Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUNDER O. BnReLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Deerfield, county of Dane, and State of WVisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvements in Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in journal boxes for shafting, and it pertains to that class which are formed of sheet metal.
The object of my invention is to provide a journal box of comparatively inexpensive construction which may be easily and quickly made without the necessity of first making patterns of wood or metal and molds of sand as is required with all cast metal journal boxes. A further object is to so form the journal box that it may be readily supported from the exterior surface of a wooden beam, without cutting away such beam for the reception of the contiguous member of said box, whereby I not only avoid the labor of cutting away such beam, but such beam is much stronger than it would otherwise be when cut away to conform to the convex shape of an ordinary cast metal journal box.
My invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan, and
Fig. 2 is a side view of my journal box, in connection with a supporting beam.
Like parts are referred to by the same reference numerals in both views.
1 represents a shaft. 2 is a beam to which my journal box is secured by the bolts 3, 3. My journal box comprises the two sheet metal members at and 5, both of which are provided with apertures 6 for the reception of said bolts 3. The upper member 4 converges downwardly past the center 7 of said shaft 1, and is preferably provided on its upper side with an oil receiving aperture 8 located centrally above said shaft. The center 9 of the member 5 of said journal box is formed on the same plane as the respective ends 10 of said member, whereby said central member 9 rests upon the beam 2, whereby I am enabled to use sheet metal instead of heavy cast metal for such journal box, and the liability of such lower member 5 bending with the weight or downward pressure of said shaft 1 is avoided. The upper surface of said member 5 is made slightly concave to conform to the contiguous surface of said shaft 1, while the lower or exterior surface of said member 5 is made convex so as to rest, as stated, upon said beam 2. In other words the central portion of said member 5 is made concavo convex, whereby a smooth bearing surface is formed for said shaft which rests thereon between the two upward bends 11, 11 thereof, while the upper member 4 serves to retain said shaft 1 in place upon the concave surface of the lower member 5.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the described class, the combination of a shaft, a sheet metal journal box, the exterior member of which extends past the longitudinal center of said shaft, a second sheet metal member curved slightly at its center forming a trough for the reception of said shaft, a plurality of bolt receiving apertures formed in the respective ends of both members of said journal box, a beam, and a plurality of bolts for securing said journal. box to said beam, the center of the interior member of said journal box being formed on the same plane as its respective ends, whereby said central portion is supported by said beam and the liability of said journal box bending by the pressure of said shaft is avoided.
2. In a device of the described class, the combination of a shaft, a sheet metal journal box, the upper member of which extends past the longitudinal center of said shaft, a second sheet metal member curved upwardly at its center forming a trough for the reception of said shaft, a plurality of bolt receiving apertures formed in the respective ends of both members of said journal box, a beam, and a plurality of bolts for securing said journal box to said beam, the center of the lower member of said journal box being formed on the same plane as its respective ends, whereby said central portion is supported by said beam and the liability of said journal box bending by the pressure of said shaft is avoided.
