IMPROVEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION OF BERRY-BARRELS.
I Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 169,657, dated November 9, 1875; application filed AugustlO, 1874.
'1 '0 alt whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES 0. PAUL, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Manufacture of Berry- Barrels, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of ventilated barrels, which have openings near the contractedends, the object of my invention being to facilitate the manufacture and reduce the expense of such barrels. These objects I attain in the manner which I will now proceed to describe, and which is illustrated by the figure in the accompanying drawing. 7
The ventilated barrel on which my improvements are based has openings at a arranged near each end. the middle being closed, so that when the barrel is rolled over the ground the contracted and perforated end portions will be free from contact therewith, the entrance of particles of dirt and dust into the barrel through the openings being thus prevented Without interfering with the ventilation. I
In making these barrels, it has heretofore been usual to cut slots in the body of each stave near the ends-a tedious and expensive operation, which I obviate by recessing each stave at its opposite edges, theconltiguons portions of the edges of adjoining staves being removed, as shown in the drawing, to form the intervening openings a. The recesses may be made with great rapidity, with simple tools, operated by unskilled workmen.
