IMPROVEMENT IN TABLES OR STANDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,550, dated October 31, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES THORNTON, of Oswego, in the county of Oswego and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable improvement in Tables, Stands, Ste.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.

Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a partial section and perspective view of my table.

My invention has relation to certain new and useful improvements in adjustable tables or stands for holding music, looking-glasses, or for any other suitable purpose and consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices intended to serve as a useful apparatus for the purpose mentioned.

In the accompanying drawing, illustrating this invention, A represents thebase supporting-block and B the upright standard of my invention. This standard B is constructed in two parts. The lower part a is iirmly secured in any suitable and substantial manner to the base-block A. In the top of this lower part a a socket is made for the reception of the swivel z on the lower end ofthe upper part b of the standard B. This socket and swivel constitutes the swiveljoint, upon which the table revolves horizontally. To prevent the swivel z from being raised from its position in the socket the groove 7L is made in the lower end of the swivel z, as shown on the drawing. In this groove the key f moves as the table revolves and prevents the swivel from rising' out of its place in the socket, and at the same time allows it to revolve easily therein. C represents a cleft formed in the upper part of the standard near the top, which extends up; ward vertically from the point s through the center of the standard. From the point b upward the cleft is enlarged for the lug d on the bottom of the stand-leaf, which revolves vertic` ally therein. E represents a thumb-screw, which passes through the standard just below the expanded portion of the cleft, and by means of which the walls of the cleft can be pressed together against the lug to hold the leaf of the table in any required position. The lng d is securely fastened to the bottom of the leaf F of the table by means of screws or other suitable fastenings, and is made somewhat smaller than the cleft c, so as to allow it to revolve freely therein upon the pin y.

I claim" as my invention- The combination of the standard B, having spring-cleft C, clamp-screw E, and swivel-joint z, with the leaf F having lug d, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
