To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GILES M. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Charles, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Metal Seating, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention, generally speaking, is to produce an improved seating device, herein shown as a chair, which is constructed of sheet metal and which is strong and durable, as well as comfortable and pleasing in appearance.

More specifically the invention relates to the construction of the seat, to a detachable upholstered section fitting interchangeably in the seat or the back, and to the means for fastening the covering material of the upholstered sections.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 a plan view of a chair having an upholstered seat and back. Fig. 3- is an enlarged fragmental plan view of this chair with parts broken away. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Figs. 5 and 6 are fragmental underside views showing the manner of folding the covering material at the corners.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawings, the seat comprises a stationary rim or open frame 40 to which the legs and back are secured, and an upholstered section fitting in said frame and detachably mounted thereon. This stationary frame of the seat comprises four sides which preferably have horizontal inturned flanges 41 at their lower edges, the flanges overlapping at the corners ofthe frame and serving to strengthen the frame. In this form of seat the legs 42 lie at the outer sides of the seat and are suitably secured thereto, as by means of bolts 43.

aThe detachable section of the seat fits within the sides of the stationary frame and rests at its corners upon brackets 44 which fit in the corners of the stationary portion and are rigidly secured in place in any suit able manner. The detachable section may be held in place by any suitable means, that herein shown comprising screws 45 passing upwardly through opemngs in the brackets 44 and threaded into the detachable section.

The back of thechair comprises a stationary riin or open frame 46 which in the present instance has only three sides, the lower side being open and the lower ends of the upright sides fitting against and being rigidly secured to the rear corners of the stationary frame of the seat. The sides of the back frame have inturned flanges like the seat, and inasmuch as the back frame is thinner than the seat, the detachable section of the back may if desired bear against the inturned flanges thereon instead of against brackets like 44 in the seat frame. The detachable back section may be secured in place by screws similar to those of the seat frame.

The seat and the back are preferably made of the same size'so that the detachable upholstered sections thereof may be used either upon the seat or the back of the chair. This detachable feature is very important to the manufacturer, since it enables him to carry in stock a large assortment of detachable sections of different colors, materials, or the like, without the neces sity of carrying a complete chair for each style of upholstery. In filling an order, the style of upholstery desired may be quickly secured to the frame of the chair. Inasmuch as the seat and back are the same size, the number of detachable sections to be carried in stock is minimized, since any section will fit either the seat or the back.

In their preferred form these detachable sections comprise asheet metal base 48, a flexible covering material 49, such as leather, cloth, or other material, and an intermediate layer of suitable filling or padding material 50. At the edges of the base 48 are angularly extending flanges, and the covering material is carriedaround these flanges and is held in place by suitable clips which act to draw the covering material taut and secure it firmly to the base.

As shown in Fig. 4 the flange 51 extends downwardly from the base and is turned upwardly as at 52 at its lower edge, the covering material passing downwardly and thence around said upturned edge to conform to the flange. A suitable number of clips 53 of plate-like form, are then placed with'the lower edge engaging the cloth in the groove formed by the upturned edge 52 of the flange, and the upper edge of the clip abutting against the cloth in the corner formed by the flange and the edge of the base 48. The flange may be bent inwardly beyond a right angle, as shown, in order to securely hold the clip in place. One or any suitable number of these clips may be used at each side of the seat. The flange 51, or more strictly speaking, the cloth beneath said flange, bears against the brackets 44: at the corners of the seat and the screws 45 draw the detachable section tightly against said brackets to rigidly secure the seat section to the frame of the chair.

Figs. 5 and 6 illustrate the manner in which the covering material is folded about the corners. The covering material is preferably notched as at 60 to provide a tongue 61 at each corner of the base 48 and the edges of the material adjacent to said tongue are first folded inwardly about the flange 5.7, the tongue then being folded inwardly over said edges. The clips 59 are then pressed into place to secure the covering material to the base.

While I have herein shown my invention as applied to a chair, it is obvious that oer tain features are applicable also to other seating devices such as divans, davenports, or the like.

. I claim as my invention:

1. A detachable upholstered section for seating devices having, in combination, a sheet metal base having at its edges downturned angular flanges which are turned up at their lower edges, a covering material, the edge portions of which are folded about said flanges and said upturned edges, and clips engaging the covering material in the grooves formed by the upturned edges of the flanges for securing the covering material to the base.

2. A removable section for seating devices having, in combination, a sheet metal base having angular flanges at its edges, a covering-material folded about said flanges, the material being notched adjacent to its corners to provide tongues, and the edge of the material adjacent to each tongue being folded inwardly first, and the tongue being then folded inwardly over said edges, and sheet metal clips engaging the material and itJhe flanges for securing the material to the ase.

3. An upholstered section for seating devices having, in combination, a sheet metal base with downturned angular flanges at its edges, said flanges being turned upwardly and inwardly at their lower edges, a coveringmaterial, the edge portions of which are folded about said flanges and said upturned and inturned edges, and clips engaging the covering material in the grooves formed by the edges of the flanges and in the angle formed by said base and the downwardly projecting flanges.

4. A removable section for seating de vices having, in combination, a sheet metal base having angular flanges at its edges, :1 covering material folded about said flanges, the material being notched adjacent to its corners to provide tongues, and the edge of the material adjacent to each tongue being folded inwardly first, and the tongue being then folded inwardly over said edges, and sheet metal clips engaging the covering material adjacent the edges of the flanges and in the angle formed by the base and the flanges for securing the material to the base.
