SLEEPING COVER Filed Oct. 4, 1935 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Apr. 14, 1936 UNiTEDA l .STATES PATENT OFI-lot; ...msm j Evelyn J. Echllll, Pladen, Calif. Appliultlon October 4, 1,33, Serial N0. 692,187 v z claims. Y (c1. sssm This invention relates to a cover designed for use in 'connection with babies cribs, beds or thel like, the primary object of the invention being to provide a'. co'ver which will permit of free use of the anns and legs of the infant or child sleep` ing thereunder, and will at the same time prevent the infant or child from kicking or throwing the cover from its proper covering position.
An important object of the invention is to provide a cover of this character constructed with pleats'or shirring arranged in such a way as to permit of expansion and contraction of the cover, to the end that the infant or child will be permitted to move freely under the cover, without danger of tearing or displacing the cover.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a. cover having side and end flaps adapted to fold downwardly between the mattress and l bed frame,` insuring against air `entering at this point. l
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment 4of' the invention herein disclosed,
may be made within the scope of what is claimed,
without departing 4from the spiritl of the invention. Q
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is-a perspectiveview of a babys crib equipped with a cover constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the cover, the side and end flaps thereof being extended.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the cover is indicated generally by the reference character 5, and as shown includes a body portion 6 split from a point intermediate the side edges thereof, the split starting at one end of the cover, andterminating at a point slightly past a line drawn transversely through the central portion of the body portion. 1
This split portion, which is indicated by the reference character I is reinforced by the cloth strip 'I' and has its edges 'secured by meansof the fastener 8, which includes a well known type of fastener embodying interlocking fastener sections, actuated by means of the slide 9, which acts to move the fastener sections apart, or together, according to the direction the member 9 is moved.' l
At the inner end of the split portion `I,l is an opening I0, which opening is of adiameter to l' surround the neck of the child or ini'antlyingl under the cover, so that the head of the child or infant may extend' through the cover. Thel opening I 0 is arranged with such respect to the split portion 'I, that when the split portion 1 5 is open, the opening lIl) is wider to accommodate In order to lend a certain amount of fullness to the body portion, permitting of movement of the person under the cover without danger of l tearing or damaging the cover, pleats Il are formed at opposite side edges of the body portion while'pleats I2 are formed near the opening il), the pleats I2 being arranged in a line disposed transversely of the body portion.
It will be seen that the sheet or body portion 6 is formed of upper and lower sections in substantially the same plane secured together, the two sections consisting of an upper head section and a lower body and foot section, the head section being substantially fiat when in use and the other section being pleated or gathered, as at I2, along the line of its securement to the head section to accommodate the body oi the sleeper While allowing the head section to remain substantially at.
Thus it will be seen that due to this construction, a child lying under the cover, may move without dangerof the cover binding to prevent free movement of the child.
Secured to the side edges of the body portion, are flaps i3, while aps It are secured to the ends of'the body portion, as 'clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings.
The flaps I3 and- I4, are of lengths so that 40 they will extend downwardly between the edges of the mattress, and sides and ends of the bed, with which the cover is used, thereby insuring against air entering under the cover at these points.
The reference characterl I5 designates cords or flexible ties arranged at the corners of the body portion, while the reference character I6 designates cords or iiexible ties extending from the 5 sides of the body portion, the cords I5 and I6 being designed to be tied around the corner posts and certain of the side rails of the bed or crib,y holding the cover in position.
In view of the foregoing detailed disclosure, 55
a further detailed description as' to theuse o! the device is believed to be unnecessary.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
1. A sleeping cover comprising a sheet formed of upper and lower sections in substantially the same plane secured together, the two sections consisting of an upper head section and a lower body and foot section, thehead section being substantially fiat when in use, and the other section being gathered along the line of its securement to the head portion to produce a fullness adjacent the head section to accommodate the body of the sleeper while allowing the head section to remain substantially at, the cover having a. neck opening adjacent the lower edge of the head section and a. slit extending downwardly l from said neck opening and provided with fastening means. n
2. A sleeping cover as in claim 1, and eide naps joined lto the side edges of the cover, the
said lower section being gathered along its side 10 edges to provide said fullness.
