Details of this elevating mech- This invention relatesto improvements in table lam s of the disappearing type and has for its prmcipal object to prov1de a new and limproved construction whereby the lamp may be automatically lighted when it is in raised position and extinguished when lowered.
A further object is to provide an improved construction of extensible lamp shield which is automatically closed when the lamp is lowered. A further object is to provide an 11nproved form o f marginal frame especially adapted for use with glass table tops whereby said tops will be protected from injury or breakage due to operation of the lamp.
Other objects of the invention will appear from time to time as the description proceeds.
The invention may best be understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the device constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the lamp body in fully raised position.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the device but with the lam body shown in its lowered position and wlth the outside casing omitted.

Referring now to details shown in the drawings, the invention is shown as. applied to a desk lamp consisting of a lamp body 11 having a shade 12. preferably rectangular in form and open at the bottom so as to shed rays from the. lamp 14 therein in a downwardly direction. The shade 12 is supported by two uprights 16, 16, on the horizontally disposed base plate 17. The lamp body 11 including the shade 12, base plate 17 and supports 16, 16, constitutes a unitary structure arranged to be moved vertically with respect to the'top of the table or desk 10.
Any suitable means may be utilized for elevating the lampbody, in the form hereinshown, the elevating means being of the spring motor type broadl disclosed in copending application of illiam P odrouzek,
anism need not be described herein as it forms no part of the present invention excepting to point out that the spring motor 40 drives shaft 41 having beveled gears 46 thereon which engage beveled gears 47 on a. pair of longitudinally dis sed shafts 48. will be seen in Figures 1 and 3 a pair of conductors 5() and 51 lead from the lamp base 14a down the adjacent support 16 and from thence to a pair of terminals 52"and 53 respectively, mounted on a cross brace 54, preferably of insulating material, carried on downwardly extending guide members 49, 49, at one end of the base plate 17. A pair of spring contacts 58, 59, are connected to the terminals 52 and 53 respectively, and are bent downwardly in positlon to engage relatively fixed contacts 58 and 59A supported on an insulating piece 54 adjacent the upper ends of the upright frame members 55, 55;
These xed contacts 58l and 59 are provided with suitable terminals 58b and 59b rojecting outwardly from the insulating piece 54 in position to be engaged by a detachable circuit plug of any suitable construction. The arrangement is such that spring contacts 58 and 59 engage theirrespective fixed contacts 58EL and 59al only when the lamp body is in fully raised position, and are disengaged therefrom as soon as the lamp body is lowered, thereby automatically cutting off the source of current supply when the lamp is lowered and not in use.
In connection with the lamp shade 12, I provide a shade portion 72 pivoted near its upper margin on hinge 73 so that said shade portion may be pulled outwardly to afford an increased spread of light when the lamp is in use, as shown in Figure 4. In order to insure the proper closing of this shade portion 72 when the lamp body is lowered, I provide a depending cam arm 74 attached to the lower margin of shade portion 72 and extending inwardly therefrom in a position to enlos gage the marginal frame 21 when the lamp shade is lowered, thereb causing the shade portion 72 to be automatically closed, as indicated in Figure 4.
I find further that in applyin a lamp or similaidisappearing stand to ta lesliaving glass tops it is desirable to secure the marginal frame member 21 to the wooden portion y of the table but to raise the upper surface of the marginal frame 21 to the same level as the upper surface of the glass top. Accordingly, as shown in the drawings, I provide a marginal framefwith an outwardly flanged portion 21* and a downwardly extending mar inal flan e 21b of the same height as the thic ness of t e glass top to be used therewith. With this construction, the frame may be readily set in place and secured to the Wooden base of the table top. The glass to may then be ap lied in a position which wiil be found to be ush with the top of the marginal frame 21. Furthermore, the Glass top 1s cut so as to fit snugly around the Irame 21 and will be rotected by the latter from accidental bre. age or injury incident to the raising and lowering of the lamp body.
Although I haveshown and described the particular embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited to the construction shown and described, but that various changes and modifications may be made without departing from the spirit `and scope of my invention.
I claim:
1. In combination with a table top havingl an aperture, a disappearing lamp body movable vertically in said aperture and ineluding a shade and support therefor, said shade having a movable portion extensible laterally beyond the margin of said aperture when said shade is in raised position, and means carried b said extensible shade portion coacting with the tabletop for automatically returning said shade portion to closed position when said shade is lowered into said aperture.
2. In combination with a table top having anaperture, a disappearing lamp bod movable vertically in said aperture and including a shade and support therefor, said shade having a movable portion extensible laterally beyond the margin of said aperture when said shade is in raised position, and cam means extending downwardly from said extensible shade portion coacting with the table top for automatically returning said shade portiony to closed position when said shade is lowered into said aperture.
