The object ol the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and durable skirt, pettieoat or the like, which can be easily put on and taken (iii, the aist band 01 which adjustable so that the skirt can be worn by persons having ditterent waist. measiirements, amt which provides pockets for carrying 'aluables and the like.

The invention consists in the construction and eombinatimi oi parts to be more tully described hereinafterand nlrtimilarly setytorth in the claims.

lietore proceeding to a more detailed description of my invention, it should he understood that the same is applicable to dil 'lerent forms of garments. such. for exanr ple. as skirts, pettiroats or the like. It so desired; it can even be used in connection with certain l'orms of trousers or iii; iiiureated garments. All of the 't'eatiu'rs set forth above neednot be included in a sin gle garment, and certain of the features can be eliminated without departing from the underlying spirit; of the invention. For example. the pockets can be dispensed with, or the bark t'ent can be eliminated. These and certain of the other details can be varied in accordance with individual p reference and special conditions.

.ltet'erring more particularly to the drawings, I have shown for example a skirt it), having a waist band 11, which is split at the sides to l'oi'm plarkets t2, the edges of which are sewed or otherwise finished in any preferred or common manner. At the rear the skirt has a back t'ent 13, the edges oi which are likewise suitably finished. The waist. band 11 may be finished in any convenient manner. Near the lower end each of the plaekets has a pocket 14, opening at an edge of the placket. The latter has a series of clasps or fasteners '15 of any suitable type. These may consist, as shown for example in the (rawings. ot' the usual clasp fasteners employed with gloves and similar articles, and they may beof any neces ary number to permit the placket to he closed from top to bottom. The back tent likewise has a series of similar clasp 'l'asteners 16.

At the upper end each of the plackets has permanently associated therewith a closing member 17, consisting torexample, of a hook 18 having at one end a head 19. The head is positioned on the inside oi. the waist band and the hook projects through the material to the outside of the corresponding placket. edge. The other placket edge. at a point op osite the hook, has an eyelet or buttonhoih 20, through which the hook can project, as is shown most clearly in Fig. 1, for the purpose securing, the placket edges ren'iovably together.

T provide a fastener 21 of any suitable kind, for securing the upper ends of the font edges together. This fastener may consist, for example, of a hook 22 adapted to engage a retaining bar 23, the hook and the bar being respectively secured at the font edges.

It will be seen that the members 17 perform double functions. They serve to secure the upper placket edges together and at the same time to attach the free ends of the acljusling straps to the waist band. The elastic straps cause the/waist band of the skirt. to conform, when suitably adjusted, to

the waist of the wearer of the garment.

By means of thcbuckle 26 the straps can be lengthened or shortened as necessary to adapt the skirt for use by persons having different Waist measurements. It Will be understood too, that the extensible or elastic miture of the straps causes the garmentto fit snugly, the material being gathered or shit-red at the waist band adjacent to the straps, when the latter ca use the garment to tita waist smaller in circumference than the normal circumference of the Waist band.

If so desired, the back fent 13 can be dis pensed with, the straps being fastened at the back to the waist band, which is there unbroken. In order to adjust the elastic straps 25, they can be drawn from the sheaths, and after being suitably adjusted, the sheaths can be smoothed out and caused to again envelop the straps. 7

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent:

1. A skirt having a placket, a fastener permanently associatedwith one edge of said placket and adapted to project through the other edge of said placket to secure the edges together, a sheath, and an elastic waistband-adjusting strap in said sheath, said strap having the end remote from said placket permanently attached to the Waistband of said skirt, and further, having means at the free end for removably attaching to said fastener.

2. A skirt having a placket, a fastener mounted at one edge of said placket, the other edge of said placket having an eyelet arranged to permit said fastener to project therethrough whereby the placket edges can be secured together, and-an extensible elastic strap secured at one end to the Waist band of the skirt and having a member at the free end adapted to attach removably to said fastener when the same projects through said eyelet.
