[3] Conventional information analysis methods in which an information user acquires information from every information source based on his/her knowledge and experience have problems that experts should consume excessive time and prejudiced information is collected and analyzed according to the standpoint of an expert.
[4] To solve these problems, an information analysis system that executes parts of works performed by a person using a computer is being studied.
[5] Furthermore, many researchers who start new researches in specific research domains have difficulty in finding research starting points. If a researcher is lucky, he/ she can have a senior or a professor who helps him/her to find a research starting point. However, most researchers should resolve difficulty in finding research starting points by themselves.
[6] Representative starting points for researches in new domains can include papers and explanations written by experts of specific domains, fundamental personal information on experts who obtain unique search results or play active parts in specific domains, and information on texts of expert domains.
[7] Collection of information, which corresponds to a preparatory work for performing research, is considered as a work that is very difficult and requires a long time even at the present having the Internet.
[8] However, the aforementioned information approximates to axiom for experts who have various experiences in specific domains. Accordingly, it is a waste of time for experts to deal with this fundamental information deeply. [9] However, lots of efforts to allow novice researchers to easily acquire the aforementioned information according to representation of knowledge and construction of knowledge base have been made in the artificial intelligence domain.
[10] Furthermore, a domain-specific expert system using a knowledge base constructed according to an elaborately defined knowledge representation technique has been developed.
[11] The main purpose of the expert system is to convert expert knowledge of a specific domain such that decision makers or technical experts who want rapid solutions to the expert knowledge can easily use the expert knowledge. However, the knowledge converted in this manner is insufficient all the time and it is not always possible to convert appropriate expert knowledge.
[12] If there is a mobile computer having profound knowledge of a specific domain, this mobile computer can be considered as a system having knowledge of an expert domain, which covers all the knowledge of the expert domain over centuries. This system will be very useful for managers who perform situation assessment or long- range planning.
[13] Another opinion on the definition of the expert system is to consider the expert system as a single enormous computer program from a view point of computer science. In other words, the expert system or a knowledge-based system is defined as a single computer program including subject-specific knowledge of a plurality of experts.
[14] Programs of this kind were developed in 1960s and 1970s first and commercially used in 1980s. A most general expert system has the following characteristics.
[15] Firstly, the expert system includes a set of rules required to analyze detailed information on a problem that a user wants to solve.
[16] Secondly, the expert system performs problem analysis through various mathematical methodologies based on analyzed information.
[17] Finally, the expert system provides a user actions scenario required to solve a problem or correct an error in the expert system on the basis of analysis results.
[18] Accordingly, a user can definitely set a goal through exchange of information with the expert system and help the expert system to correct a wrong result. The expert system uses a reasoning function in this information exchange process.
[19] As described above, to create a single expert system and practically use the expert system, it is required to definitely define a target domain and sufficiently represent the domain.
[20] However, when the target domain is excessively wide, a knowledge representation step performed by handwork is difficult to carry out to result in lack of representative power, and thus users cannot be satisfied with the expert system and sufficiently use the expert system. [21] Furthermore, a conventional expert system cannot provide a method for allowing novice researchers who start new researches in specific research domains to find starting points of the researches. [59] Detailed topics of each research domain are mapped in the knowledge base 220. That is, topics of each domain are mapped in the knowledge base 220 according to the degree of difficulty. Here, the degree of difficulty of each domain can be determined by knowledge experts.
[60] The knowledge base 220 includes essential information required for a novice researcher to start research in a specific domain.
[61] The knowledge base 220 is constructed based on RDF.
[62] The topic searching unit 230 receives domain selection information from the client through the communication unit 220 and searches the knowledge base 220 to extract information on topics of the domain of interest.
[63] For example, when the domain of interest is 'semantic web', the topic searching unit
230 searches the knowledge base 220 to extract eight topics of URI, Uncode, XML, XML schema, RDF, RDF schema, OWL, and semantic web based application which are mapped to the domain of interest.
[64] Then, the topic searching unit 230 generates a user profile information input image including the extracted topics and transmits the user profile information input image to the client.
[65] The user profile information input image includes a region to which the current level of knowledge and a goal of the user about each topic are input. Accordingly, the client receives user profile information including the current level of knowledge and the goal of the user about each topic through the user profile information input image and transmits the user profile information to the research supporting portal server.
