UNITED STATFMFATENT OFFICE.
HENRY W. GEHANT, OF WEST BROOKLYN, ILLINOIS.
EXTENSION-CUFF FOR TOPS OF BOOTS.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. GEHANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at `West Brooklyn, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Extension-Cuff for Tops of Boots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a new and useful extension cuff for the top of a boot.
As an object of the invention, it is the aim to provide an extension cuif, adapted to be stitched or otherwise fastened to t-he upper portion of a boot leg, and provided with a draw string for tightening the cuif about the leg of the wearer, in order to prevent foreign matter, such as water or the like, from overiiowing the top of the boot.
There is disclosed in the drawings, certain features of construction, but in practical iields these features may necessitate alterations, to which the patentee is entitled, provided the alterations fall within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings Figure l is a view in perspective of a boot, showing the improved extension cuff as applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a sectional view. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the cuff detached. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, showing the inner portion 3 and the outer portion 5 of the cuff extension extending farther down the boot leg than is shown in Figs. l and 2.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the usual form of boot leg, while 2 denotes the extension cuff which may be constructed of oil cloth or gossamer or any other suitable waterproof material.`
This extension cuil' is provided with an overturned portion 3, which forms a channel for a draw string 4, whereby the cuit' may be shirred or drawn tight about the leg of the wearer. This overturned portion extends downwardly upon the inner side of the boot leg, while the outer portion 5 of the outer cui extends upon the outside of the boot leg. The outer portion 5 and the inner portion of the cuff are stitched, vulcanized or otherwise secured to the top of the boot Specification of Letters Patent.

leg, as shown at 6. It has been found preferable to fasten the cuit' by stitching, and it will be seen that in this manner water 0r other foreign matter is prevented from entering or overflowing the boot top.
In purchasing a pair of boots, substantially knee high, a pair of cuffs may, also be purchased, and afterward attached to the boots, thereby lessening the expense of buying boots that are long enough and can be drawn about a leg to prevent the overiow of water.
In Fig. 4 the inner portion 3 and the outer portion 5 of the cuff extension are adapted to fit the leg of the boot snugly and closely, owing to the fact that the outer portion 5 is of a diameter, just suiIicient to iit over the outside surface of the leg of the boot, while the inner portion 3 is of a dialneter just sufficient to enter the leg of the boot. Where the inner and outer portions 3 and 5 engage the boot leg, they are made stiff, and the stitching G is omitted and instead of such stitching spurs 5a are provided, to embed in the boot leg, to hold the cuit extension from pulling oit. However, in Figs. l, 2 and 3 the spurs 5 are also shown together with the stitching.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is l. In combination with a boot, an extension cuil' of double thickness, thereby forming inner and outer portions, the inner portion arranged upon the inside of the boot leg while the outer portion is arranged upon the outside of the boot leg, means for fastening the inner and outer portions to the boot leg, said cuit' having a channel, and a draw string in said channel.
2. An extension cuff for boot legs comprising an area of waterproof material, folded upon itself to form a channel and inner and outer portions, one adapted to be arranged upon the inside of the boot and the other upon the outside, said inner and outer portions being adapted tc be stitched to the boot leg, and a draw string in said channel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
H'ENRY W. GEHANT.
