' IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent'No. 129,541, dated July 16, 1872.
-Media, Delaware county, Pennsylvania.
Improved Toba cco- Cutter.
My invention consists of a tobacco-cutterin which a lever carrying the knife, a connectin glink, and an operating-lever are combined in the mannerfully described hereafter, the whole forming a most ett'cctive cutter of simple and economical construction.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure l is a side view of my improved tobacco-cutter, and Fig. 2 the same, with the operating parts in a different position.
A represents the base or cutting bed of the implement, to which, at points adjacent to its opposite ends, are secured two standards, a and b, the former being of less height than the latter. The knife B is arranged as close as possible to the standard a, and is secured to or forms part of a lever, D, which has its fulcrum at apoint, 0, on the said standard. This lever is connected at itsouter end by a link, F, to an operating-lever, H, which has its fulcrum at a point, 0?, on the standard b, the connection being made at a point comparatively close to the said fulcrum in order to obtain as great a leverage as possible upon the blade. The operating-lever is provided at its outer end with a suitable handle, 0, and it is made of such length that when lowered it shall extend over and beyond the fulcrum of the cutting-lever D. An increased leverage is obtained by thus lengthening the operating-lever, and it can also be grasped and manipulated more readily and to greater advantage than if it terminated at a point directly over the cutter.
By raising and lowering the operating-lever the cuttin g'blade B will also be raised and lowered to a slight extent, and it will be readily understood how, through the medium of the compound leverage described, a comparatively light downward pressure upon the handle of the said operating-lever will be sufficient to cause the blade to pass through and sever the toughest and hardest pieces of plug tobacco.
I claim as my invention A tobacco-cutter in which a lever, D, carrying the knife, a connecting-link, F, and operating-lever H are combined, substantially in the manner described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
