IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 184,446, dated November 14, 1876 application led August 30, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PETER TREIBAL, of the city and county of St. Louis and State of 'Missourh have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vegetable-Glitters, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication.

vMy invention consists in a vegetable-cutter having a close box, consisting of upper and lower portions, the lower portion having bearing for the shaft of the knife-barrel and a removable door, and the upper portion having a removable hopper inserted .from above, supported on the box, and formed to fit the barrel, as hereinafter set forth.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section at x x. Fig. 2 is a transverse section at m w. Fig. 3 is a detail longitudinal section, showing the manner of attaching the knives to the barrel.

-A is a box or case, made in two parts, 1, 2, as shown, connected together by hinges a and a hook, a', so as to open at the horizontal joint B, at the point of bearing of the shaft G. This shaft turns in bearings b, made in the meeting edges B of the upper and lower portions of the box. The shaft 0 is turned by a hand-crank, C. Upon the shaft (l is a cutterbarrel, I), of a frusto-conical shape, and having attached to its circumference inclined knives or cutters E. These knives are attached, at their ends, to the ends of the barrel by screws e, and the distance of the edges of the knives from the surface of the barrel is regulated by shims e', of the required thickness, placed beneath the ends of the knives. Slots F are madev in the barrel beneath the knives, to allow the sliced material to drop into the barrel. This material is discharged from the larger end of the barrel through anv aperture in the side of the box, which aperture is shown as closed by a removable shutter, Gr. H is the hopper, which fits in an aperture in the top of the box, from which it may be drawn out at will. The hopperis supported by a cleat or bead surrounding it, and rest-` the box opened wide, so that there is no difticulty in cleaning all the parts.

The operation is as follows: The 'article to be sliced or cut is put into the hopper and the barrel turned; the slices drop into the barrel, and are discharged from its larger end.

I claim as my invention- A vegetable-cutter case, consisting of a close box, A, horizontally divided on a line with the shaft C, and provided with bearings b and hinges a, and the removable hopper H, as and for the purpose set forth.
