HENRY J'. MARTIN, OF BROKLYN,"NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE REECE BUTTON HOLE .MACHINE COMPANY, OFYBDSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MAINE.
NEEDLE-SETTNG DEVICE.
To all whom t may concern:
I tion.
. 2-2 of Fig.. l.
veDtion,
' vThe principal :object hereof is to provide for the ready and accurate setting of the .needle in proper` position by the means hereinafter referred to, which may be originally adjusted or standardized, whereby 1n the subsequent insertion of needles they will '1nvariably be brought to the predetermined position. This object is accomplished herein by providing' atthe operating end of the needle bar or *carrier a part which is adjustable along the needle bar and has means for holdinCt it to the bar in its'adjusted or standardized position. together with a means independent thereof for detachably securn ing a needle in a given position with relation to said part.
I will iirst describe one form of the device embodying; thev present invention, and will thereafter point out the novel features-inl the vention, showingr a portion of aneedle bar of a convenient type with the improvementl hereof located at'the foot of said bar. Fig'. 2- is a horizontal cross-section on the plane Fig 3 is a front-elevation of the particular parte involved in this indetached from Vthe needle bar proper. Fig. d is a vertical central section of the same parts that are shown in Fig. 3 taken on the plane 4-4 of Fig.'2.

detachable block is sho\vn as conncctcd to the needle bar in a non-adjustable manner so as to substantially constitute a. part of;
the needle bar, and it will be so considered herein.
C is a needle of a convenient type.
adjusted position. lThis adjustable part l),v i
while it may take various physical forms, is shown as an internal part or plug'. Refer-v ring to its further details, the part D is f shown cylindrical in form and arranged lengthwise within the needle bar-or the part B of said bar,v so as to be longitudinally movable, and the needle b ar is internallyA bored The part .D being adjustable along the needle bar, means for holding' it in adjusted position are provided in the form of a hold-- ing screw E ,passing from'the exterior of the bar into enab'ement with the plug'. For. conveniencelprefer that the threaded stem of the holdingserew E be ene'aged within a threaded r6/6985 in the plugD as shown, so as to move therewith,` the movement in that case being` permitted by slotting the sidewall of theb'ar atT, this forming a recess for giving the yscrew E longitudinal play. In the figures the plug D'is shown a's adjusted to an .intermediate Iposition. and there secured.l i
Within the interior longitudinal bore of the needle bar is fitted the needle C substantially in alinementwith the plug D. When the needle'is set into position by being forced up through its boreto the position indicated` to receive the part Dand permit its movesewing meclianisi'n, then tight-en the screw G' to secure the needle 1n place, then cause o r allow the plug D to descend into intimate oontact with the butt end of the needle, and
linally securely and permanently tighten the holding screw E, whereby the position oi 'the plug'thus carefully predetermined Will be maintained so that every succeeding nee,
dle will be readily and accurately set in eiract position.
lt ,will be noted that as disclosed in the drawings, the needle. securing` means or screw G is independent of the plug holding means or screw E, so that When detaclungvv and attaching needles, theplug will not be interfered with.
The means of positioning and holding to the needle bar A the detachable portion B thereof, forms' no part of the present. invention and need not be Afurther descrilmd herein than to relier to the leftward extending boss or projection H from the portion B which passes through a corresponding aper.
" scope ot' the present invention, and l therefore do not Wish to be limited 'to any features or details except as set forth the appended claiins.l v
The block D is shown slilrhtly greater in diameter than the needle and thereby it may not drop out of the needle bar because too large `.tor the portion of the interior bore which the needle engages.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. l sewing machine needle setting device comprising in combination with the needle Ycarrier, a needle stop consisting of an interna-lplug freely slidable longitudinally Within an internal bore in line Wit-li the needle, and adapted to be lockedand `unlocked therein, a adapted for locking said stop in adjusted position, andv a .needle securing device `:for detachably securing-a needle 1n thefzposltion determined by saidstops adjustment.:
