The present invention relates to containers and more particularly to folding cartons which are adapted to be readily set up to enclose and retain articles and which may be conveniently opened for withdrawal of articles therefrom Without destroying the effectiveness of the container as to the remainder of the contents therewithin.

One object of the invention is to provide a carton which may be readily sealed on conventional sealing machines and thereafter opened by ripping the side walls along a weakened line thereby to form a tray-like cover portion hinged along a line disposed intermediate the upper and lower edges of the rear wall of the carton.

Other objects of the invention are to provide a strong, sturdy and conveniently openable container in a relatively simple and economical form. To these and other ends the invention resides in certain improvements and 'combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.

The present invention provides a convenient form cf carton which finds advantageous use for the packaging of articles such as small packs of cigarettes where it is desired to provide a. convenlent and attractive container in which the individual packs of cigarettes or other articles are retained in a readily accessible manner, as for example, on a shelf or table. The present carton permits a number of small packages to be readily enclosed and retained free from dust until sold by the retailer," after 'which the carton may be readily opened in the home where the individual packages may be removed from time to time, as desired. Due to the weakened. line formed intermediate the top and bottom edges of the carton, opening the carton along xsuch.-v weakened line will form a tray-like lower 'portion and a anged cover portion arranged to freely swing on the lower wall of the lower tray portion. In this manner, a relatively sturdy container is formed which has a generally smooth exterior and is thereby well adapted to receive an attractive printing design thereon simulating the ordinary small wood chests that are employed to contain small articles, such as cigarette packs and similarly packaged. commodities.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the carton is formed from a blank of folding bcxboard, indicated as a whole at 5. The bottom panel 6 carried at its edges a front wall panel 'I, rear wall panel' and side wall panels 9 and I0, each of which are defined from the bottom panel by the score lines indicated.

The front, rear and side walls are secured together by attaching flaps, indicated at II, I2, I3, and [4, which, in the present instance, are located on the lateral edges of the respective front and rear walls 1 and 8.

A top closure panel I5 is preferably provided as an extension on the rear wall 8. This top is provided with a flap I6. The rear wall 8, the top closure panel I5 and the flap I6 are defined from each other by the score lines I'l and I8.

In order to provide forthe formation of a flanged cover upon opening. the lled carton, the front wall, the side walls and the front wall attaching flaps are provided with lines of perforations, or otherwise weakened lines, as indicated at IB; 2D, 20; 2|, 2|; and 22, 22. When the container has been set up as indicated in Fig. 1, it may be opened by running some instrument, such as a letter opener or thumb Inail, along the weakened lines until the top portion of the container has been entirely broken loose from the lower portion, whereupon the coverthus formed, as indicated at Fig. Zmay be swung back along the hinge line 23 formed by scoring the rear Wa1l8. For the purpose of forming a closed joint along the lateral edges of the top panel I5, aps 24, 24 are preferably provided on the side walls 9 and Ill which flaps are secured, as by means of adhesive, to the underside of the top panel I5. See 'particularly Fig. 2.y

The flap I6 on the front edge of the top panel I5 is preferably formed of such a, length as to extend beyond the severed portion 'Ia on the front wall whereby the flap I6 will overlap the inner surface of the lower section `.of the front wall panel 1. The extremities of lthe exposed edge portion of the flap I6 are preferably rounded to facilitate insertion of this flap within the lower portion of the carton. 'I'his flap also serves to prevent undue lateral shifting movement of the flanged cover pQrtion when the cover is in closed position. v

In setting up and packing the carton, the walls 'l and` 8 are first moved to upright position, after which the attaching aps II, I2, I3, and I4 are folded inwardly at right angles thereto. The side walls 9 and lli are then raised to upright position and, at this time, or prior thereto, adhesive is applied so asvto cause the entire portion of the attaching iiaps to adhere to the walls 9 and I0. It

will be noted that care should be taken to cause adherence of the portions IIa and I3a with the portion 9a and, similarly, cause adherence of the portions i2a and I4a with the portion lila, this being necessary to properly form the flanged cover by severing walls along the weakened lines.

The carton, as thus far set up, is now ready for the reception of its contents. When the desired articles have been packed within the carton the next step is-to fold inwardly the flaps 24, 24 and to apply adhesive on the upper surface of said flaps so that adherence will be effected between them and the underside of the panel I5. Adhesive is also applied to either the outer surface of the flap I6 or the inner surface of the portion 'la of the front wall 1 to effect adherence between this portion 1a and the flap. Care is exercised not to apply any adhesive to the flap I 8 which is not overlapped by the portion 1a of the front Wall 1 as adherence between the ap I6 and the lower portion of the front wall 1 would prevent ready opening of the carton.

The container, as thus formed, is illustrated at Fig. 1.

As mentioned before, the containerl is opened by breaking the front and side walls along the perforated lines, whereupon the container may be opened as indicated at Fig. 2.

In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, the container as a whole is indicated at 25 and comprises a bottom panel 25, a front wall panel 21, rear wall panel 28 and side wall panels 29 and 30. vAs in the previously described form, attaching aps 3l, 32, 33, and 34 are provided on side walls 29 and 30 for the purpose of attaching the front, rear and side walls together.

A top closure panel 35 extends from the outer edge of rear wall panel 28, this flap 35 being formed with an extension flap 3B on its outer edge. Score lines 31 and 38 separate the top panel 35 from the panel 28 andthe flap 36.

In order to provide for the formation of a flanged cover upon opening a iilled carton, the front wall, the side walls and the front wall attaching flaps are provided with lines of perforations or similarly weakened lines, as indicated at 39, 39; 40, 40; 4I, 4I; and 42; 42. When the container has been set up as indicated in Fig. 4,

-it may be opened by running an instrument along the weakened lines until the top portion of the container has been entirely broken loose lfrom the lower portion of three of its sides, whereby the cover thus formed may be swung back along the hinge line 43 formed by scoring the rear wall 28.

Flaps 44, 44 are provided on the side walls 29 and 30 for the purpose of forming a closed joint along the lateral edges of the top panel 35, these flaps 44, 44 being secured to the panel 35 by adhesive. See Fig. 4.

" In this form of the invention, it is desirable to provide a container which may be partially set .up at the carton factory and then collapsed to a fiat condition for shipment to the user. For this purpose, diagonally disposed score lines 45, 45 are impressed in the side walls 29 and 30. See Fig. 6. When the flaps 3|, 32, 33, and 34 are secured to the front and rear Walls, as shown in Fig. 5, the front and rear walls may bevcollapsed fiat over the bottom 2B and the central portion of the side walls will swing outwardly with the diagonal portions at the ends folded to lie against an adjacent portion of the side walls, all as clearly shown in Fig..5. Ihe cover panel, 35, will then assume the position shown in Fig. 5 in which it overlies the bottom 26 and front Wall 21.

The carton, upon reaching the user, may be opened up for filling, after which the closure is sealed in a manner similar to that explained in connection with the first described form of the invention.

The carton, after being lled with merchandise and sealed, as above stated, may be opened by breaking the front and side walls away along their perforated lines so that the contents will assume the appearance shown in Fig. 4.

It is to be noted .that the diagonal score lines in the severed portions of the side walls which are secured to the closure will become inoperative by reason of the fact that the ilaps 44 are adhesively secured to the under side of the closure panel. i

T he diagonal score lines in the lower part or tray of the container in its final form will not be operative so as to cause outward swinging of the side Walls so long as the tray portion of the container is lled with articles.

From the foregoing, it is apparent that the present invention provides an economical form of carton, which, while comprising relativelyfew parts, will be effective for the purpose intended. That is, it will satisfactorily enclose the contents packed therein until such time as it is desired to open the container, whereupon, by simply breaking the walls along the weakened lines, a container is formed which has a sturdy, flanged cover portion hinged on the lower portion or container proper.

'While the present description sets forth a pre- -ferred embodiment of the invention, numerous changes may be made in the construction without departing from the spirit of the invention, and it is therefore desired that the present embodiment be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being hadv to the appended claims rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.

I claim:

1. A carton comprising a bottom panel, a front wall, a rear wall and two side walls formed as extensions on the edges of the bottom panel, a top panel formed on the outer edge of the rear wall, a flap on the outer edge of the top panel, attaching flaps of substantially the same width as said walls attached tothe end of one and adhesively secured to the inner face of the other of the'walls at each corner ofthe carton, to hold all of said walls in upright position, flaps on the extremities of the side walls .attached to the under side -of the top panel, the rear wall being scored along a line intermediate its top and bottom to provide a hinge, the front and side-walls and the attaching aps being respectively provided with a weakened line of perforations in substantial alignment with the hinge line in the rear wall whereby, when the carton walls and the attached lflaps are severed along their weakened lines, a flanged closure is provided which may be opened by swinging same rearwardly upon the hinge line formed in the rear wall.

2. A carton comprising a bottom panel, front, rear and side Wall panels, attaching ilaps connecting the said walls at the corners to form the main body of the carton, a top closure panel hinged to the rear Wall panel, attaching flaps on the upper edges of the side wall panels adhesively secured to the underside of the top closure panel, the rear wall panel having a secondary hinge line and the side and front wall panels and the corner attaching flaps having severable lines, all of said lines being positioned alike intermediate the top and bottom panels whereby, when the side and front Wall panels and the corner attaching iiaps are broken along their severable lines, a flanged closure is provided which may be opened by swinging the same on said secondary hinge line, and a iiap on the free edge of the top closure panel lying inside the front wall panel, extending beyond the severable line formed therein and attached to the front wall panel between its severable line and its upper edge.

3. A carton comprising a bottompanel, a front Wall, a rear wall and two side walls formed as extensions on the edges of the `bottom panel, a top panel formed on the outer edge of the rear Wall, a flap on the outer edge of the top panel, attaching flaps of substantially the same width as the said walls, attached to the ends of the front and rear walls, and. adhesively secured to the inner faces of the side walls at each corner 0f the carton to hold all of said walls in upright position, flaps on the extremities of the side walls attached to the underside of the top panel, the` rear wall being scored along a line intermediate its top and bottom to provide a hinge, the front and side walls andthe attaching flaps being respectively provided with weakened lines of perforations in substantial alignment with the hinging line in the rear wall whereby, when the earton walls and the attaching flaps are severed along their weakened lines, a flanged closure is provided which may be opened by swinging same rearwardly upon the hinge line formed in the rear wall.
