Be it known that I, FREDERICK JOHN SmLLoooK, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at Newtown Row, Birmingham, in the county of Warwick, En ;la11d, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots for Foot-Ball and other Athletic Purposes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to boots for use in playing football, and is applicable to boots for use in the case of other athletic purposes, in connection with which boots instep or ankle straps are used for assisting to retain the boot tightly upon the foot, the present improvements (Dilnprisin'g side extensions cut out in one with the leather which forms the sole, heel or both of the boot, and which extensions form the means by which the sole, heel or both is more completely secured by strappings above the instep, and if desired around the ankle, thus effecting a more substantial and secure connectionof the waist of the sole to the foot than was previously the case when the ends of the instep or ankle straps were secured between the waist of the sole and the uppers, in which arrangement the strain of the pull of the strap was in a direction practically transverse to that part of the strap which was secured between the sole and the upper, whereas by the present improvements, the pull or strain of that part of any strap which may be attached to the sole extension is in a longitudinal direction to the strap joint and transverse to the threads, rivets, or eyelets by which the strap is connected to the side extensions.

Such sole extensions upon the tightening up of the instep or ankle straps facilitate the pulling up of the waist of the sole into the ollow under the instep of the foot, and at the same time form substantial rotection at each side of that part of the cot below the instep.

In order that this invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into practice, reference may be had to the appended two sheets of explanatory drawings, upon which:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of the left hand side of a right shoe having combined instep and ankle straps in accordance with these improvements.

'Fig. 2 is a reverse side elevation of the shoe illustrated in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an elevation of a shoe having instep straps in accordance with these improvements.

Fig. 4 is an inverted plan of either of the shoes illustrated by Figs. 1 and 3,-but before attachment of the non-slipping projections to the sole and heel. f

In carrying this invention into efi'ect the leather for the sole a is cut with suitable extensions a ,a which are thus in one with the leather of the sole and heel a, such extensions a and a being arranged at or near the waist of the sole.

In the. case of the combined instep and ankle strap 6, the one end of the strap is attached to the extension a by sewing, riveting, eyeleting, or other suitable means, the other end 6 of the strap being provided with an eyelet or eyelets for enabling the strap to be tightly laced to the extension a in which extension suitable eyeletor eyelets a is or are provided for this purpose.

In the case of boots in which only instep straps are required, one end of a length of strap such as b, Fig. 3, may be attached to the extensions a and a on each side of the boot by sewing, riveting, eyeleting, or other suitable means, the other or upper end of such straps being provided with an eyeletv or eyelets, by which the straps can be tightly drawn together above the instep by a suitable lace, or in some cases the straps b or b may be dispensed with, and both the extensions a be provided with an eyelet or eyelets whereby with the use of suitable broad lacings engaging with such eyelet and passing over the instep and around the ankle if so desired, the sole of the boot at the waist can be tightly drawn up and retained on the foot.

In place of the eyelets, other means such as buckle attachments may be used for enabling the straps or extensions to'be tightly drawn up over the instep around the ankle. 3 What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A shoe comprising a sole, a heel, side extensions cut out in one with the leather which forms said sole or heel or both, and securing means, said extension being adapted to form means for additionally securing the sole, heel or both to the foot by means of said securing means being secured to the extension.

2. A shoe comprising a sole, a heel, side extensions cut out in one with the leather which forms said sole or heel or both, securing means, such securing means comprising a pair of straps, the one end of each of which is respectively secured to the extensions by sewing, riveting, eyeleting, or the like, and attaching means secured to the other ends of said straps for enabling the strapsto be tightly drawn up or laced over the inste i? A shoe comprising a sole, a heel, side extensions cut out in one with the leather which forms said sole or heel or both, securing means comprising straps, one of which is of suflicient length to pass over the instep and around the ankle and being adapted to be secured to the extension on one side of the shoe, and attaching means secured to the shoe,'and means secured to the extensions whereby they may be drawn toward each other by suitable means passing over the instep and if desired, around the ankle.
