Definitions

  • a system and method are disclosed which generally relate to lotteries.
  • a lottery is generally a distribution of tokens such that a subset of the distributed tokens may win a prize.
  • the token can be in the form of a ticket.
  • One of the most popular forms of lottery involves the distribution of lottery game tickets.
  • Each lottery game ticket includes a lottery game number. After the lottery game tickets have been distributed to the lottery game ticket holders, the winning number is chosen. The usual method of selecting the winning number involves a random selection of the winning number.
  • a random number generator can be used to randomly select the winning number.
  • Lotteries are normally used by jurisdictions according to a pari-mutuel model in which the prize is funded by a portion of the ticket sales. For instance, when a purchaser buys a lottery game ticket, a portion of the revenue received from the ticket sale is provided to the jackpot prize. Accordingly, an increasing number of ticket sales will lead to a larger jackpot.
  • a multi-jurisdictional lottery game is a lottery game that can be played in a local jurisdiction or in a non-local jurisdiction. Further, the prize is built from ticket sales from the local and non-local jurisdictions.
  • the term “jurisdiction” is intended to mean any geographically recognized boundary that is recognized within a country by its government, e.g., a province, state, county, city, town, or municipality.
  • the term “jurisdiction” can also refer to any geographically recognized boundary that is recognized by an international body or set of nations. For instance, a jurisdiction can be a country.
  • the term “local jurisdiction” is intended to provide a point of reference for the jurisdiction in which the lottery game ticket is purchased or where a lottery game ticket purchaser resides, depending on the configuration, whereas the term “non-local jurisdiction” is intended to provide a point of reference for jurisdictions outside the geographic boundaries of the local jurisdiction.
  • the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can include multiple jurisdictions. For instance, the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can include the local jurisdiction that is the point of reference for a particular resident and multiple non-local jurisdictions. In essence, there may be multiple local jurisdictions in that residents or purchasers in the different jurisdictions will each view his or her jurisdiction as the local jurisdiction.
  • multi-jurisdictional lottery games are designed to provide higher jackpot levels, thereby addressing a primary interest of players in participating in a lottery game. Instead of having a jackpot prize that is limited in size to ticket sales from a single jurisdiction, the multi-jurisdictional lottery can have a much larger jackpot prize that includes ticket sales from multiple jurisdictions.
  • a jurisdiction which has a large number of ticket purchasers is more likely to have a winner than a jurisdiction that has a small number of ticket purchasers.
  • the current multi-jurisdictional lottery game generally provides or may be perceived to provide greater benefit to jurisdictions with a larger population than to those with a smaller population.
  • potential purchasers in the smaller jurisdictions may have less incentive to take part in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game, even if the prize is significantly larger than that of the local jurisdictional lottery game.
  • the odds in the multi-jurisdictional game are generally set higher to increase the potential for a roll-over.
  • a roll-over is intended to mean a carrying forward of unclaimed jackpot funds, due to the absence of winning tickets, into a new jackpot.
  • the multi-jurisdictional lottery makes it more difficult for purchasers of lottery game tickets to win the jackpot prize.
  • a larger jackpot generally results from combining a percentage of the ticket sales revenue from the current game with the roll-over (i.e., the amount allocated to the jackpot from prior-game ticket sales which was not won in those prior games).
  • purchasers of tickets for the multi-jurisdictional lottery game in a local jurisdiction with a relatively small population are now faced with a smaller chance of winning because of the lower volume of ticket sales and the lower odds of winning built into the game to promote a roll-over.

A multi-jurisdictional lottery game is provided which has a multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize that includes a first percentage of a first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from a local jurisdiction and a second percentage of a second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from a non-local jurisdiction. Further, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game price is provided for which the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be played. In addition, an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game having a local jurisdictional lottery game prize that includes a percentage of a set of local jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is provided. An add-on local jurisdictional lottery game price is provided, in addition to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game price, for which the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game can be played. Participation in the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game is restricted to entrants in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. The local jurisdictional lottery game can have more than one jackpot. A local jurisdictional lottery game is also provided which is integrated with the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and does not require payment of an additional price for participation.

