on TED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
JOHN W. REED, 0F MULBERRY, INDIANA.
PAPER-LIFTING DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WV. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mulberry, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Lifting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in paper lifting devices and particularly to a device adapted to direct the free end of a roll of paper or other material outwardly from the roll.
The prime object of my invention is to provide a lifting device adapted to be associated with rolls of material to engage the free end of the material and direct the same away from the roll into position whereby the same may be readily grasped by the operator, when it is desired to remove a section of the material from the roll.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown the preferred form which my invention may take.
In said drawing, the figure represents a perspective View of a roll holder and roll of material, showing my invention as applied thereto.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, the same numerals designating corresponding parts throughout the several figures, 4 is the base of a roll holder having a pair of standards 5 secured thereto. A drum 6 is pivotally mounted in the standards in any desired manner and is adapted to receive a roll of material 7 A cutting knife '8 having supporting arms 9 is pivotally secured to the standards so that the knife will bear against the upper portion of the roll of material, one of the arms being secured to each of the standards 5, and the knife 8 extending across the width of the roll.
In the usual roll holder after a piece of material has been severed and it is desired to remove an additional portion of the material therefrom, it is customary to partially rotate the roll to move the severed end be- Specification of Letters Patent.

yond the knife. It is always difficult to grasp the severed ends under these conditions, as the same will lie closely against the surface of the roll. In order that the severed ends may be easily grasped, I employ a device positioned so as to bear against the roll adjacent the cutting knife, whereby when the roll is partially rotated the severed end of the strip of material will be directed outwardly.
Referring to the drawing, it will be seen that I employ a device comprising an arm 10*, which is pivotally secured at one end to one of the standards 5, and extends beyond the cutting edge of the knife 8 and has at its other end a deflecting finger 11. The arm 10 extends to th side of the roll of material, while the deflecting finger 11 is bent inwardly so as to rest upon the surface of the roll of material near one side and adjacent the cutting edge. The end of the defleeting finger is beveled as shown at 12, so as to closely engage the surface of the roll of material. When it is desired to remove a section of the material from the roll, it is only necessary to slightly rotate the roll to move the severed end of the material beyond the cutting knife and the finger 11 will engage the end of the material and will direct the same outwardly, and it will be clearly understood that the end may be readily grasped.
What I claim as new is:
The herein described paper lifting device, comprising a roll holder adapted to contain a roll of material, a pair of downwardly *urved supporting arms pivoted to said holder, a cutting knife between the lower end of said arms and secured thereto, and an arm pivoted to said holder below one of said downwardly curved arms, and a deflecting finger secured to last said arm and projecting inwardly from the outer end thereof, said finger lying wholly beyond said knife and adapted to engage the surface of said roll beyond said knife.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. REED.
