IMPROVEMENT IN EXHAUST-TRAPS FOR STEAM-PIPES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,125, dated August 18, 1874; application Sled April 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SAMUEL CONROW, engineer, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Exhaust-Traps for Steam-Pipes 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description Of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this speciiicatiou, in Whichv Figure l shows the construction and operation of the exhaust-trap.
My invention relates to the construction oi' traps to condense the steam from exhaustpipes, and after its condensation to carry the water Off to a suitable place, and so save the damage to roofs and the annoyance to persons resulting from the condensation of Waste steam in the open air. Various plans to effect this have been used, but none so simple and effectual as the one herein described.
A is the exhaust-pipe. B is a cap placed over the top of the same. O is a drum having a flange, D, flaring inwardly. E is a leader-pipe. The exhaust steam on coming out of the pipe strikes the cap, spreads out tO the sides of the drum, is held in check by the flaring top, and falls in the shape of Water on the bottom of the drum and passes orf through the leader. The course which the steam is forced to take, and the quantity of air circulating in the drum, combine to eiiectually produce the condensation of the steam Within the drum. The whiiis of steam escaping through the space between the flaring top ofthe drum and the cap, receive complete condensation On striking the Open air, and fall Within the circle to the bottom of the drum. That which does get away is so light and vapory as to make no impression Von surrounding objects. The Operation is noiseless and eiiectual. Practical use of this exhaust-trap has established these facts.
The trap is made of sheet or cast metal, Or a combination of both, and the parts put together in an ordinary mechanical manner.

In an exhaust-trap, the open-end drum C, havingaaring flange, I), and 1eaderpipe E, in combination with the pipe A, and cap B, substantially as described, and for the purpose specied.