Description

    BACKGROUND
  • 1. Field
  • A system and method are disclosed which generally relate to lotteries.
  • 2. General Background
  • A lottery is generally a distribution of tokens such that a subset of the distributed tokens may win a prize. The token can be in the form of a ticket. One of the most popular forms of lottery involves the distribution of lottery game tickets. Each lottery game ticket includes a lottery game number. After the lottery game tickets have been distributed to the lottery game ticket holders, the winning number is chosen. The usual method of selecting the winning number involves a random selection of the winning number. A random number generator can be used to randomly select the winning number. Some lottery systems require the ticket to have the entire number that is randomly selected while other lottery systems require the ticket to have a superset of an ordered sequence of numbers that are randomly selected.
  • Multi-jurisdictional lottery games have become popular both within the United States and internationally. A multi-jurisdictional lottery game is a lottery game that can be played in a local jurisdiction or in a non-local jurisdiction. Further, the prize is built from ticket sales from the local and non-local jurisdictions. The term “jurisdiction” is intended to mean any geographically recognized boundary that is recognized within a country by its government, e.g., a province, state, county, city, town, or municipality. The term “jurisdiction” can also refer to any geographically recognized boundary that is recognized by an international body or set of nations. For instance, a jurisdiction can be a country. The term “local jurisdiction” is intended to provide a point of reference for the jurisdiction in which the lottery game ticket is purchased or where a lottery game ticket purchaser resides, depending on the configuration, whereas the term “non-local jurisdiction” is intended to provide a point of reference for jurisdictions outside the geographic boundaries of the local jurisdiction. The multi-jurisdictional lottery game can include multiple jurisdictions.
  • The benefit of multi-jurisdictional lottery games, as currently offered, is that they are designed to provide higher jackpot levels, thereby addressing a primary interest of players in participating in a lottery game. Instead of having a jackpot prize that is limited in size to ticket sales from a single jurisdiction, the multi-jurisdictional lottery can have a much larger jackpot prize that includes ticket sales from multiple jurisdictions.
  • A correlation generally exists between the ticket sales volume and the number of winners for a particular jurisdiction. In other words, a jurisdiction which has a large number of ticket purchasers is more likely to have a winner than a jurisdiction that has a small number of ticket purchasers. Accordingly, the current multi-jurisdictional lottery game generally provides or may be perceived to provide greater benefit to jurisdictions with a larger population than to those with a smaller population. As a result, potential purchasers in the smaller jurisdictions may have less incentive to take part in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game, even if the prize is significantly larger than that of the local jurisdictional lottery game.
  • In addition, the odds in the multi-jurisdictional game are generally set higher to increase the potential for a roll-over. A roll-over is intended to mean a carrying forward of unclaimed jackpot funds, due to the absence of winning tickets, into a new jackpot. By setting the odds lower, the multi-jurisdictional lottery makes it more difficult for purchasers of lottery game tickets to win the jackpot prize. A larger jackpot generally results from combining a percentage of the ticket sales revenue from the current game with the roll-over (i.e., the amount allocated to the jackpot from prior-game ticket sales which was not won in those prior games). However, purchasers of tickets for the multi-jurisdictional lottery game in a local jurisdiction with a relatively small population are now faced with a smaller chance of winning because of the lower volume of ticket sales and the lower odds of winning built into the game to promote a roll-over.

