This invention-relates to sanitary napkins for womens use and a Vprimary object thereof is to provide a napkin of this character with a waterproof filler or inner liner to avoid all danger of soiling the clothing of the wearer and yet provide a device which is comfortable and will not chafe the user.
Another object is to so construct this napkin that while it may be cheaply manufactured, it will afford the protection required of such a garment.
In carrying out these objects, the invention is susceptible of modification without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the claimed invention, there being shown in the drawing for illustrative purposes a preferred and practical lform in which:`
Fig. 1 represents a perspective view of the completed article embodying this invention in the shape in which it is placed on thev market. f
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the outer covering or envelope partially open to disclose the interior construction, the absorbent layers being shown broken away to more clearlygdisclose the inner liner or iillerf Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the completed article. Fi 4 is a transverse section taken on4 the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing a slightly different form of the invention..
Similar reference characters indicate correspogiding parts in all the iigures. y
In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4, the body of the napkin 1 may be composed of any suitable absorbent material such as cotton layers, paper in sheet form or any other cheap absorbent material. As shown, this napkin body is composed of a plurality of layers or plies 2, any desired number of which may be employed to produce the necessary thickness, a waterproof inner liner or filler 3 being arranged near the bottom of said body between the plies thereof over which are arranged'one or more of said plies to absorb any fluid which may pass around the edges of the filler. The side edges of the absorbent layers or plies preferably extend beyond the side edges of the iiller as shown at 4 in Fig. 4 to avoid all possibility of the edges of the filler chang the skin of the user. This filler or inner liner 3 may be composed of any suitable waterproof sheet material such as rubberized cloth, sheet rubber, oil cloth, oil silk or paratiin treated fabric, the requirements necessary being that it shall be impervious to fluid.
This inner liner or ller 3 is placed between the plies or layers of absorbent fabric near the bottom ofthe article and the ends thereof extend beyond the ends of the layers and are turned inwardly as shown at 5 and covered by yother layers and secured to the body by any suitable means, glue 6 being' here shown for this purpose.
This pad 1 is designed to be encased in a cheese-cloth orany suitable envelope or cover 7 which is shown in the form of a rectangular sheet having theedges 8 thereof lapping when in operative position, the double or multiple ply ends 9 thereof being foldable one over the other as shown in Fig. l when the pads are to be packed in a suitable container and these ends are designed to be open 'out and used as attaching elements for securing the pad in operative position when in use. i
The gist of the invention resides in the arrangement of a waterproof inner liner in an absorbent pad of this character and so locating it as to prevent all possibility of iuid passing through or beyond the edges of the pad. Y
In the form shown inFig. 5, the construction is exactly the same as that shown in the other figures except that the corners of the pad are rounded as shown at 10 to render the device more comfortable and to prevent the corners 'from catching in clothing.
While the details disclosed may be considered as preferred, it is to be understood tion, variations may be made.
IA claim:-
A sanitary napkin comprising a main absorptive pad formed of a multiplicity of plies,` a liquid-proof fluid-spreading strip of 'less width than said pad, said strip extending along the lower side of the pad and having its endsl turned inwardly upon and secured to the pad ends, the longitudinal edges of said strip being inwardly spaced from those vof the pad to prevent chang of the wearer by said edges, an auxiliary relatively thin pad formed of a plurality of plies, said auxiliary pad lying 'against the lower side of and being secured at its ends to said strip, said auxiliary pad being of the same length and width as said main pad, whereby of said strip and secured to the latter, the the longitudinal edge portions of said auxlast named plies, preventing chafing of the iliary pad project beyond the longitudinal wearer by said inturned strip ends. edges of said strip to absorb any fluid which Intestimony whereof I have hereunto may creep around said edges, and a relaii'ixed my signature.
tively few plies of absorptive material lying upon said main pad and said inturned ends HARRY S. WILLIAMS.
