To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT Inonnsn, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Geometric l/Vood-(arvers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a geometric wood carving machine whereby surfaces of wood may be carved in conformity with a desired pattern.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a geometric or pantographic type of machine wherein the carving tool or tools are capable of being guided to perform fine .and intricate work along various geometric outlines and with portions raised or depressed as occasion requires.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine which may be varied to operate in accordance with reversed patterns in which the working parts are balanced for sensitive working instruments, and in which duplicate objects may be simultaneously carved from the same pattern.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view showing the application of the invention to an instrument for-simultaneously producing two duplicate carvings from a single pattern;

Referring now more partici'llarly to Figs. 1 to 1, inclusive, of the drawings, 1 designates a suitable supporting table, shown in the present instance as provided with a pair of superposed tops or working surfaces 2 and 3 connected by corner posts l, the said table being mounted upon supporting legs 5.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Carried by the table surface 2 is a bracket extension (3 provided with a socket 7 in which is fixedly mounted the lower end of a main column or post 8. Mounted upon the column or post 8 is a pair of superposed horizontal bars. The upper bar includes arms 9 and 11 and the lower bar includes arms 10 and 12, arms 9, and 10 being connected by rod 13 and arms 11 and 12 by rod 14.. As shown, the arms 11 and 12 are provided with longitudinally extending slots 15, while the rod 13 is provided with an upward extension 16 carrying one or more eountcrweights 17 to assist in balancing the weight of the arms 1.1 and 12.
The slotted arms 11 and 12 are arranged for cooperation with a pair of superposed arms 18 and 19 disposed normally in parallel relation therewith and connected at their extremities by rods 20 and 21, said arms 18 and 19 being formed with longitudinal slots 22. The rod 20 has a downward extension 23 to receive a holder 2-1 carrying a scriber or pointer 25 and provided with an operating handle 26 the said scriber 25 being properly arranged for movement over a desired pattern (not shown) supported upon the table surface 2. Slidably adjustable in the slots 15 of the arms 11 and 12 a vertically disposed pivot rod or post 27 and slidably mounted in the slots 22 ot the arms 18 and 1.9 is a pivot rod or post 28. The post 27 passes through and is slidably engaged with longitudinal slots 29 in a third pair 01 superposed arms 30 which extend at an angle across and between the arms 11 and 12 and are connected at their rear ends by a rod 31 and pivotally coupled'at their forward ends to a rod 20, while the post 28 passes through and slidably engages longitudinal slots 32 in a fourth pair of superposed arms 33 which are connected at their rear ends by a rod or post 3 1- and at their forward ends by a rod or post 35, the said arms 33 being also pivotally connected to the rear ends of the main arms 11 and 12 by the rod or post l t which passes through the rear ends of the sets of arms which are in lapping engagement and is journaled for rotation in the arms to form a bearing axle.
Mounted upon the upper end of the main column or post 8 is a swiveled yoke 36 in which is pivotally mounted a balancing lever 37 carrying at one end an adjustable balancing weight 38 and provided at its opposite end with a hook 239 from which dcpends a chain or like connection 40 which is attached to theupper main arm 11 the said yoke being adapted to turn or oscillate about the central post 8 as an axis, while the lever is adapted to have pivotal motion during the vertical movement of the arms. The main arms 11 and 12 are fitted to turn or oscillate and to slide vertically upon the main post 8. As the main arms 11 and 12 carry all the other arms and the working parts of the machine, as hereinafter described it will be understood that the lever 37 counterbalances the weight of the work ing parts and is adapted for oscillatory motion therewith and to maintain the main arms and working parts carried thereby at any elevation to which they may be adjusted, while at the same time permitting free and easy vertical motion thereof.