  • DETAILED DESCRIPTION
  • A method and system for providing a lottery game are described herein. An add-on local jurisdictional lottery game and an integrated local jurisdictional lottery game are provided. In one embodiment, an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game is provided in addition to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game for an extra fee. Participation in the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game can be limited to those who participate in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. An extra fee can be charged for participation in the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game. In one embodiment, the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game is based on a pari-mutuel model so that a portion is taken from the extra fee received from the tickets that are sold and is allocated to a local jurisdictional game jackpot that is separate from the multijurisdictional game jackpot. A jackpot is herein defined as a variable prize with a progressive feature and roll-over capability. A jackpot can also have a minimum that can be won. In another embodiment, a portion of the extra fee is also provided to secondary prizes such as fixed prizes in a local jurisdictional lottery game. Accordingly, a participant in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and add-on local jurisdictional lottery game can participate in a game that has a large jackpot and relatively low odds of winning (e.g., the multi-jurisdictional lottery game), and a game with a smaller population base and corresponding prospective customer base, as well as better odds than the multi-jurisdictional lottery game (e.g., the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game), so that there is a better chance of winning at least one jackpot.
  • Further, the local jurisdictional game jackpot may accumulate to a larger size than would ordinarily be seen in an ordinary local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot because more local participants would be induced to play. In other words, some local residents are reluctant to play in an ordinary local jurisdictional lottery game because the jackpot for the ordinary local jurisdictional lottery game is normally too small to interest them. However, those same local residents may be interested in playing in the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game knowing that the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game can only be played by participants of the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. As a result, the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game may have a larger jackpot and can induce more players to participate than a typical stand-alone local jurisdictional lottery game.
  • In one embodiment, a participant can obtain a single ticket for both the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game. Different lottery game numbers can be selected for the multi-jurisdictional and add-on local jurisdictional lottery games. In another embodiment, a single lottery game number can be selected for the multi-jurisdictional and add-on local jurisdictional lottery games.
  • In another embodiment, an integrated local jurisdictional lottery game is provided for which an extra fee is not charged for participation in the local jurisdictional lottery game. By purchasing a multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket, a purchaser is also automatically enrolled into the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game.
  • FIG. 1 illustrates a country 100 providing the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. In one embodiment, the country 100 includes Province A 100, Province B 102 and Province C 106. Each province participates in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. In one embodiment, each province provides a portion of the ticket sales revenue to a multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108. The multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize can be a jackpot or fixed prize.
  • As illustrated, the size of the different provinces varies. For instance, Province B is much larger than Province A. Assuming that the populations of the provinces are commensurate with their geographical size and similar percentages of the population play the games, there is a greater likelihood that a resident from Province B will win the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize than a resident from Province A. Accordingly, residents from Province A may become disenchanted with, and disincentivized from participating in, the multi-jurisdictional lottery game.
  • The multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be implemented with a variety of different types of jurisdictions. For instance, the jurisdictions can be countries, provinces, states, counties, cities, towns, or municipalities. In one embodiment, the different types of jurisdictions can participate with one another. For instance, a state and a city from another state can be the jurisdictions.
  • FIG. 2 illustrates a local jurisdictional lottery game 200. The Province A 102 can operate a pari-mutuel model and accumulate a local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202 from a percentage of ticket sales revenue received. The local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202 can be a jackpot or fixed prize. As can be seen from FIG. 1, the Province A 102 is much smaller than the Province B. Assuming no change in the odds of winning, the residents of Province A do not expect that the local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202 will accumulate to a large prize because of the relatively small population.
  • FIG. 3 illustrates a local jurisdictional lottery game that is restricted to participants in a multi-jurisdictional lottery game. For instance, the Province A 102 offers participation in both the local jurisdictional lottery game, which is provided at geographic locations within the Province A 102, and the multi-jurisdictional lottery game, which is provided at geographic locations within the Province A 102 in addition to geographic locations within non-local jurisdictions such as Provinces B and C.
  • In one embodiment, the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the local jurisdictional lottery game operate according to a pari-mutuel model. Accordingly, a portion of the ticket sales revenue from the multi-jurisdictional lottery game is provided to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108. In addition, a portion of the ticket sales revenue from the local jurisdictional lottery game is provided to the local jurisdictional lottery game lottery game jackpot prize.
