NUMBER-PLATE. FRAME.
Application filed December 27, 1920.
This invention relates to improvements in number-plate frames for motor vehicles; and the object of this invention is to provide a metal frame of this character for stiffening the usual sheet metal number plate and to support it firmly in operative position when mounted on a vehicle.
lVit-h these and other objects in view, the
invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure l is a front view illustrating the general appearance of my improved number-plate frame with a number plate mounted therein.
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation on line 22 of Figure 1, illustrating the number plate as mounted in a frame, the latter secured in position on the supporting bracket.
Figure 3 is an enlarged view showing a portion of the number plate.
Figure at is a section on line il of Figure 3. showing the general shape of the frame in section.
Figure 5 is a section on line 55 of Figure 2-), illustrating the inwardly-extending tab and the enlarged bearing surface provided by the tab for the support of the thin number plate also as a convenient means in which the plate may be secured to the supporting bracket.
lVith reference to the drawingsll) desig- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 1922.
Serial No. 433,342.
The inwardly extending or front edge of the frame provides a suitable support as at 14 against which the outer marginal surface of the plate 15 rests.
The rearwardly extending lip or flange 13 provides a recess of sufficient depth to not only receive and protect the marginal edges of the number plate but also to receive and house the nuts 16 which are secured to the inner ends of the binding bolts 17.
In order to reinforce and stiffen this frame, I have formed inwardly-extending corner sections 18, the lower corners 18 of which are adapted to provide enlarged portions through which the securing bolts 17 maybe passed without weakening the frame.
I have also provided on the upper mem ber of the frame two downwardly extending pads or cars 20 which perform two functions; first, they provide an extended area for suitably supporting the upper edge portion of the number plate; and second, they provide enlarged or stiffening members through which the bolts 21 may be passed through the number plate and also through frame and its plate in position on a vehicle.
'hIy improved number plate is extremely simple and practical in construction and by its use the thin sheet metal number plate may be firmly supported in proper position to withstand the racking and jarring of the rapidly running vehicle; and also by its use the plate may be firmly secured to a vehiclebracket to be supported in the desired position thereon. Then again by the use of my improved number plate frame the looks of the plate are much improved rendering the whole handsome and attractive in appearance.
The foregoing description is directed solely towards the construction illustrated, but I desire it to be understood that I reserve the privilege of resorting to all the mechanical changes to which the device is susceptible, the invention being defined and limited only by the terms of the appended claim.
I claim:
A number-plate frame for motor vehicles, comprising a rectangular frame having its front face oval in cross section and its rear face recessed to a substantial depth to receive and cover both the marginal edges of the bracket member 22 for securing the the number plate and the binding nuts therefer, the upper bar of said frame also having a pair of spaced apart inwardly-projecting tabs providing an extended bearing 5 surface for the plate and also providing stifiened members through which the frame may be secured to a pair of supporting brackets, said frame also having reinforcing corner portions adapted to also receive the plate-receiving bolts. 7 10 In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
