SAW-TABLE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 24, 1914i.
Application led July 10, 1912. Serial No. 708,585.
My invention relates'to saw table-attach-v ments, and more particularly'to guards for rotary saws, and it has for its'object'to provide al1 improved form of guard which is movable with the saw in its adjustment relatively to the `saw table, and is also adjustable relatively to the saw. l
A furth'er objectv of my invention is lto afford a removable' portion on the guard,
ing engagement with t e body portion of the guard, and means for. enabling its ready removal when desired.
Still another object of my invention consists inalor'ding means for preventing fine dust and shavings from being thrown in the face ofthe` operator, as he stands in front of the saw table to control the work.
To these and other ends the invention consistsl in certain improvements. and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features' being pointed out in the claim at the end of the specication.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a saw table, showing the application of a preferred embodiment of my invention thereto.
3 is a sectional view on the line 3.3 of
Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line aa-Lla of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional 4 is a standard which is adjustably mount- Fig. 2 is a detail eley vation of a portion of the saw guard; Fig.
'ed on the support 3'. To this end, in the present embodiment, the standard 4.- is provlded with a base or attaching portion 5,
slotted at (S, and held adjustably in engage-` ment with the support 3, by means of bolts 7, or other suitable attaching means.
I The guard' comprises a body portion 8 which is sloted at 9 and held in'adjustable relation to tie standard '4 by means of bolts 10. In certain kinds of work, it is frequently desirablei to leave the upper part of the saw free from obstruction by the guard, and to accomplish this, I provide a removable portion l1 which is normally held in engagement with the body portion 8 in the manner that I will now describe. The body portion 8 and the removable portion 11 have an interlocking connection with each other, preferably being dovetailed as shown in dotted lines 1n Figs. 1 and 2.
In order to hold the removable portion 11in operative position on the body portion 8, the former carries a plate 12y which is suitably attached thereto and forms a downwardly extending flange 13 adapted to overlie a portion of one face of the body portion.
Onq its opposite face, the removable portion ll 1s provided with a catch 14, which is pivotally mounted at 15 and c'arries a thumb piece 16 by which it may be turned.,
17 is aleat spring, formed by being struck from the removable portion 11, and 'adapted to engage a shoulder' on'the catchll, as
shown in Fig. 1, whereby to hold the same in locking position, and prevent the removable portion being detached 'from the body portion. .To release the removable portion, the spring 17 is depressed, permitting the catch to be turned, whereupon the removable portion'11 may be moved laterally of the body portion 8.
In order to protect the operator, and prevent dust and shavings from being thrown from thesaw into his face, I provide a deflector on the guard. This is preferably accomplished in the present embodiment by means of flanges 18 which' are secured to the removable portion 11., and extend outwardly and downwardly therefrom. This ,affords an inverted U-shaped device arranged immediately above the tp of thepsaw, which serves to catch all of the fine dust and shavings that are thrown upwardly by the rotating movement of the saw. Bythis confl struction, it is possible for the operator to stand in front of the saw, in proper posiog r V. 1,118,477
tion to control the Work, Without being subjected to the large amount of dust and dirt that is thrown oil from saw tables as generally constructed.
ln the claim: I
ln a fastening means, the combination with body portion, of ai removable portion having a, doveta-iled connection with the bolyportion', a swinging .latch pivoted to one face of the removable portion and 10.
adapted to embrace the'corresponding side of the body portion, and a flange on the v opposite face of the removable portion arrangeto overlie the body portion. l p EDWARD J. DAVIS'. Witnesses: Y
