CHARLES n.4 wenns, or wlALToN, Kansas.
Specification of Letters Patent.
appnpauonjaied Mays, 191e. serial No. 95,646.,
To all whom z5 may concern Be itknown that I, CrmnLns R. lVnnnE, a citizen of, the United States, residingwat Walton, in the county ofvHarvey and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful limprovements m Garment or' Shoe Fasteners, of which the following `is a specification;
The invention relates to fasteners, and
more particularly to the class ofgarmentjor shoe fasteners.
Theprimaryobj ect` of the invention' is the provision of a fastener wherein the openings in a garment, shoe upper,jcorset or the like can be closed and fastenedy in a yquick and convenient manner, without the necessity of the use of buttons, hooks, elastic webbing, lacing or other like devices usually employed for this purpose.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a fastener of this character where'- in the construction thereof is novel in form so as to render it practical and reliable as well as assuring the effective fastening of the garment, shoe, corset or the like with despatch.
A further object of the invention is the provision ofV fastener of this character which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in its purpose, strong, durable and readily and easily manipulated and inexpensive in manufacture and installation.
Other objects will be in part obvious and in part hereinafter set forth.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and the scope of the application of which will be indicated in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings: l
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a portion of-a garment showing an opening with the fastener constructed in accordance with the invention applied to parts adjacent each other of the garment for closing the gap therebetween and the covering for the fastener removed;
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2" of Fig. l;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a plan view of one part of the runner.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding partsv throughoutf the several views of the drawing.
Referring tto the drawings in detail, A designatesV generally a portion of a garment;
b andc the parts of the garmentV separatedv from each other to provide a closingk lgap therebetween, andthis gap or opening accommodates the fastener ,hereinafter fully, described. M ,n
The fas-tenerl comprises two rows of keepers B, the keepers injeachvroiwbeingarranged in seriesv and each including outer and inner-plates 5 and@ respectively which are fastened in place against opposite faces of each Ypart of the garment at the edges adjacent each other. These plates 5 and 6 are constructed from a single strip of material bent on itself to form a substantially arrow shaped socket 7 which extends inwardly between outwardly bulged portions S bent from the plates 5 and 6, as sho-wn, for detachable engagement therewith of a runner or slide C hereinafter fully described. Alternate outer plates 5 of the series constituting each row are formed with slots 9, through vwhich engage sleeve-like tongues 10 formed on the remaining outer plate of said series, and in this manner the keepers are hinged or flexibly connected together.
The slide or runner C comprises a series of plates 11 each formed at Opposite ends with knobs or heads 12 which are shaped in cross section correspondingly to the shape ,of the socket 7 and'gradually taper in reverse directions toward opposite ends so as to freely pass through the sockets 7 in the keepers B when the slide or runner C is moved in the gap between the. parts ZJ and o of the garment for the fastening thereof Y and the closing of the gap or opening between the edges of said parts adjacent each other.
The -plates 11 are formed with medial tongues and slots 13 and 1l respectively, the slots being adapted to receive the tongues which, at their ends, are bentv to form sleeve-like extremities 15-for hnging or flexibly connecting the plates 11 to each other. The outermost or end plates 11 of the slide or runner C are formed with suitable loops 16 which provide hand tabs for the adjustment of the slide or runner in the opening or closing of the gap between the parts b and 0 of the garment. The keepers B and the runner or slide C are preferably Patr-,umanita 16,1317..
be sewed or attached to the respective edges a and b of the garment. The covering on the slide or runner C permits the user to surface the covering with suitable cloth to match the cloth of the garment. The keepers B at opposite ends are formed with tabs 18 which serve as hand holds for the operator of the slide or runner C, as will be obvious.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and manner of use of the herein described fastener will be readily apparent and, therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
Having thus described my invention7 I claim:
A fastener of the character described comprising 'a plurality of keepers, each formed from a single piece of material bent to provide outer and inner plates and a socket extension which protrudes inwardly, the plates being bulged at opposite sides of the socket for accommodating the same, al-
ternate outer plates being formed with slots,
tongues formed on the remaining outer connecting the same, a slide runner including a series of plates, each formed. with a knob correspondingly shaped to the socket and adapted for slidable engagement there.- in, and extensions on the last named `plates for hinging the same to each other.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
