Be it known that I, FRED A. READ, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Lynn, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts,,have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Needle-Carriers for Buttonhole- Machines and the like, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to sewing machines and particularly to the needle carrier thereof, the object of the invention being to provide a means whereby the needle may be adjusted bodily relatively to the axis of the needle bar, thereby varying the depth of the stitch. 1
Another object of the invention is the provision of means on the needle carrierfor creating a tension on the needle thread and adapted to always retain its position relativelyto said needle during the lateral ad justment of the latter. 1 i j j H The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully understood by referenceto the description of the drawings and .to the claims hereinafter given. a
For the purpose of illustrating the invention one preferredform thereof is illustrated in the drawings, this form having been found to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which the invention consists can be variously arranged and organized, and that the invention is not limited to the precisearrangement and organlzatlon of these instrurnentalitles as herein shown and described.

j The plate31 isprovided with a depression ,35 into which extends a registering projection 36. Against the outer face of the plate 34 bears the washer 36 surrounding the stud 29, said washer being forced against said plate 34 by means of a spring 37 interposed between said washer and the head 30.
The plates 31-34 form a suitable tension device through which the supply of thread may pass from the discharge orifice 12 to the groove 23 in the needle 22 and thence to the eye 38 in said needle.
The head 17 of the eccentric 16 is provided with a projection 39 by which said eccentric may be turned about the axis of the shank 13 when the clamping screw 1920 has been loosened.
By turning the eccentric 16 about the axis of said shank 13 the needle 22 may be moved relatively to the axis of said shank and the depth of the stitch varied as desired.
Bymounting the tension device upon the needle block, the thread will always be in alinement with the groove 23 regardless of 'the position of the needle relatively to the axis of the needle bar.
While in the drawings the needle 22 is shown parallel with the needle bar 10 it is true that said needle may be mounted in the block 15 at an inclination to the axis of said bar and the position of said needle may be' changed toward and from said shank 13 without changing its inclination.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar, an adjusting eccentric surrounding a part of said bar and capable of being turned from without, means for securing said eccentric when adjusted, a needle carrier surrounding said eccentric, and inter-engaging projections formed respectively on the bar and carrier for determining the circumferential position of the carrier.
2. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar, an adjusting eccentric surrounding a part of said bar and capable f being turned from without, means for securing said eccentric when adjusted, a needle carrier surrounding said ee centric, and a radially arranged guide on the bar and engaged by the carrier for determining the circumferential position of the carrier.
3. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar, having a shoulder substantially above its lower end, an adjusting eccentric surrounding a part of said bar in contactwith said shoulder and capable of being'turned from without, a "needle carrier surrounding said eccentric, and a securing screw at the bar lower end cooperating with said shoulder for clamping said eccentric in adjusted position.
4. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar, having a shoulder substantially above its lower end, an adj 11sting eccentric surrounding a part of said bar and capable of being turned from without,
means for securing said eccentric when adjusted, a needle carrier surrounding said eccentric, a securing screw at the bar lower end for clamping said eccentric in adjusted position, and a radially arranged guide 011 the bar and engaged by the carrier for determining the circumferential position of the carrier.
5. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar having a shoulder substantially above its lower end, an adjusting eccentric surrounding a part of said bar, below said bar shoulder and having a shoulder near its lower end, means for securing said eccentric when adjusted, a needle carrier surrounding said eccentric and confined between said two shoulders, and means for determining the circumferential position of the carrier.
6. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar, an adjusting eccentric surrounding a part of said bar, means for securing said eccentric when adjusted, a needle carrier surrounding said eccentric and adapted to hold a needle in longitudinal position, means, such as 14, 21, on the bar and carrier for determining the circumferential position of the carrier, and a thread tension device located in suitable relation to the needle, and mounted on the needle carrier, whereby the operation of said eccentric will simultaneously and equally adjust both the needle and tension toward and from the needle bar.
7. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar, a needle carrier adapted to hold a grooved needle, a thread guiding tension device adapted to deliver thread in line with the needle groove, and means for simultaneously and equally adjusting both said needle and tension transversely toward and from the needle bar.
8. In combination with a longitudinally reciprocable needle bar. a needle carrier device adapted to hold a needle longitudinally to the bar, a thread tension device located in suitable relation to the needle, both said devices mounted on the needle bar, means fOr adjusting the position f the tension device transversely of the nedle bar, and means for securing the tension device in its adjusted position.
