T0 JOHN H. PANABAKER AND ONE-THIRD TO EDGAR WATERPROOF BURIAL-VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Application filed October 24, 1911. Serial No. 656,422.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. STAMM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Waterproof Burial-Vault, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in what may be termed burial vaults, more especially that type wherein the coflin or casket is incased in a sarcophagus or receptacle deposited in the excavation usually 'recelving the wooden case containing the coffin or casket.
The invention has for its object to provide for rendering the casket inclosure or sarcofphagus efi'ectively water or moisture proo A further object is to carry out the aforesaid end in a simple, inexpensive and. expeditious manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
-In the accompanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my lIl vention wherein it will be understood that various changes and modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit thereof, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my invention. Fig. 2
is a transverse section thereof, the closure or cover being in elevated position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the sarcophagus or vault, with the closure removed. Fi s. 4 and 5 are detached perspective views 0 the sling-attaching eye-equipped members for use in putting the closures in position upon the vault. i
In putting my invention into practice, I suitably mold or form preferably of concrete, which may be reinforced, two receptacles or inclosures 1 and 2, respectively, of suitable dimensions, one, however, being designed to be received within the other and sufliciently smaller, to leave an intervening space 3 therebetween at the sides, ends and bottom. Suitable closures 4 and 5 are provided for the receptacles 1 and 2, respectively, the same also being formed or molded of similar material and having a space 6 between them, practically in continuation of the space 3 intermediate the receptacles 1 and 2. The space 3 and the space 6 between the receptacles and the closures, respectively, are filled in with liquid-pitch 7, asphalt or other water or moisture proof material, when the closures-are in place upon the receptacles, the outer closure 5 being suitably provided with sprues or holes 8 through which the pitch may be poured, the pitch thus forming a continuous binder between the receptacles and the closures, as well as rendering the same proof against the entrance of moisture or water thereinto.
In order to allow of the binder, formed by the filler 7 introduced between the covers and the receptacles, effecting the requisite binding action particularly between the covers 01'' closures, the walls of the space within the upper or outer closure or cover are extended vertically and horizontally, or formed wholly within the outer or upper closure. In other words the outer or. upper closure is: adapted or chambered to both receive or house the inner closure and also provide the space for receiving the filler introduced between the two closures. Also in the opposed, or meeting edges or surfaces of the receptacles and the closures are produced grooves or slots 9, at both sides of the pitch- receiving spaces 3 and 6, and into these grooves or slots is inserted mortar 11 and 12, preferably of a cement character for perfecting the closure of the joints at said points and for excluding the pitch from the interior of the vault as well as to prevent said pitch from making its appearance exteriorly. In order to facilitate putt-ing the closures or covers in position upon the respective receptacles, said closures or covers have embedded or molded thereinto an eyeequipped'member 13 of approximate Lewisson-outline, as in Fig. 4, or a like member 14 of the outline indicated in Fig. 5, the eyes being designated 15. and 16, respectively, and with which eyes the sling (not shown), usually employed for hoisting heavy bodies or objects, may be readily connected,
for elevating the -closures into such position. The Lewisson-like eye-equipped member is, itself, provided with outstanding lateral offsets or shoulders 17 facing or presented upwardly for more effectively anchoring the same in the concrete.
It will be noted from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying illustration, that I haveprovided an absolutely water tight and jointed vault, as has been verified by practical demonstration, and which it is therefore thought recommends it to general consideration.
What is claimed is 1. In a burial vault, the combination of inner' and outer spaced apartreceptacles, and provided with grooves extending entirely around the upper edge of each of said receptacles, corresponding spaced apart 'closures for said receptacles, said closures provided with grooves extending entirely around their edges, a liquid water tight filling for the continuous space resulting from such spacing apart of said receptacles and sand closures, a plastic binder for said grooves adapted to hold the closures in position during the setting of the aforementioned water proof material.
2. In a receptacle the combination of a rectilineal box, a second rectilineal box positioned Within the first rectilineal box and liquid waterproof material in between said boxes and closures, means formed in the closure whereby the entire structure may be engaged to thereby lift the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
