SOOTTO BERRY, OF NEW SHARON, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO RICHARD H. MERRILL AND JOHN P. MERRILL, OF SKOWHEGAN, ME.
IMPROVEMENT IN MOCCASINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,914, dated August 7, 1877; application filed June 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, SooTTo BERRY, of New Sharon, in the county'of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Moccasins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side view of my moccasin. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view throughww. Figs. 3, 4, 5, and 6 are details of the same.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of moccasins, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is .made, fully illustrates my invention..
The upper of the moccasin is made of two parts, A A, which are sewed together from a to a and from b to b, the former seam running from the top at the front down along the top of the foot to the toe, and the latter seam straight down in the back.
0 represents the bottom or outer sole, which is made of sole-leather, and has the edges turned up all round, and the upper then sewed to it, so that the seam will be above that part of the bottom which touches the ground.
D represents the inner sole, made of soleleather, which is secured to the upper parts A A by means of closing-stitches, substantially as shown in 2 of the drawings.
This moccasin is put together by hand or machine with waxed thread.
The upper A A is made of leather finished on the grain, and is in the form of a halfboot.
In the bottom (J I makeachannel, d, around the edge,/ to settle the stitches into, and a heel may be applied if desired.
This moccasin is cheap and easily manufactured. It is soft and easy to the foot, and more durable than those generally used. The inner sole 1) protects the foot from dampness, 850.
At the heel is fastened a stiftfening or support, B, extending forward on both sides a suitable distance.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A moccasin composed of the parts A A, Q
united at front and rear, and formingthe upper, the counter B, the insole D, united as shown to the parts A A, and the overlapping outer sole 0, all substantially as shown and described. I
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
SOOTTO BERRY. Witnesses:
JOHN W. H. BAKER, HORACE B. PRESCOTT.
