To all whom it may concern:

\ Be it known that I, GEORGE F. GAVARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to advertising devices and has for its object to provide an advertising device of simple, practicable and inexpensive form of construction for successively displaying and automatically turning over each of a gang of display members. An object is to provide an advertising device having a carrier for swinging a gang of advertising or display members partially through a circular orbit and further, to provide 'pneumatic means for quickly throwing the display members in succession, rest, through the remainder of the orbit.

Another object is to provide an advertising device in which there is a rotatively mounted carrier upon which may be detachably connected display members which are with a swinging action along one edge, so that each face of the displa member will be successively displayed. nother object is to provide mechanism play members through a predetermined orbit, and to provide pneumatic means for continuingthe orbital movement of each of the display members, and to provide a single source of power in the ap aratus for operating the pneumatic mechanism and the positive driving mechanism. Other objects and advantages will be .made manifest in the following specification of an embodiment of, the invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a front elevation of a pre ferred embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.

. The' apparatus is shown as including a main or motor shaft. 2, which is here represented as operated by an electric motor M, though any other suitable motor may be employed. The motor shaft is provided with a worm or screw pinion 3, and this engages a worm gear 4, fixed on a shaft 5, provided with a worm pinion 6 and engaging a worm gear 7. The ear 7 is secured on an up wardly extending carrier shaft 8, havingtop and bottom bearings 9 and 10, which are here shown as provided in the top and bottom walls of a suitable shell orbox 11, in

which the mechanism of the apparatus is encased.

As shown in Figure 2, the box 11 is mounted in an upwardly and rearwardly inclined position, and has a front window frame 12, through which may be exposed at one time a plurality of display members in the form of leaves or sheets 14, of any suitable material, but preferably of a material having a suitable degree of stiffness so as to be self-sustaining. These members may consist of suitably shaped pieces-of flexible material, such as cardboard, upon which may be directly imprinted or mounted the matter to be displayed, here indicated, for instance, as the picture of a motor vehicle P, on one of the members. 4 4

One form of means for connecting the display members 1% is here shown as including a set of substantially parallel pivot pins or pintles 15, dis osed in circular arrangement in top and ottom discs or hubs 16 and 1?, which are perforated tc receive the same, and which are secured to the shaft 8. Below the disc 17 there is a flange hub 18, upon which the lower ends of the pintles 15 rest, thus spacing the leaves or members 14 above the disc 17 to eliminate friction and provide for the ready rotation of 'rearwardly, it will be seen that gravity tends to swing the leaves inwardly or reararound in their orbit by their pintles, durin the rotation of the shaft 8.

leans are provided for engaging the display members 14 as they are positively drawn in the direction of arrow a, Figure 5, up to the front of the window opening and out of the box, and such means provides for the control of the action and period of display time of each of the members. The controlling means in the form shown consists of inwardly projecting fingers or stops 20, which may have threaded shanks 20 extending outwardly from the side walls of the box and receiving thumb nuts 21, rotatively or non-shiftably mounted in bearings 22, secured on the box sides.

The stops or fingers 20 are shown as of flattened form, presenting flat faces toward the oncoming leaves or display members 14, and the fingers are prevented from rotating in any suitable manner, such as by guide prongs 23 secured thereto and playing in apertures 24 provided therefor in the box wall, in which the stop fingers are mounted. During rotation of the carrying mechanism, the display members 14 will be successively brought against the stop fingers and held in the efl'ective, forwardly presented, displaying position until they are released as their edges are drawn past the stop fingers due to the rotation of the carrier device.

In my present invention I provide pneumatic apparatus for -flipping or rapidly throwing 0r swinging the released display members 14 from position 'a outwardly through and across to the other side of the window frame 12. A form of such pneumatic mechanism is shown as including a simple fan 25, which may be arranged in a shell 26 (disposed in the box 14) and which fan 25 is secured on the motor shaft 2 and driven thereby. The fan has an outlet 27 connected to a conduit :28 provided in or along the side wall in which the restraining fingers 20 are mounted. In this case, the conduit'is countersunk in the side wall, and the latter is provided with a discharge aperture 29 in its inner face, and in a position between the restraining fingers 20; the aperture being somewhat elongated, as clearly seen in Figure 4, so that a draught of air of suitable pressure and velocity will be discharged continuously from the outlet aperture substantially directly along the face of the restrained dis lay member 14 engaging the fingers 20. s the restrained member ispulled away from-these fingers, the blast of air catches the swinging edge of the released display member and it is swung, as lndicated by the arrow b, across the front of the box to a. position of rest indicated at c, Figure 5. From the above it will be seen that I have provided an advertising and display apparatus of efficient and reliable action wherein a series of display members are pivotally mounted upon a rotary carrier and that pneumatic means is provided for temporarily accelerating the leaves through a portion of the orbit between two restrained positions.

Further embodiments, modifications and variations may be resorted to within the principle of the invention.

A display and advertising apparatus comprising, in combination, means for swinging a gang of independent display members through an orbit, pneumatic means for temporarily accelerating the orbital movement of the display members, and an instrumentality disposed in the orbital path of the members for momentarily restrainarebrought to an effective displaying position.

2.'A display and advertising apparatus comprising, in combination, means for swinging a gang of independent display members through an orbit, pneumatic means for temporarily acceleratmg the orbital movement of the display members, an instrumentality disposed in the orbital path of the members for momentarily restraining the members as they are-brought to an effective displaying position, and another restraining instrumentality for momentarily supporting the accelerated leaves as they approach the end of the path of their accelerated movement..

3. A display and advertising apparatus comprising, in combination, means for swinging a gang of independent display 4. A display and advertising apparatus comprising, in combination, means carrying and for swinging a gang of display members in an orbital path, and means for temporarily restraining each of the display members in two positions thereof so that each face of each display member will be successively presented while the display members are being carried through theirorbit, and pneumatic means for temporarily accelerating said display members upon being released from one restrained position.

A display and advertising apparatus comprising, in combination, means carrying and for swinging a gang of display members in an orbital path, means for temporarily restraining each of the display members in two positions thereof so that each face of each display member will be successively presented while the display members are being carried through their orbit, and pneumatic means for temporarily accelerating the movement of each of the individual leaves from one of its restrained positions to the other restrained position.

A display and advertising apparatus comprisin in combination, means carrying and for swinging a gang of display members in an orbital path, means for temporarily restraining each of the display members in two positions thereof so that each faceof each display member willbe successively presented while the display members are being carried through their orbit, and means for temporarily accelerating the movement of individual leaves from one of its restrained positions to the other restrained position, said means including pneumatic apparatus for discharging a'blast of air in such manner as to pick up a. display member as it is released by one ofthe restraining means to be swung to the other 8. A display and advertising apparatus comprising, in combination, means carrying and for swinging a gang of display members in an orbital path, means for temporarily restraining each of the display members in two positions thereof so that each face of each display member will be successively presented while the display members are being carried through their orbit, means for temporarily acceleratingthe movement of individual leaves from one of its restrained positions to the other restrained position, .said means including pneumatic apparatus for discharging a blast of air in such manner as to pickup a display member as it is released by one of the restraining means to be swung to the other restraining means, and a pivot means for each display member and uponwhich the said member swings under the action of the orbit, the orbital driving means being disposed in an upwardly extending and in- I clined'position, and said display members being adapted to swing freely under gravitation as released from one of their restrained positions, and means for accelerating said display members between the first displayed position and the second.
