vention resides in thenovel construction, com- Patented Aug. 8, .1933 i Ligii Gas Coon Oscar J. Leins, Milwaukee, Wis.,'assignor to Milwaukee Gas Specialty Company, Milwaukee, *Wis., a Corporation of Wisconsin Application April 27, 1931. Serial No. 533,197
2 Claims.
invention relates'to certain Vnew and useful improvements in gas cocks, and refers more particularly to the means for adjusting the area of the outlet or discharge orifice.
The means for eiecting this adjustment ordinarily includes a member provided with a pointed substantially conical tip, which is known in the art as a jet plug and heretofore it has been customary to place this jet plug within the bore of the outlet opening with its tip projected therefrom to cooperate with an opening in a cap threaded onto the outlet of thecock, to, upon movement of the cap toward and away from the jet plug, decrease and increase the areaiof the opening.
However, it was difficult with this construction to obtain accuracy of adjustment, as the. threads 4by which the cap was mounted were often out of axial alignment with the bore in which the jet plug-was disposed so that the tip of the plug of'center with lrespect to the cap would be out opening.
. It is', therefore, an object of this invention to Vvprovide a novel manner of associating the jet plug with theorice with whichv it cooperates so that-absolute accuracy is possible. Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a gas cock structure -in which the jet plug is moved toward and away from the orice' with which .it cooperates to 'eiect the desired adjustment.
And another object of this invention is to generally improve the construction of gas cocks.
With the-above and other 'objects in/view which will appear as the 'description proceeds, my inbination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described vand more particularly dened by the appended claims,'it being understood that-such changesin the precise embodivment of -the hereindisclcsed invention may be I made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing, I'have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed 'according to the best mode I have so far devised. for the practical application of the principles thereoffend in which: j
Figure 1 is a view partly in section and partly in elevation of c gas cock embodying my invention and illustrating the Vsam'e associated with a stringersupply pipe, and a mixing manifold;
Figure -2 is a cross sectional view taken through Figure 1 'ont the plane of the line 2 2; and
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the jet plug and the means for adjusting the same, portions thereof being broken away to illustrate structural details.
Referring now more particularly to the accorn panying drawing, in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the several views, the numeral 5 represents the body of a gas cock which in the present instance is substantially T shaped and has a longitudinal bore 6 and a transverse tapered bore v'7 in its stem. r:Phe tapered bore 7 is adapted to receive a'tapered valve plug 8 which, by means of a'handle' may be moved to control the passage of fuel from a supply pipe 9 with which the cock is associated through the longitudinal bore to a transverse bore 10 in the head 'of the T shaped' body, from which it issues 'accuracy of adjustment.
Slidably disposed in the bore 10 is a jet plug 13 having a pointed substantially conical tip 14 adapted to cooperate. with the inner peripheral edge of the orifice 11 to, upon movement toward and away from the orice, adjust the area of the opening and thereby vary the volume of fuel Iflowing from the orifice.
The jet plug 13 is tubular and preferably drawn from a' single blank of light stamping material and has a plurality of radially disposed longitudinal webs or ribs 15 on its outer surface which slidably engage'the wall of the bore 10 and accurately center the plug with respect thereto and consequently with respect to the orice 11. i The webs or ribs 1 5 also space the main body ofv the jet plug from the wall of the bore 10 and thus provide passages through which the fuel flows to the orice.
Longitudinal movementisvimparted to the jet plug by means of an adjusting stem 16 connected with the inner end ofthe plug, in a manner to be later described, and provided with a threaded head 17 adapted for threaded engagement with an internal thread 18 formed in the end of the bore 10 opposite the orifice 11. A screw slot 19 formedin the extreme outer end of the stem 16 Apermits vthe same to be turned to aect longitudinal motion thereof which is imparted to the jet plug. through its connectionl therewith.
Ilhe connection between the stem and the jet plug permits relative rotational movement between these elements while restricting longitudinal movement therebetween, and comprisesv a reduced head 20 on the adjacent end of the stem which is disposed Within the inner end of which engage behind a shoulder 23 formed by l5 reducing the stem inwardly of its head 20.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which an invention of the character described appertains, that positively accurate adjustment is atl all times possible with the device of this invention, for the bore 10 and the orifice 11, being formed in the same member and at the same time positively assures their being in axial alignment and by reason of the snug sliding engagement of the relatively long edges of the plug Webs l5 within the inner wall of the bore 10 accurate alignment between the axis of the plug and the- I orice 11 to center the conical tip 14 with the oriiice is also assured, and inasmuch'as the connection between the plug and its adjusting stem has a degreeof play, any slight misalignment which may exist between the thread 18 and the bore 10 is accommodated without tending to marvel ment in the bore comprising a cylindrical hollow body having a pointed end adapted to cooperate with the constriction at the end of the bore to meter the flow of fluid therethrough, a plurality of longitudinal iins extending radially from the cylindrical body to slidably engage the wall of the bore and positively center the valve element with respect to the bore and its constriction, said longitudinal ns being at least twice as long as the diameter of the bore so as to have a lon'g contact with the wall of the bore, and means to adjust said valve element in the bore comprising a stem having a freely rotatable connection with the valve element and a threaded head engaged with the internally threaded end portion of thebore.
2`. In a valve of the character described, a body having a bore of uniform diameter with a constrictionat one end and internally threaded at its oppositeend, a valve element disposed within the bore comprising a hollow cylindrical body from the cylindrical body to slidably engage the wall of the bore, said fins being at least twice as longas the diameter of the bore to have a lon contact with the Wall of thevbore and thus positively hold the valve element in axial alignment with the constriction whereby the pointed closed v,end of the element may cooperate accurately therewith to meter the iiow of uid therethrough, and means to adjust said valve element comprising a stem having a reduced end to dene an abrupt shoulder, said Ireduced end projecting into the open end of the cylindrical valve body with the end of the valve body abutting said shoulder, said reduced end of the stem lhaving an annular groove, and projections 'pressed from the cylindrical wall of the valve into said annular lgroove to rotatably and non-longitudinally movably connect the stem with the valve element,
and a threaded head on the stem engaged with l the threaded end portion of the bore.