[66] The research order information generator 240 presents research information most suitable for the user, found from the knowledge base 220, based on the user profile information and provides topic-centered research order information to the client when the user profile information is received from the client.
[67] That is, the research order information generator 240 performs filtering based on the current level of knowledge and the goal of the user about each topic, which are included in the user profile information, to generate research order information on the domain of interest and provides the research order information to the client.
[68] A method of generating the research order information on the domain of interest according to the research order information generator 240 will now be explained with reference to FIGS. 3A, 3B, 3C and 3D.
[69] FIG. 3A illustrates a result obtained by analyzing the user profile information transmitted from the client according to the research order information generator 240. The analysis result includes information on detailed categories 310a of a domain of interest and the user profile information 320a.
[70] The categories 310a include five categories Category_01, Category_02,
Category_03, Category_04 and Category_05, which exist in the knowledge base. The categories are arranged in the knowledge base according to the degree of difficulty.
[71] The user profile information 320a represents the current level 322a of a user as one of low', 'middle' and 'high' for each category and indicates a goal 324a of the user. Specifically, the current level 322a of the user is low for 'Category_01', high for 'Category_02', low for 'Category_03', low for 'Category_04' and middle for 'Category_05' and the goal 324a of the user is middle.
[72] Referring to FIG. 3B, the research order information generator 240 recognizes that the current level of the user is high and the goal of the user is middle for 'Category_02' using the user profile information 320b. Accordingly, the research order information generator 240 determines that all the resources included in Category_02' are unnecessary for the user because there is no resources in the existing knowledge base based on the level of knowledge of the user, and thus the research order information generator 240 deletes 'Category_02'.
[73] Referring to FIG. 3C, the current level of the user is low and the goal of the user is middle for 'Category_01', 'Category_03' and 'Category_04', and thus resources corresponding to a 'difficult' level are not necessary for the user. Accordingly, the resources corresponding to the 'difficult' level are deleted from 'Category_01', 'Category_03' and 'Category_04'.
[74] Referring to FIG. 3D, the current level of the user is low and the goal 324d is middle for 'Category_05', and thus resources corresponding to a 'low' level are not necessary for the user. Accordingly, the resources corresponding to the 'low' level are deleted from 'Category_05'. [75] Accordingly, research information extracted by the research order information generator 240 based on the user profile information is as illustrated in FIG. 3D.
[76] That is, the resources corresponding to the 'difficult' level are deleted from
'Category_θr, 'Category_03' and 'Category_04', 'Category_02' is deleted, and the resources corresponding to the 'low' level are removed from 'Category_05'.
[77] The research order information generator 240 sets the order of the extracted research information on the categories according to the degree of difficulty and provides the research information to the client.
[78] FIG. 4 is a flow chart of a customized research information providing method according to the present invention and FIGS. 5 A, 5B, 5C and 5D illustrate images for explaining the customized research information providing method according to the present invention.
[79] Referring to FIG. 4, when a client accesses a research supporting portal server and selects a domain of interest in step S300, a research supporting portal server searches a knowledge base to extract detailed topics of the selected domain of interest in step S302.
[80] That is, when the client connects to the research supporting portal server, a domain selection image 500 is displayed, as illustrated in FIG. 5A.
[81] The client selects the domain of interest through the domain selection image 500.
Then, the client transmits information on the selected domain of interest to the research supporting portal server.
[82] The research supporting portal server searches the knowledge base to extract information on the topics of the domain of interest.
[83] Subsequently, the research supporting portal server generates a user profile information input image 510 illustrated in FIG. 5B, which includes the extracted information on the topics of the domain of interest and provides the user profile information input image 510 to the client in step S304.
[84] Referring to FIG. 5B, the user profile information input image 510 includes a domain display region 512 for displaying a domain of interest selected by a user, a detailed topic display region 514 and a goal selection region 516.
[85] The domain display region 512 displays the field of interest, selected by the user, in step S300 and the detailed topic display region 514 includes a list 513 of topics of the domain of interest and a selection button 515 for selecting the current level of knowledge of the user about each of the topics.