  • In another embodiment, both the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the local jurisdictional lottery game need not be based on the pari-mutuel model. For instance, both or either of these lottery games can be based on a probabilistic model in which a significant starting jackpot can be provided through a guarantee to induce ticket purchases, or a jackpot prize can be provided which is backed by a guarantee if the ticket sales revenue does not suffice for accumulating the jackpot prize. The advertisement of the starting jackpot prize is intended to provide inducement to potential lottery participants that would normally wait until the jackpot grows to a substantial level before purchasing a lottery game ticket. In addition, the increase in ticket sales provides inducement to licensed vendors within the local jurisdiction because their compensation increases according to sales and prizes won by their customers. Accordingly, the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be based on a probabilistic model while the local jurisdictional lottery game is based on a pari-mutuel model, and vice versa. Further, both the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the local jurisdictional lottery game can be based on a probabilistic model. Finally, the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the local jurisdictional lottery game can be based on any other lottery game model known to one of ordinary skill in the art.
  • In one embodiment, a participant can purchase entry into the multi-jurisdictional lottery game without purchasing entry into the local jurisdictional lottery game. However, the participant cannot purchase entry into the local jurisdictional lottery game without purchasing entry into the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. The add-on local jurisdictional lottery game essentially becomes an add-on game to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game for which an extra fee can be paid for participation. As a result, residents of the local jurisdiction are more likely to play the multi-jurisdictional lottery game so that they can play the local jurisdictional lottery game. The problem of the multi-jurisdictional lottery game not receiving participation from local residents who would rather play in a local jurisdictional lottery game where the chances of winning are better is thereby alleviated. In addition, residents of the local jurisdiction that were not interested in playing an independent local jurisdictional lottery game because the jackpot is not large enough are incentivized to participate. The multi-jurisdictional lottery game can have a relatively large jackpot, and the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot can accumulate to a greater degree than normally seen because prospective ticket purchasers that may have been hesitant to play a stand-alone local jurisdictional lottery game may be incentivized to do so in that there is a possibility of winning a large jackpot associated with the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and a possibility of winning one or more large jackpots associated with an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game.
  • Accordingly, the local jurisdiction is encouraged to promote both the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game. As a result, revenues can be increased for both the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game.
  • In one embodiment, the ticket sales revenue received from the local jurisdictional lottery game is separated from the ticket sales revenue received from the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. Accordingly, the portion of the ticket sales revenue received from the local jurisdictional lottery game that is designated for the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108 is provided to the local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202 rather than to both the local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202 and the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108. This configuration provides incentive to potential local jurisdictional lottery game ticket purchasers because the extra fee for the add-on game is not being provided back to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108 and, therefore, contributes to prizes that only they can win and may lead to roll-overs that only befit purchasers of local jurisdictional lottery game tickets.
  • In one embodiment, a complete match of the lottery game numbers or symbols is needed to win the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108, and a complete match of the lottery game numbers or symbols is needed to win the local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202. In yet another embodiment, a complete match of the lottery game numbers or symbols is needed to win the multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize 108 while a less than complete match of the lottery game numbers or symbols is needed to win the local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202, thereby improving the odds of winning the local jurisdictional lottery game prize 202 in order to provide a further inducement to increase participation in the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game. Accordingly, licensed vendors in the local jurisdiction are also induced because their compensation increases according to sales and prizes won by their customers. In another embodiment, lottery operators in the local jurisdiction can implement the criteria needed to win the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game based on the number of lottery game ticket purchases in the given local jurisdiction. In another embodiment, the local jurisdictional lottery game can provide more than one jackpot and require a complete match to win the larger primary jackpot and less than a complete match to win the smaller or secondary jackpot for the local jurisdictional lottery game. In yet another embodiment, the local jurisdictional lottery game provides a larger primary jackpot that requires a complete match and a smaller secondary prize such as a fixed prize that requires less than a complete match.
