Description

1. H. GoocH, Straw .CI'tt-Qr. No. 15,485. "Patented Aug. 5, 1856.3
UNITED STATES BATENT OFFICE.
J. H. GOOGH, OF OXFORD, NORTH CAROLINA.
sTRAW-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,485, dated August 5, 1856.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. H. GoocH, of Oxford, in the county of Granville and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Straw-Cutters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a horizontal section, Fig. 2, a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3, a rear view of a straw cutter constructed with my improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a support on the knife axle and having the knife axle stationary and the knife revolve, so that the short end of the straw may be supported during the cutting operation and consequently a clean and sure cut produced', as presently described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents a trough or box of the usual construction.
B, is the axle on which the knife heads C, O, are arranged loosely. This axle is fixed stationary and is provided with short vjournals a, a, for the heads C, O, to turn on D, D, are the blades by which the straw is cut; they are arranged on the heads as shown.
F, is a bracket shaped support projecting out horizontally from the axle B, to such a distance as to'nearly touch the rear end of the bottom of the feed trough A, or only leave space sufficient to allow the blades D, D, to pass freely between it and the trough. The support serves for the short end of the straw to rest upon, as shown in red, during the cutting operation, and enables the knife to effect a very clean and sure cut, under all circumstances.
Gr, G, are cogged wheels attached fast to the knife heads, and H, H, are similar wheels, arranged on a revolving shaftY I, which has a crank P on one of its ends. The wheels H take into those G, Gr, and when set in motion by the crank, cause them to give motion to the knife heads.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is,
Providing a support F, on the axle B, and having the axle stationary and the knife revolve on the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
J. H. GOOCH.
