PACKAGE AND MAIL TYING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR M. GRANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lansford, in the county of Bottineau and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Package and Mail Tying Device, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention appertains to a device for tying packages, mail matter or the like, and aims to provide a novel and improved appliance of that character.

It is the object of the present invention to provide a tying device including a cord or other flexible element adapted to be wound around a package, a bundle of mail matter or the like, and a novel means for adjusting the length of the cord or flexible element to accommodate the package, bundle or the like, and for retaining the cord or flexible element in place when applied to a package or bundle.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a device of the nature indicated, which may be repeatedly employed, which shall be simple, compact and inexpensive in construction, so as not to unduly encumber the bundle or package to which the device is applied, and which will be simple, convenient, practical and efficient in its use.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The invention has been illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying draving, wherein Figure 1 is an enlarged sectional view of the improved tying device. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device as applied to a bundle or package of letters, with the coupling members opened or separated, for the purpose of clearness.

In carrying out the invention, there is provided a coupling member 1 which is in the form of a small circular case, and which has a central spindle 2 therein, and an annular channel-shaped reel or spool 3 surrounding the spindle 2 adapted to rotate between the sides or faces of the case, a

spiral spring 4 connecting the reel or spool 3 and the spindle 2 to spring press to reel or spool. Upon the spool or reel 3 is normally wound a cord or other flexible element 5, which extends through an aperture 6 in the periphery or rim of the case.

Attached to the free or outer end of the cord or flexible element 5 is a second cou pling member 7, which in the form of a disk, preferably of the same diameter as the case, and adapted to mate with one side or face of the case, the disk 7 being provided with a central socket clasp element 8, and the said side face of the case being provided with a central headed clasp element 9 ar ranged to enter the socket element 8 for springing or snapping the two coupling members together, as seen in Fig. 1. The elements 8 and 9 are of the usual glove fastener type, in order that the two coupling members may be readily attached and detached.

The rim or marginal portions of the disk 7 and cooperating side or face of the case 1 are preferably offset slightly toward each other, as seen in Fig. 1, to grip the cord or flexible element therebetween and to provide sufiicient space between the coupling members, to accommodate the flanges or securing means of the clasp elements 8 and 9.

The spring i is arranged to rotate the spool or reel 3 in such a direction, as to normally wind the cord or flexible element 5 thereon, whereby the free portion of the cord will be retracted within the case or coupling member 1.

In employing the present device for tying a package or bundle, the disk or coupling member 7 is placed upon one side of the package or bundle, as suggested in Fig. 2, and the case or coupling member 1 is then passed around the package or bundle in the proper manner, to cause the cord or flexible element 5 to wind about the package or bundle, one or more times, the cord or flexible element, being unwound from the spool or reel 3 as the case or coupling member 1 is passed around the package or bundle. Thus, when the cord or flexible element has been properly wound about the package or bundle, it being understood that the socket clasp element 8 is exposed, the case or coupling member 1 may be attached to the disk 7 by pressing the headed clasp element 9 into engagement with the clasp element 8 of the disk 7, whereby the cord ami will be retained in place to hold the package or bundle intact. The several portions of the cord or flexible element 5 adjoining the coupling members 1 5 and 7 may be readily clamped t ierebetween, to assist in properly holding the cord against displacement While on the package or bundle.

The present device Will accommodate vari- 10 one sizes of packages or bundles, the cord 5 unwinding from the spool or reel to adjust itself to the particular package or bundle.

To detach the device from the package 15 or bundle, the case or coupling member 1 is snapped out 01" engagement with the disk or coupling ember 7, which Will enable the cord or flexible element to be unwound from the package or bundle, the cord again being 29 ound upon the spool or reel under the influence of the spring.

In the manner indicated, the present device enables the package or bundle to be readily bound or tied Without appreciably encumbering the package or bundle, it being observed that the tying device may be repeatedly employed.
