COMBINATION SATGHEL, CART, AND CAMP-STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Toall gohom .itmay concern:-
Be t known that I, HABNEY H. JAMES, .a citizen of the United States, residing at 'Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles .use the same.
This invention relates broadly to. traveling bags of the convertible type, and as its principal object contemplates the provision .of a device of this character which may be readily converted from an ordinary traveling bag into a wheeled baby carriage, or into a modified form of camp stool.
A further object isto construct this in= vention with such regard to proportion,
number and arrangement of parts that it may be cheaply manufactured and will be durable and efficient in its action.
The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended hereto and form a part of this application.
With reference to the drawings, wherein d have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it ,-1s reduced to practice, and throu hout the several views of which similar re erence numerals designate corresponding parts: F igure 1 is a side elevation of the satchel or hand bag, illustrating the on the various adjustable elements in their folded position; Fig. 2 is a top plan View with the hinged covers removed; Fig. 3 is aside elevation with the various elements of the satchel arranged to permit the utilization of the satchel as a baby cart; Fig. 4 is an end view of the various elements in folded position; Fig. 5 is a similar view with the end eovers artially opened; Fig. 6 is a section fine 66 of Fig. 2; Fig. 7 is a detail view of the device employed as a supporting leg when the satchel is used as a baby cart; Flg. 8 'is a detail view of the clamping device em loyed in securing the supporting leg in adjusted position; Fig. 9 is-an edge elevation of the device shown in Fig. 8.
Proceeding now to the description of the drawings, the numeral 1 designates as an and are provided with the ordinary grip handles 8 and 9.
U-shaped handle 10, which may be formed of stra iron, wood, or any other suitable materi I is pivoted at its terminals, as at 11, adjacent one end of the satchel and .on-the side walls thereof. The handle 10 is designed to be swung on its pivots 11 into a posltion of rearward extenslon from the a member 1, as illustrated in Fig. 3. As a means for holding the handles in the desired position with relation to the body of the satchel, .there have been provided a pair of spring clips 12 and 13, the operation of .Which will be apparent by reference to Fig. 4.
The supporting leg of this invention ineludes a substantially U-shaped frame, illustrated inFig. 7. This frame includes the slde bars 14 and 15, which are connected adjacent one terminal by .a cross bar 16, secured in the usual manner by bolts, rivets, or any other suitable fastening means, as at 17. A pair of inwardly extending laterally projecting stub shafts 18 .and 19 are carried by the members 14 and 15, respectively, for a purpose to be next described.
The stub shafts 18 and 19 are journaled in the central apertures 20 of a pair. of bearing plates 21, as illustrated in detail in Fig. 4. The members 21 are bolted, or otherwise secured, as at 23, to one end wall of the satchel, and are each provided on their outer faces with the two grooves 24 and 25, which respectively extend in parallel relation to the longitudinal and vertical axes of the satchel. The members 14 and 15 are made of resilient metal. It will be observed, by reference to Fig. 4, that the members 14 and 15 are designed to be secured in adjusted position by being sprung into either of the two grooves 24 and 25. When the supporting legs are employed as supporting legs for the baby carriage they are arranged in the groove 24.
The wheel members employed in converting the satchel into a baby carriage are two in number and are arranged one on each side Patented Dec. 16,1913}.
7 of the end of the member 1, remote from the supporting legs. The steel frame of the satchel 'is shaped to produce substantially rectangular housings 26 designed to receive the wheels. The two wheels are identical in construction and it will, therefore, be necessary to describe only one of them in detail. The wheel 27 is journaled in the usual manner between the free ends of the fork 28, the fixed terminal of which is pivoted, as-at 29, within the housing, and carries a sector brace member 30 pivoted to one arm of the fork, as at 31. In folded position the wheel 27 and the fork 28 are disposed within the housing 26 and are hidden from view, the
member 30 being grippingly engaged by a leaf spring 32 secured to the inner wall of the housing in any desired manner. As a means for bracing the fork 28 in extended position, there is provided a laterally extending lug 33 secured to the inner wall of the housing and disposed to engage a notch formed in the member 30, adjacent the free end thereof. An expansive helical spring 34 is secured at one terminal-to the member 28, and at the other to the brace 30, being thus disposed to normally hold the member 30 in engagement with the member 33.
1n reduction to practice, I have found that the form of my invention, illustrated in the drawings and referred to in the above description, as the preferred embodiment, is the most efficient and practical; yet, realiz ing that the conditions concurrent with the adoption of my device will necessarily vary, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in details of construction, proportion, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to, when required, without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: I
1. A satchel adapted to be employed as a camp stool or a baby carriage, said satchel including a metallic frame, a covering for said frame, a U-shaped member pivoted at one end of said metallic frame and adapted to be secured in a position of parallel relation to the longitudinal or vertical axis of the satchel, aU-shaped handle pivoted on said satchel and normally disposed for engagement with the two sides and one end wall thereof, said handle being adapted to be swung into a position of longitudinal extension from the satchel when the device is employed as a baby carriage, a pair of 'spring clips for holding said handle in exthe housing and arranged for engagementwith a notch formed in said bracing arm,-
said wheel, fork and bracin arm being adapted to be disposed interior y of the said housing when the satchel is employed in its normal capacity.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a metallic frame having a covering therefor, of a U shaped member pivoted at one end of said metallic frame, a substantially rectangular housin formed in each side of said frame, a for pivotally mounted within each of said housings, a wheel secured to each of said forks and means for locking said wheel within said housing, comprising a curved arm secured to each of said forks, a spring secured to each of said arms and said forks and a lug formed within said housings.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a metallic frame having a covering therefor, of a U shaped member pivoted at one terminal of said frame, a pair of spring clips, a substantially rectangular housing formed in each side of said frame, a fork pivotally mounted within each of said housings, a wheel secured to each of said forks and means for locking said wheels within said housings, comprising a curved arm secured intermediate the ends of each of said forks and provided with 'a notch adjacent its free terminal, a spring secured to each of said arms and said forks and a laterally extending lug formed in each of said housings adapted for engagement with the notch in said arm.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
