Be it known that I, PERCY C. GIBSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVaukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Cover for Traps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to covers for drum traps, and is an improvement upon the invention embodied in the application filed by me March 13, 1916, Serial No. 83,959.
The covers sometimes employed have an internally threaded brass ring soldered in the lead drum near the edge and adjacent the opening thereof, with which ring a threaded cover engages. Diiliculty, however, has been experienced with these constructions because the threads of the cover and ring often stick together, due to the freezing of'the drum, whereby when the cover is rotated to remove the same from the soldered ring, the latter is twisted and torn from the trap, seriously damaging the latter.
An object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the threaded connections above mentioned are eliminated, and in which access may be had to the trap without danger of tearing or damaging the same.
Another object of the invention is to simplify and reduce the number of parts of such constructions without decreasing their efiiciency or usefulness, and thereby materially reduce the cost of the same. 7
In particular the invention resides in providing a radial arm which is removably attached either to the interior of the trap adjacent the edge thereof, or to a ring which in turn is fixed to the contiguous portion of the trap, said arm having removably fastened thereto a cover plate.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a construction embodying one form of my invention and applicable to traps of lead.

Referring to Figs. 1 to 5 of the drawings, I have there shown a ring member 1 of any suitable material such as brass ormalleable iron, which is adapted to be attached within the open end of the trap. t is immaterial how this ring member is attached, but soldering has been found very suitable for this purpose. The ring at one side is provided with a pair of inwardly projecting ears 2 to which a diametrically extending or radial arm 8 is pivoted by means of the lug 1 depending from one end thereof. The upper portion of the opposite end of the arm is provided with a recess 5, into which fits the lug 6, which projects inwardly from the inner periphery of the ring at a point opposite the ears. The lug 6 and recessed end of the arm are provided with alined screwthreaded openings 7, in which is located a. screw 8 for holding the arm in horizontal position. It should be noticed in this connection that the upper or outer surface of the arm is substantially in alinement with the upper or outer edge of the ring when fastened, as clearly shown in Fig. l. The arm is preferably pivoted to the ears 2 by means of a cotter pin 9, whereby it can be detached and removed from the trap, if so desired.
Projecting upwardly or outwardly from the central portion of the arm, and above the plane thereof, is a cylindrical stud, shank, or bolt 10 having a screw-threaded periphery, see Fig. 1. Mounted above the arm 3 and encircling the stud 10 is a'circular gasket 11 preferably of fiber having a central circular opening 12 to receive the stud and covering the space between the arm and ring member. A cover plate 13 is located above the gasket and is provided with a rectangular central opening 14 receiving the cylindrical Stud 10.
The upper or outer edge of the ring member 1 is provided with an annular groove 15. Upon the under side of the cover plate is an annular rib 16 adapted to fit within the annular groove of the ring member 1, whereby a tight joint is secured. The plate, gasket, and ring member are securely clamped together by means of the cap nut 17 located above the cover plate and adjustable upon the stud 10. The construction above described is especially applicable to traps con structed of lead, wherein a reinforcing or supporting member, such as the ring member 1, is necessary to support and carry the cover plate.
In Figs. 6 to 9, I have illustrated a modified form in which the upper or outer edge of the trap is indicated at 1 This trap may be formed of any suitable material, such as malleable iron, lead, or the like. In this form, the special ring member, as disclosed in Fig. 1 is not necessary. On the inside of the trap and slightly below the upper or outer edge thereof, there is provided a loop 2, to which is pivoted the radial arm 3 by means of a. depending hook 4 inclosing the loop and attached to the arm at one end thereof. This manner of pivoting the arm may also be substituted for the cotter pinof the construction shown in Fig. 1. The end of the arm remote from the loop is provided with a recess 5 similar to that of Fig. 1, while the inner periphery of the trap adjacent the upper or outer edge thereof is provided with an inwardly projecting lug 6 The recessed end of the. arm'is fastened to the lug by means of a screw 7*, as in the form first described. The upper or outer surface of the arm in this last form is also in alinement with the edge of the trap, see Fig. 6.
In the construction of Fig. 6, I have shown a slightly modified means for attaching the cover to the radial arm. This means is also applicable to the construction shown in Fig. 1.