[86] The current level of knowledge of the user is represented as 'high', 'middle' or 'low' about each of the topics. Here, the level 'low' represents that the user has no expert knowledge on a specific domain or does not perform any research on any resources in the existing knowledge base. The level 'middle represents that the user has fun- damental knowledge on a specific domain and knowledge on resources corresponding to a 'easy' level as the degree D of difficulty of resources of the existing knowledge base. The level 'high' represents that the user has middle-level knowledge on a specific domain and knowledge corresponding to 'easy' and 'medium' levels as the degree D of difficulty of resources of the existing knowledge base.
[87] The user inputs the current level about each topic using the selection button 515 displayed in the topic display region 514.
[88] The goal selection region 516 includes a selection button for selecting one of 'Skin- deep knowledge', 'Basic knowledge' and 'Advanced knowledge'.
[89] The 'Skin-deep knowledge' corresponds to a goal selected by a user who wants to know only the basic concept or principle of a domain of interest and 'Basic knowledge' corresponds to a goal selected for a user who wants to adopt the current domain as his/ her major field of study or main study field to find starting points or methods for researches. The 'Advanced knowledge' is a goal selected for a user who has a specific expert level in the current domain to perform deeper researches.
[90] The user selects a desired goal through the goal selection region 516.
[91] When the user profile information including the current level of knowledge and the goal of the user about each topic is input through the user profile information input image 510, the client transmits the user profile information to the research supporting portal server in step S306.
[92] The research supporting portal server performs filtering based on the current level and the goal of the user, included in the user profile information transmitted from the client, to generate research order information on the domain of interest in step S308 and transmits the research order information to the client in step S310.
[93] That is, the research supporting portal server compares the current level of knowledge to the goal about each topic, included in the user profile information, extracts research information on each topic, generates the research order information using the extracted research information and provides the research order information to the client.
[94] Then, a research order information providing image 520 illustrated in FIG. 5C is displayed on the client.
[95] Referring to FIG. 5C, the research order information providing image 520 includes a region 524 providing research order information on each topic and a detailed information providing region 526 providing research information belonging to a specific topic.
[96] If the current levels of knowledge of the user about all the topics are input as low' through the user profile information input image 510 illustrated in FIG. 5B, for example, the research order information providing region 524 displays all the topics of the semantic web domain, as illustrated in FIG. 5C.
[97] The detailed information providing region 526 emphasizes only resources having low difficulty in a resource type 'Web Document' and displays the resources because the goal of the user is set to the lowest level.
[98] Consequently, the research supporting portal server judges that the user needs only a web document 'Uniform Resource Identifier' and provides only web documents with respect to URL.
[99] When the client wants detailed information on the corresponding resources with reference to the research order information transmitted from the research supporting portal server and selects the resources, a detailed resource information output image 530 is displayed, as illustrated in FIG. 5D.
[100] Referring to FIG. 5D, the detailed resource information output image 530 displays a pop-up window 532 that displays detailed information on specific resources.
[101] The detailed resource information output image 530 displays all the information designated by RDF bases schema and may be linked according to data characteristic of each field. Since the resource type corresponds to the web document, the user can directly move to a corresponding URL through the pop-up window 532.
[102] As described above, the research supporting portal server provides information on sub-domains (that is, detailed domains) constructing a specific field to the client such that the client can make structural access to the current knowledge base and helps the user to make procedural access to topics in the relation of cause and effect.
[103] For example, a semantic web field knowledge base includes eight topics of URI,
Uncode, XML, XML schema, RDF, RDF schema, OWL and semantic web based application. In other words, a sub technical field 'Semantic web based application' is designated as a goal of semantic web research and a technical field 'URI' is designated as the starting point of the semantic web research.
[104] The user can understand sub techniques constructing the semantic web in the knowledge base and vertically search resources classified by the sub techniques according to experts. Simultaneously, the user can sequentially understand basic techniques required for performing research of specific sub technology.
[105] While this invention has been particularly shown and described with reference to preferred embodiments thereof, it will be understood by those skilled in the art that various changes in form and details may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. The preferred embodiments should be considered in descriptive sense only and not for purpose of limitation. Therefore, the scope of the invention is defined not by the detailed description of the invention but by the appended claims, and all differences within the scope will be construed as being included in the present invention.