  • In another embodiment, the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot is variable, i.e. a progressive jackpot that can grow according to the number of tickets sold or the amount of ticket sales revenue. In another embodiment, the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game provides a fixed prize that can be funded by ticket sales, but does not change in size based on the number of tickets sold or ticket sales revenue. Further, the fixed prize can be based on a probabilistic model, or any other model for creating a fixed prize.
  • FIG. 4 illustrates a process 400 for providing an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game. At a process block 402, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game is provided. The multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize includes a first percentage of a first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from a local jurisdiction and a second percentage of a second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from a non-local jurisdiction. In one embodiment, the first percentage of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is equal to the second percentage of the second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales. At a process block 404, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game price is provided at which the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be played. Further, at a process block 406, an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game is provided that has a local jurisdictional lottery game prize that includes a percentage of a set of local jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales revenue. In addition, at a process block 408, an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game price is provided in addition to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game price for which the local jurisdictional lottery game can be played. In one embodiment, participation in the local jurisdictional lottery game is restricted to entrants in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game.
  • FIG. 5 illustrates a local jurisdictional lottery add-on game that provides multiple progressive prize levels. For instance, the local jurisdictional lottery add-on game can provide for multiple progressive jackpot levels. A first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 can be won according to a first set of criteria. In one embodiment, the first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 is a jackpot. In another embodiment, the first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 is a fixed prize. For instance, the first set of criteria can require a complete match of all numbers or symbols. On the other hand, a second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 504 can be won according to a second set of criteria distinct from the first set of criteria. For example, the second set of criteria can require a partial match of all numbers or symbols. In one embodiment, the multijurisdictional lottery game requires a complete match to win the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. In one embodiment, the second level jurisdictional lottery game prize 504 is a jackpot. In another embodiment, the second level jurisdictional lottery game prize 504 is a fixed prize. Accordingly, residents of the Province A 102 have further inducement to purchase a lottery game ticket for the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game because the residents have a jackpot for which the residents have even better odds of winning than the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. Further, licensed vendors in the Province are also induced because their compensation increases according to sales and prizes won by their customers.
  • In one embodiment, a portion of the revenue received from the local lottery jurisdiction ticket sales is provided to the first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 and another portion of the revenue received from the local jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is provided to the second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 504. In one embodiment, a larger portion of the revenue received from the local lottery jurisdiction ticket sales is provided to the first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 than the second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 504 because the first level add-on local jurisdictional lottery game prize is more difficult to win than the second level add-on local jurisdictional lottery game prize. The first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 can be a variable or fixed prize while the second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 504 can also be a variable or fixed prize. One configuration has the first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 502 with a variable prize and the second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize 504 as a fixed prize.
  • Alternative configurations can be provided for the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game. In one embodiment, the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game can be implemented by a subset of the jurisdictions participating in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. For instance, two or more smaller jurisdictions may offer a consolidated local jurisdictional lottery game. This type of local jurisdictional lottery game may provide inducement to potential lottery game ticket purchasers that are looking to participate in a lottery game that gives them better odds than the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and has a larger jackpot than can be provided by a stand-alone local jurisdictional lottery game. As an example, a group of small neighboring provinces may be interested in this type of configuration. In addition, licensed vendors are also induced because their compensations increase with ticket sales.
  • FIG. 6 illustrates another process 600 for providing an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game with multiple prize levels. At a process block 602, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game is provided that has a multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize. A first percentage of a first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is included from a local jurisdiction, and a second percentage of a second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is included from a non-local jurisdiction. In one embodiment, the first percentage of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is equal to the second percentage of the second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales. At a process block 604, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket price is provided for which the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be played. Further, at a process block 606, an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game is provided having a first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize that can be won according to a first set of criteria and a second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize that can be won according to a second set of criteria that is distinct from the first set of criteria. The first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize includes a first level add-on local game percentage of a set of local jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales. Further, the second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize includes a second level add-on local game percentage of the set of the local jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales. In addition, at a process block 608, an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game price is provided in addition to the multi-jurisdictional lottery game price, for which the local jurisdictional lottery game can be played. In one embodiment, participation in the local jurisdictional lottery game is restricted to entrants in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game.
