This invention relates to burial caskets and has for its object to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a metallic burial casket possessed of lightness and durability and including a body portion provided with an inner and an outer lid or closure and with means associated with the inner lid or closure for hermetically enclosing a corpse and for -elfectively excluding moisture from the interior of the body portion.

A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a n'ietallic burial casket including an inner transparent closure or lid for the body portion and with means associated with said closure or lid to provide for the interior of the body portion to be absolutely air tight, resulting in the preservation of the corpse.

Further objects of the invention arc to provide in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a metallic casket which is simple in its construction and ar'angement, strong, durable, comparatively light in weight, air tight, waterproof, thoroughly etcient when used, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.

lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.

A burial casket, in accordance with this invention comprises a composite body portion referred to generallyV by the reference character l, an inner lid or closure referred to generally by the reference character 2, and an outer lid or-closure referred to generally by the reference character 3.' The body portion l is formed of an inner and an outer metallic casing arranged in spaced relation and having interposed therebetween a non-metallicinsert. Although the outer lid or closure 3 is formed of one piece of metallic material, yet it is to be understood that the lid or closure 3 can be constructed in a manner similar to that referred to in connection with the body portion l, that is to say the lid or closure 3 can be set up of an inner and an outer metallic section and a non-metallic insert positioned between the sections.

The body portion l comprises an outer metallic section t, an inner metallic section 5, a non-metallic insert 6 interposed between the sides and ends of the sections 4, o and a non-metallic insert 7 interposed between the bottoms of the sections 4, 5. The sections et and 5 each is in the form of a casing of rectangular contour.

rlhe section 4 is of greater height than the section 5. The bottom 8 of the section 4 projects laterally throughout with respect to the bottom 9 of the section 5, see Figure 2.

The side and end walls of the section 4, at the lower part thereof, are oifset as at 10 and said ofl'set portions terminate in the bottom 9 and seated on said bottom 8 and extending from the offset portions 10 is the insert 7, which is co-extensive with the bottom 8. The insert 7 can be formed of any suitable non-metallic material, preferably wood. The inserts 6 are mounted upon the upper face of the insert 7 and said inserts 6 are constructed ofthe same material from which the inserts 7 are formed. The inserts 6 at their upper ends or rather have their top edges `positionedbelow the top edge of the section 4' of the body portion l. i

The top edge ofeach of the inserts 6 is formed with a plurality of spaced pockets 11 of rectangular contour and which open at the inner sides of the insert, see Figure 3.

In a burial casket, a body portion couiprising a metallic outer section in the form of a` casing` a metallic inner section arranged within and spaced from the outer section and in the 'form of a casing, a non-metallic insert positioned between the sides, ends and bottoms ot said sections and ot less height than said outer section, said outer section having its upper part offset, said ol'lset part formed with an inwardly extending angleshaped portion, said inner section having' its top formed with an outwardly directed flange seating on the top of said insert and having said angle-shaped portion seated thereon, and means mounted on said flange and surrounded by said angle-shaped portion to provide an air tight transparent clos ure for said body portion.

A burial casket comprising a body portion termed-ot au inner metallic section, an outer metallic section and a non-nietallic insert positioned between said sections and overlapped by said inner section, said sections having` co-acting means at the top thereoiFI to provide a continuous rabbet, a transparent inner closure mounted in said rabbet, a compressible element interposed between said closure and said inner section, and means anchored to said insert by said inner section'and extendingthrough said element and closure to tixedly secure the latter to the body portion to provide an air tight seal.

5. A bni'ial casket comprising a body portion ilormed o'll an inner metallic section, an outer metallic section and a non-metallic insert positioned between said sections and overlapped b v said inner section, said sections having' co-acting means at the top thereof to provide a continuous rabbet, a transparent inner closure mounted in said rabbet, a con'ipressible element interposed between said closure and said inner section, means anchored to said insert by said inner section and extending through said element and closure to lixedly secure. the latter to the body portion to provide an air tight seal. means for hinging` said closure to the outer section o'l said body portion, an outer closure hinged to said outer section and seating` when in closure position upon said outer section, and means tor securing said outer closure when in closed position to said outer section.
