Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEO. E. CHENOWETH, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPRVEM ENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part oi' Letters Patent No. 19,749, dated March 30, 1858.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEoRGE E. CHENOWETH, of the city of Baltimore,in the State of Maryland, have invented an Improvement in Reap ing-Machines; and I do hereby declare'th'e following to be a correct deseriptionof the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, which isa perspective view ofthe machine conlplete.
Myinvention consists in compensating Wear in the worm of thedrivingcylinder ordrum by making the cylinder of adjustable parts, all as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawing, letters Gr G represent a spurwheel and pinion, the wheel heilig attached to the inside of the large drivingwlieel of the machine and the pinion fastened to the end of :lie axis of the grooved cylinder. This simple gearing drives the. drum orcylinderD D, which has a grooveor worm, C U, arranged as shown, which, by means ot' the rolling or friction pin P, works the horizontal slidngbarB B, which liiu line with and connected to the knife-bar The drum D D is formed of two cylinders, sliding freely on a feathered axis, as shown, and adjusted and fixed in any desired position by means of nuts N N on the axis. Theparts ot' the drum muy he approximated by means of these nuts whenever the wear of the Worm requires to he compensated. Thepin P basa. friction-roller upon it to facilitate its play in the groove C C.
The operation is as follows: As the drum D D revolves, driven by the spur-gearing` G G, it communicatesa reciprocating motion to the pin l and the sli-.le-bnr B B, attached to it. This har', being attached to the knife-bar K K, imparts a corresponding motion to the knives.
The advantages of this machine are simphcity ot' construction, directness of action, compensation for wear, and theabsence oftllat uncertainty of stroke which has been so important an objection to cam-machines.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is Gompensating for the wear of the worm or groove in the driving-cylinder by making the parts oi' that cylinder adjustable, as described,
ofthe cutters.
The above speci lication signed and witnessed this 4th day ot' March, A. l). 1858.