  • In an alternative embodiment, the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game is integrated into the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. In other words, a separate fee would not be charged for participating in the local jurisdictional lottery game. Rather, a participant is automatically entered into the local jurisdictional lottery game when participating in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. Accordingly, a pre-determined portion of the integrated game ticket sales revenue generated by ticket sales by a local jurisdiction can be retained by the local jurisdiction for prizes which will only be awarded to winners who purchase tickets in or are residents of that local jurisdiction.
  • In one embodiment, the integrated lottery game randomly generates a lottery game number for the multi-jurisdictional lottery game and randomly generates a different lottery game number for the local jurisdictional lottery game. A lottery game ticket can be printed to display both of these lottery game numbers. A complete match for the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can result in winning the multi-jurisdictional lottery game jackpot. Further, a complete match for the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game can result in winning the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot, which is funded by a portion of the ticket sales from the integrated lottery game. In another embodiment, a less than complete match for the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can result in winning the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot. In one embodiment, the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot is variable, i.e. a progressive jackpot that can grow according to the number of tickets sold or ticket sales revenue. The progressive jackpot can be based on a pari-mutuel model, probabilistic model, or any other model for creating a lottery jackpot. In one embodiment, the jackpot for the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game can be produced in accordance with the game model. In another embodiment, the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game can offer a fixed prize that can be funded by ticket sales, but does not change in size based on the number of tickets sold or ticket sales revenue. Further, the fixed prize can be based on a probabilistic model, or any other model for creating a fixed prize.
  • In yet another embodiment, the integrated lottery game randomly generates a single lottery game number. If a complete match results, the multi-jurisdictional lottery game jackpot is won. In one embodiment, the primary jackpot for the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game can also be won if there is a complete match. In another embodiment, if less than a complete match results, the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot is won. Accordingly, a pre-determined portion of the ticket sales from the integrated lottery game can be kept by the local jurisdiction for the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot. Further, the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot can be a variable prize or a fixed prize, and the prize can be based on a pari-mutuel model, probabilistic model, or any other model for creating a lottery jackpot. In one embodiment, the particular local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot that can be won can depend on a decision of the operator of the local jurisdictional lottery game concerning the prize matrix. In another embodiment, it will depend on the operator of the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. In one embodiment, a winning lottery game ticket must be purchased in the local jurisdiction offering the local jurisdictional lottery game without regard to whether the purchaser is a resident of that local jurisdiction. In another embodiment, the winning lottery game ticket must be purchased by a resident of such local jurisdiction.
  • In one embodiment, the local jurisdictions offering the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game utilize the same prize matrix. In an alternative embodiment, the participating local jurisdictions have the discretion to determine what prize matrix is utilized. Some local jurisdiction may utilize the same prize matrix while others may use a different prize matrix.
  • In an alternative embodiment, the integrated lottery game can provide fixed prizes for winning the multi-jurisdictional lottery game component. For instance, a portion of the lottery game ticket sales can be used to fund the fixed prizes for the multi-jurisdictional component of the lottery game. In one embodiment, the fixed prizes for the multi-jurisdictional component of the integrated lottery game can be won by having less than a complete match. The integrated lottery game ticket price can be set or increased to help fund these additional fixed prizes.
  • FIG. 7 illustrates yet another process 700 for providing an integrated local jurisdictional lottery game. At a process block 702, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game is provided that has a multi-jurisdictional lottery game having a multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize. A first percentage of a first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is provided from a local jurisdiction, and a second percentage of a second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is provided from a non-local jurisdiction. In one embodiment, the first percentage of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is equal to the second percentage of the second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales. In another embodiment, the first percentage of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales is different from the second percentage of the second set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales. Further, at a process block 704, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game price is provided for which the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be played. In addition, at a process block 706, an integrated local jurisdictional lottery game is provided having a local jurisdictional lottery game prize that includes a integrated local game percentage of a set of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from the local jurisdiction. Participation in the integrated local jurisdictional lottery game is restricted to entrants in the multi-jurisdictional lottery game.