Instead of providing a cylindrical stud upon the cross arm, as in the form above described, the cross arm is here provided with a screw-threaded opening 10. Located above the upper or outer edge of the trap and the arm 3, is a gasket 11- like the one above described, and above this gasket is mounted the cover plate 12. This plate is provided with a central downwardly extending threaded bolt 13" integral therewith, which fits into the screw-threaded opening of the radial arm. An angular recess or core 14 is provided in the top of the plate at the center thereof, see Fig. 8, whereby the plate and bolt may be rotated by inserting, av tool therein, to clamp the plate against the arm with the gasket therebetween.
Instead of making the depending bolt 13 integral with the plate, it may be made separate therefrom, as shown at 13 in Fig. 10. In themodified construction of Fig. 6, the upper or outer edge of the trap is also provided with an annular groove 15. The cover plate is provided with an annular rib 16 fitting within the groove 15 of'the trap to provide a tight joint. In the constructions of both F igs. 1 and 6, it should be noticed that the. gaskets do not extend be yond the edge of the traps but that the plates do. 7 r If so desired, packing may be inserted between the annularrib and the annular groove to improve the tightness of the joint. For this purpose the outer edge of the gasket may be composed of soft material which extends between the rib and groove, as
shown in Fig. 11. Atight joint is thus insured at all times between the cover plate and the remaining parts of the construction.
Access be easily had to the interior of the trapfwithout danger of tearing out the upper portions thereof, by unscrewing the small central bolt or nut and removing the cover plate. After the cover plate is removed, the radial arm may be easily let down out of the way by removing the screw at one end thereof. If so desired, the arm may be bodily removed by pulling out the cotter pin from the hinge.
lVhile I have shown and described one embodiment of my invention, with modified forms thereof, it is to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, for other obvious modifications will be apparent to anyone skilled in the art;
By the term annular member in the claims, I wish it to be understood as comprehending either the trap itself or a separate part attached to the interior of'the trap. I
What is claimed is;-
1. The combination with an annular member, a'cover plate, a radial arm pivotally connected at one end to the interior of said member beneath said cover plate, means for removably connecting the opposite end of said arm to saidmember so as to maintain it in rigid position, and a clamping connection between said cover plate and said arm, whereby when said clamping connection is disconnected the cover plate may be removed leaving the radial arm in locked position and .then upon disconnecting the said removable means the said arm'may be moved around its pivot out of the way to permit access to the trap. p v
2. The combination with an annular mem ber, of an arm extending diametrically of said member and hinged at one end to the inner periphery of the same, the opposite end of said arm being detachably connected to the inner periphery of said member at 136 a point diametrically opposite the hinge, a gasket supported on said member and arm, a cover plate over said gasket, and means for clamping said cover plate, gasket and arm together.
3. In a device of the character described, an annular member, a radial arm pivotally connected to said member and located in substantially the same horizontal plane as the upper edge of the same, a gasket placed upon said member and arm and closing over the space between said member and said arm, acover plate fitted upon thegasket, and connecting means between the arm and the member and said cover plate and around which connecting means the gasket is fitted, said connecting means serving to hold the parts in rigid relation with the gasket clamped between the member and plate.
4:- The combination with an annular member, a radial arm hinged at one end to the inner periphery thereof and having its opposite end detachably connected to the diametrically opposite portion of said periphery, a cover plate above said arm, means for clamping the central portion of said cover plate to the central portion or said arm, a gasket interposed between said cover plate and said arm and resting at its periphery upon the said member, and an interlocking annular groove and rib upon the inner side of the cover plate and outer edge of the annular member.
5. The combination with an annular member, a radial arm hinged at one end to the inner periphery of said member and having its opposite end recessed, a lug projecting inwardly from the inner periphery of said member at the side thereof opposite said hinge and lying in said recessed portion of said end, means for fastening said lug and arm together, said arm and said lug lying in substantially the same horizontal plane With the outer edge of said member, a gasket lying above and covering the space between said member and arm, a cover plate above said gasket, screw-threaded means between the central portion of said plate and arm for clamping the same together with the gasket therebetween, and an interlocking annular groove and rib for forming a tight joint between said plate and ring member outside the periphery of the gasket.