In the type of double machine shown in Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, a pair of carving tools is mounted for conjoint operation to simultaneously vout or carve wood or the like disposed respectively upon the table surfaces 2 and 3. As shown, one of these carving tools 40 is mounted upon a depending extension from the lower end of the rod 35, while a second carving tool 41 is mounted upon a stub shaft 42 for movement with the tool '40 and arranged above the table surface 3. The shaft 42 is journaled upon a supporting bar 43 carried by the rod 34 and in which the upper end of the rod or shaft 14 is journaled, the said upper end of the rod or shaft 14 carryinga pulley 44 con nected by a drive belt 45 with a pulley 46 on the shaft 42, whereby said shaft is driven. The tool 40 is carried by a chuck46 mounted to be rotated by a pulley 47 fitted upon the lower end of rod 35, and this pulley is con.- nected by a drive belt 48 with one portion of a double pulley 49 on the lower end of rod or shaft 14, the other portion of which pulley 49 is connected by a belt 50 with one portion of a double pulley 51 on the main post or column 8. The free portion of pulley 51 is connected by a drive belt 52 with a main drive belt 53 on the bracket 6, or the extension of the latter. Belt 53 may be driven from any suitable source of power.
It will be observed that the rods 14 and 34 are disposed in rear of the table surfaces 2 and 3, and are mounted to swing'horizontally and slide vertically upon the main. column or post 8 which is disposed beyond one end of the table, while the sets of work ing arms 33 extend between the table sur faces and the bar 43 is positioned over the upper table surface, thus disposing the pointer or scriber 25 and the carving tools 40 and 41 in position for use. It will be apparent that when the scriber 25 is moved over the surface of the pattern on the table top 2 the arms 30 will be operated as actuating elements to transmit motion through multiplying levers to increase the ratio of movement of the carving tools with respect to the movement of the scriber according to the desired difference in area between the pattern and the object to be carved, and that in the operation of the device the system of arms or levers, in addition to their motions in a horizontal plane, may also be moved vertically in proportion to elevations or depressions in the pattern to produce corresponding cameo or intaglio surfaces in the work. 'By constructing and arranging the levers for a pantographic action a wide variation of motion for producing intricate work is insured, and it will be understood that by the adjustment afforded by the slotted engagement of the arms with the posts or rods 27 and 28 the pivotal axes of the arms or levers may be varied to vary the ranges of motion of the scribers and carving tools accordingly. i
In the form of my invention shown in Fig 5, which discloses a machine for pro ducmg single carvings, the construction is essentially the same as that previously described, with the exception of the omission 7 ply as a pivot rod, in which event the pulley 49 may be loosely mounted thereon.
As shown in Fig. 6, by simply reversing the positions of the scriber 25' and carving tool 40, the depending ends of the rods 20 ed for producing a carving in reverse pro portion from the same duplicate as with the arrangement of the parts 25 and 40 shown With this modified and 35 being adapted to interchangeably re- 7. ceive the same, the apparatus will be adapt-' in the preceding views, thus making it possible to produce a carving, on a larger or 1 smaller scale, with reference to the original.
Having described the invention, what I claim is; 1. Ina device of the'class described,.a
supporting device, a vertical column rigidly mounted thereon, a frame pivotally mounted on the column and comprising upper and lower slotted arms, a rod connecting certain] of the ends of the arms, a. second rod con necting the opposite ends. ofthe arms and extending above the upper slotted arm,a second frame parallel with that first named and pivotally connected therewith, means for mounting the second frame for movement about a central axis, a third frame including a plurality of slotted arms pivotally connected with the arms first named and with the second frame, an engraving tool carried by the third frame, a guiding tool carried at the end of the second frame, an upper arm carried by the third frame and extending longitudinally thereof, and an engraving tool carried by the upper arm and in substantial alinement with the engraving tool first named.
2. In a device of the class described, a supporting device, a column rigidly mounted thereon, a frame pivotally mounted on the column, means for counter-balancing the frame, said frame including upper and lower slotted arms, a rod connecting certain of the ends of the arms and extending above the upper arm, a frame mounted parallelly with reference to the frame first named and having pivotal movement corresponding with the movement of the frame first named, a third frame connected with saidrod form ing a part of the first frame and rigidly connected with the central portion of the second frame, an engraving tool mounted at one end of the third frame, said third frame including an upper longitudinal bar, an en graving tool carried at one end of the upper bar and in substantial alinement with the tool first named, means for imparting rotation to the engraving tools, and a guiding tool carried by the second f 'ame.
In a device of the class described, a supporting column, a frame pivotally mounted with reference thereto, a second frame operating with the first frame, a third frame connected with the first and second frames and controlled thereby, said third frame carrying a plurality of engraving tools one of which is located above the frame proper and in substantial alinement with the other of said tools, and work supporting devices mounted below said tools.