  • FIG. 8 illustrates a process 800 for providing an integrated local jurisdictional lottery game with multiple prize levels. At a process block 802, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game is provided that has a multi-jurisdictional lottery game prize. At a process block 804, a multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket price is provided for which the multi-jurisdictional lottery game can be played. Further, at a process block 806, an integrated local jurisdictional lottery game is provided having a first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize that can be won according to a first set of criteria and a second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize that can be won according to a second set of criteria that is distinct from the first set of criteria. The first level local jurisdictional lottery game prize includes a first level integrated local game percentage of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from the local jurisdiction. Further, the second level local jurisdictional lottery game prize includes a second level integrated local game percentage of the first set of multi-jurisdictional lottery game ticket sales from the local jurisdiction.
  • Both the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game and the integrated local jurisdictional lottery games described above provide inducement for potential ticket purchasers within the local jurisdiction to purchase lottery game tickets because the potential purchasers know that a portion of the ticket sales revenue is kept for prizes offered by the local jurisdiction. As a result, lottery authorities in the local jurisdiction are induced to promote the sale of the multi-jurisdictional lottery game tickets and, in the case of an add-on local jurisdictional lottery game, the tickets for such local jurisdictional lottery game. Further, licensed vendors within the local jurisdiction are induced because their compensation increases according to sales and prizes won by their customers.
  • Any of the embodiments described above can be implemented with a multiple pricing arrangement. In other words, different ticket prices can be offered for participation in the add-on local jurisdictional lottery game as well as fore the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. When applied in the local jurisdictional lottery game, each ticket price is associated with a predetermined percentage of the local jurisdictional lottery game jackpot that can be won with a winning ticket. A higher ticket price is generally associated with a higher percentage of the jackpot. In one embodiment, the multiple-pricing arrangement can be configured for fixed prizes. A detailed discussion of multiple pricing is provided in U.S. Pat. No. 6,935,948, which is hereby incorporated by reference.
  • Further, any of the embodiments describe above can be implemented with a probabilistic jackpot, rather than a pure pari-mutuel model, and a third-party guarantee. A starting jackpot can be offered and backed through a third-party guarantee in the event that ticket sales do not accumulate to a sufficient degree to allow a portion of the ticket sales to fund the starting jackpot. Prize indemnity insurance or another financial contract or instrument can be utilized for the guarantee. Further, fixed prizes can be backed by a similar third-party guarantee. A detailed discussion of third-party guarantees is provided in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/766,656, filed Jan. 27, 2004, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference.
  • In addition, any of the embodiments discussed above can have a progressive feature, multiple pricing, and a third-party guarantee. A roll-over feature can also be provided to allow for a jackpot to be carried forward to future games if there is no winner.
  • Any of the embodiments described above can also include a separate instant online game or daily draw game. In one embodiment, the instant online game could be a free game that is included with the multi-jurisdictional lottery game. In another embodiment, the separate online instant game could be provided as a free addition to the local jurisdictional add-on game, for which a fee could be charged. In yet another embodiment, the local jurisdictional lottery game can be in the form of an instant online game. A detailed discussion of instant online games is provided in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 11/043,913, filed on Jan. 25, 2005, the contents of which are hereby incorporated by reference.
  • The methodologies described above are not limited to the context of a lottery. The methodologies can be extended to other games, including but not limited to, bingo, keno, card games, sports pools, or other contest-based games, or any other game which is or is predominantly a game of chance.
  • While the lottery game has been described in terms of what are presently considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiments, it is to be understood that the disclosure need not be limited to the disclosed embodiments. It is intended to cover various modifications and similar arrangements included within the spirit and scope of the claims, the scope of which should be accorded the broadest interpretation so as to encompass all such modifications and similar structures. The present disclosure includes any and all embodiments of the following claims.
