BATHTUB.
Application filed June 25,1919, Serial No. 806,759. Renewed May 11, 1922. Serial 1T0. 590,248.
ful Improvements in Bathtubs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to stationary bath tubs such as are connected with a source of 'water supply, and my object is to devise means whereby the water supply is led to the bath at a plurality of points along its length. With such an arrangement it is possible to obtain a spray or sheet of water towash off the sides and bottom of the bath, or, if desired, a needle bath eflt'ect may be obtained.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 is a plan View, partly broken away, of a bath tubprovided with my improvements;
Fig. 2 a cross section of the same looking towards the water connection end;
Fig. 3 a horizontalcross section showing a preferred arrangement of the water connections;
Fig. 4 an enlarged cross section through the'rim of the tub showing the preferred arrangement;
Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are cross sectional details showing various modifications of the construction of the water channel of the tub; and
Fig. 8 a sectional detail of the water controlling cock.
In the drawings like numerals of refer- .ence indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
1 is a bath tub, which in the main is of ordinary construction, and is provided with the hot and cold water connections 2 and 3.
In the preferred arrangement a pipe 4 formin Fig. 5 from the rim of the bath tub, but I prefer to support the pipe on a slight ledge 6 formed round the upper edge of the walls of the bath tub. This ledge supports the pipe 'in such a way that perforations may be formed in the under side of the pipe which will direct'jets of water. down the sides ofthe bath. Certain of the jets may be directed dlagonally inwards to give a needle bath effect if desired, or all the jets formed by the perforations in the pipe may be 'so directed if it is not desired particularly to use my arrangement for cleansing or rinsing the sides of the bath tub after the latter has been used.
In case the arrangement of the pipe forming the water channelis as shown in Fig. 2, it is preferable to omit the ordinary outwardly curled rim of the bath tub and employ instead a separate concavo-convex rim 7 The walls of the bath tub terminate without the usual rim, and the rim 7 sets on the edges as shown. If desired, for extra security, screws 8 may be employed to' secure the rim to the walls of the bath tub. This rim gives the preferable rounded finish to the walls of the bath tub and completely conceals the pipe 4, while sufficient space is left between the inner edge of the cap and of the water channel-is shown in Fig. 6. In
this case the bath tub is formed with a hollow wall 9 from which jet openings 10 .extend to discharge inwardly and downwardly into the bath tub.
A different arrangement is shown in Fig. 7 a water channel 11 being formed of a U- shaped pipe welded or otherwise secured to the outside of the wall of the bath tub, jet
The exact arrangement of the connections for the water supply to .the pipe 4 or its equivalent are not material, though it is preferable to arrange them with as few taps as possible and so that the bath tub can be filled in the ordinary way if desired. In each case, it is essential that either hot or cold water or both mixed can be discharged in the usual way or through the pipe 4. a
Referring particularly to Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 8, I showthe preferred arrangement of the water connections between the pipe 4 and the ordinary water connections 2 and 3 of the bath tub. llhe hot and cold water pipes 2 and 3 communicate with the usual fitting 13 with a common channel 14:, which channelis controlled by the cook 15 which hasva transverse waterway lt formed therein, and a waterway 17 extending from the transverse waterway through one side of thecock plug. lnthe casing of the cook 15 is the hot water port18, the cold water port 19, the discharge port 20 to the nozzle 21, and the discharge port 22 to theconnection 23 leading to the pipe 4. When the handle 24 of the cock is turned straight down, both hot and cold water flow to the nozzle 21. 'When the cock handle is turned up, both hot and cold water will flow to the pipe 4:. It will be noted that l the ports 18, 19, 20 and 21 are wider than the transverse waterway 16 through the plug so that if the cock handle be turned up .and slightly to the right, cold water alone will flow to the pipe 4. If it be turned up and slightly to the left, hot water alone will flow to the pipe 4 and by turning the cock handle a little way to one side or the other of the directly down position, either hot or cold -water alone may be discharged to the nozzle 21. 3
' llhe bath tub constructed as l have scribed has numerous advantages. llhe water may be introduced simultaneously at a number of points along the whole length of the bath tub, so that under any conditions the temperature of the water at each end of the bath tub will be the same. A spray of water down the sides, of the bath tub is easily obtainable to rinsethe same and the effect. of a needle bath readily obtainable by the use of diagonally directed jet openingsin the'pipe 4: or the equivalent water chan nels hereinbefore described.
What. ll claim as my invention is A bath tub having a water channel extending along each side provided with downwardly directed openings withinuthe tub;
hot and cold water-connections communicating with a common channel and provided with a nozzle leading from one side of the channel; a connection with the perforated
