EXERCISING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 8, 1915.
Application filed July 9, 1914. 7 Serial No. 849,950.
The invention more particularlyrelates to horizontal bars adapted for exercising purposes which are supported by and serve as a permanent connection for the headand foot of a bedstead. I.
, A further object of the invention is to provide novel means for bracing the head and foot of a bed to the side rails thereof,
. after in connection with the drawing which said bracing means also serving to support and rigidly brace the exercising bars above referred to. y One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawing and its construction will be fully, described hereinforms a part of this specification,-and in which:' a Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a bed constructed in accordance with my invention and embodying a pair of horizontal bars, and other exercising devices. Fig.2 is a detail sectional view of the horizontal-bar supporting means. Fig.3 is a horizontal section on an enlarged scale of the Wrist-exercising device shown in Fig. 1, and, Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section of the bracing means employed.
The reference numerals 1 and 2 designate the parallel side rails of the bed constructed of metal and connected in the usual manner to the head 3 and foot 4 of the bed. The head 3 comprises a transverse bar 5 and two oppositely-curved side supports 6 connected to the transverse bar 5 by parallel vertical bars 7 formed at their upper ends with sleeves 8 through which the curvedside supports 6 extend and at their lower ends with horizontal sleeves 9 through which the transverse bar 5extends. It will thus be seen that the inner member of each of the pairs of vertical bars 7 of the head of the bed are separated, permitting access to the bed between said bars.
The curved side supportso are connected at points opposite the ends of the side rails 2 by a truss rod 10 provided with sleeves 11 to receive the side supports 6 and the sleeves 12 having upwardly projecting sockets 13 to receive the lower ends of inclined braces 14, the upper ends of which are secured in sockets 15 depending from sleeves 16.
Between each pair of vertical bars 7 is supported a wrist exerciser of the construction shown inFig. 3 and comprising a hollow spool 17 through which extends a bolt 18, the ends of which are secured to the bar 7 as shown in Fig. 3.. Within the hollow spool is disposed a spiral spring 19, one end of which is secured to the spool and the other to one of the vertical bars 7, thus adapting the spool to be turned for wrist exercising. The foot of the bed comprises a horizontal bar 20 and two oppositely-curved side supports 21 and, 22, the latter being connected by a truss 23. The truss 23 is secured to the upper ends of the curved side supports 21 and 22 by inclined braces 24 and vertical braces 24, the upper ends of which are secured in sockets 25 and 25 depending from sleeves 26, said sleeves 26 being also formed with integral sockets 27 for thereception of the upper ends of the side supports of the foot of the bed.
The sleeves l6 and 26 are horizontally alined for the reception of apair of horizontal bars 28, and it will be noted that by this constructionythe horizontal bars are supported at the upper ends of the vertical supports of both the head and foot of the bed, said vertical supports being separated as shown to permit free access to the bed from either end thereof to permit free access to the horizontal bars. The numeral 29 designates hand grasps depending from rings 30 which are freely slidable along the bars 28 and afford a means for arm exercise.
The side rails 1 and 2 are preferably braced to the ends of the bed by inclined braces 31 bolted or otherwise secured to the ends of the bed and to said side rails.
An important feature of the present invention is the manner of connecting and bracing the side rails to the ends of the bed by the truss braces shown, which afford a very rigid structure and firmly support the head and foot members of the bed to the side rails and also provide a substantial support for the vertical braces which support the horizontal exercising bars. Afeature' of importance also is the means for securing the vertical supports of the two ends of the bed to the horizontal exercising bars '28,
such means comprising the sleeves '16 -a-nd-26,
each formed with a depending lug 26 and acouplingdevice compr sing a plurality or v sockets to receive theend's of the side sup- 7 ports and the upper ends of the vertical supports of the ends of the bed and also formed wi ha socket 26 on its upper side to receive the depending lugs 26 of the sleeves 26 and 16. I
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a means for bracing the curved side members-21 and 22 of the foot of the bed to the vertical "supports 2 L comprising tubular braces '32 secured by bolts 33 extending through the *adjacent parts of the structurea-nd into the 7 ends of said tubular braces. The specific relative arrangement and construction of these braces is not essential to the invention and'may be varied indefinitely. 1 e
The depending lugs 26* of the "sleeves 26 aresecured Within sockets 26 by cotter pins 84:"and'by merely removing the pins 34, the horizontal bar's-28 may be disconnected-and removed'from the bed whendesired.
i It will be noted that the-construction as above described permits access to the horizontal "bars from either end-of the bed and the said bars are '-firml-y"supported and con-' stitute a part of the bed structure, serving as they do to connect the head'a'nd footmembers together permanently.
"While I have" herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of-th'e invention, I do not wish to confine myself thereto as various rorms, modifications "and arrangement of the parts as-shown may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the inventionasclaimed.
\Vhat I claim'as new is "1. The combination with the head and foot members of a bedstructure, a pair of horizontalbars connecting said members, 'horiz'ontally-disposed'truss braces connecting the sides of said members andvertical supports between said truss braces and bars. 2. The combination with the head and foot members of a bed structure, each comprising separated side supports to permit access to the body fromeither end thereof, of a pair of horizontal exercisingbars supported upon said side supports and connecting'saidhead 'a'nd' 'foot members; i V
3. The comb'nation. with "the head and foot members of a bed structure ofa pair of horizontal exercising bars 'supported and means for support upon said members, 7 mg sa1d bars comprlsing horizontally-alined sleeves provided with dependinglugs, and
sockets secured to said members adapted to receive said lugs.
4. The combination with the' head; and foot members of a bed ;structure, each comprising separated side supports toiperm'it access to the [bed from) eitherp en'd"thereof,
of apair of: horizontal exercising bars supported upon said side supports and connect- 7 ing said head and foot members, truss rods connecting sa1ds1desuppor'ts, vertical supports for said "head and 'foot members, and 1 means for connecting "and supporting said horizontal bars ,andsaid side-supports, each GOIIIPIlSlHgfl coupling d6V1CG COI1S1St1Ilg of a plurality of integral. sockets, to receive {the V 7 ends .of said sidesupports 'andvertical "supports, an upper socket, and g'sleeve members I each having a depending 1 lug within said upper socket. e In t'estim' 'ny whereof I affix signature in presence of two witnesses.
