2forconnecting `body partV I, to a source of water l. The nozzle includes a tubular mouthpiece I having its inner` face or inner wall formed of a tapered rear portion` graduallyv decreasing in diametertoutwardly and a `tapered forward por- `tion .which Ialso gradually decreases in diameter outwardly. The said4 forward portion is of materiallyygreater length .than the said rear portion fand terminates atthe outer end of the `monthj piecef `'llhesaid rear portion startsat the inner endof .the mouthpiece andmerges at its forward end into .the rear end of .the said forward portion; The diameters of the saidrear `portion'are greater than the diameters of the said forward portion.
The inner face or wallrof the mouthpiece 3` `serves as outlet for the spout pipe I. The rear portion of the inner face "ofthe `moui'fhpiece `constitut a f'rustc-fhollov'A cone indicated .at I. The forward portion of the inner face of the mouthpiece I consti-tutes a" frusto-hollow cone upon a. greater slant l 'tofthe diameters of the said forward portion with respect to the i diameters of Ithe said rear portion.
, Arranged at the outer end of `the-spout pipe I and encompassedby the mouthpiece 3 isa regulating element 5a, which is attached to pipe i by fa pluralltypfwings 6. The regulator 5a consists of a forward solid cone 1, a rear solid cone 8 and an intermediate coupling part 9 of unifomr diameter. L The cones 1, Bare oppositely disposed and their bases merge into the coupling part 9. The cone I is of materially greater length or height than the cone 8, and preferably the length or height` of cone 4I will be two and one-half times greater than the length or height of cone 8. `The conel' extends towards the outlet of piece 3. Thewings fare integral with the cone `-B and are attached to the -spout pipe I"by the "screws I0." The wings are streamlined in order tocause a minimum resistance to the now of "mouthpiece` J. VThe cone 8 extends towardsthe `spout pipe I. The cones I.8`constitute regulators for thewater spout discharged from mouthlwaterlthrough the nome. Revolubly mounted on the spout pipe I is an adjuster in the form of an annular casing I3 having its inner face provided with female threads I2 in which the heads II of the screws I are positioned. The casing I3 at its forward end merges into the rear end of the mouthpiece 3. Attached to and encompassing the casing I3 is a regulating ring or sleeve I4. A packing I5 is interposed between they casing I3 and the spout pipe I.
The nozzle includes a spray-diffuser comprising a circular flange I6 formed integral with the outer face of mouthpiece 3 at the inner end of the latter and a shiftable spray controlling collar I1 mounted on the casing I3. The flange I6 1I is formed with a sharp edge I8. The collar I1 -is provided with a sharp edge I9, which encompasses the edge I8. The edges I8, I9 co-act to form a water discharging slit. The collar I1 carries a ring-like packing acting to prevent I the passage of water to the slit when the edges I8,
- I9'are inV close relation.
The forward end surface of the collar I1 is formed with a-cavity 2| having its bottom of dome-shape contour leading from edge I3 for I the purposev of increasing the width of the slit and also to forni a deflector for the water spray '-{Figure 2).' Y The water is supplied to the slit provided by the edges I8, I9 through spaced rows 22, 23 of elongated spaced openings disn posedcircumferentially of the forward end terminal portion of the casing I3. The openings of vone row are staggered with respect to the lopenings of the other row.
The collar I1 in proximity toits forward end has an annular peripheral groove in which is mounted a resilient ring 24 for gripping purposes when adjusting the collar I1. The outer diameter' of ring 24 is larger than any other part of the nozzle. A flanged nut 24a` revoluble and I slidable upon the casing I3 extends into the rear end of and threadedly engages with the inner face of the collar I1 for a purpose to be referred to. l
As shown in Figures 1, 2 and 4 the spout pipe I I, in every position ofthe nozzle is arranged against the threads|2 and thus prevents the formation of water whirls.
By revolving the sleeve I4 it is possible to adjust the solid cones 1, 8 relative to the hollow cones 4, 5 to any position ranging from that shown in Figure 1, where the nozzle is shown completely closed to that shown in Figure 4 where the nozzle is completely open.
By shifting 'the collar I1, it is possible to u change the width of the passage formed by the slit between the edges I8, I9, and whichmakes it possible to keep the pipe shaped water screen together or to change it to one of fiat circular n form. Y
The staggered position of the openings 22, 23 provides for a complete uniform supply of water to the slit formed between the edges I8, I9, and the water will be completely shut ofi to the slit by packing 204 when edges I8, I9 are arranged in close relation.
A packing l is interposed between the collar I1 and casing I3 and is engageable by the nut 24a for making tight the space between casing I3 and collar I1. If the nozzle happens to fall to the ground, or if it hits against a wall, the
ring 24 will serve as a protection.
A water spout may be produced with or without the water yspray screen, and the latter may u be' produced and regulated independently of the former. The spout may be produced and regulated independently of producing the screen.
Owing to the design and arrangement of the regulating cones, it is possible to let out a water spout, even if the nozzle is only partly open; in 5 such case the spout is given a very wide range. When the water is streaming out. the outcoming water is conducted and kept together by the slim hollow cone 5 as shown in Figure 4.
The structure as described and shown pro- 10 vides a water spout nozzle surrounded by an annular spray nozzle, by which it is possible to produce a more or less flat cone of water spray as a screen between the person handling the nozzle and the source of gases. With or without 15 this spray feature it is possible, by means of the structure, to produce a water spout of any desired size, due to the fact that this invention has as an element thereof a regulator having a pair of solid cones for co-acting with a pair of 20 hollow cones for the regulation of the water spout. The ratio between the heights of the solid cones is `l:2.5, the longest solid cone beingv situated toward the outlet` of the nozzle. That one of the two hollow cones (into which reaches 26 the longest of the solid cones which serves as a regulator) situated nearest the outlet is only slightly slanting, whereas the one situated furl ther inside is more slanting. In shifting a solid cone from one position to another inside a hol- I0 low cone it is possible, on the Ione hand, to cut oi completely the water spout, and, on the other hand, to regulate it so that a continuous stream of water is produced, which, when the nozzle is only slightly open, does not touch the inner wall Il of the nozzle, but, when the nozzle is completely open, is conducted along and kept together by this Wall. The function of the piece connecting the two solid cones is to calm down the stream of water, evenly distributed at the inner wall, so o that no whirls can occur when the water passes the outer'solid cone.
The water screen `is controlled by the collar I1 which co-acts with the ilange on the mouthpiece to form the annular slit for passage of the a Water to form the screen and the flow of water through the slit may be shut off or regulated by this collar. In order to secure an absolutely even distribution of the water when it approaches this slit, and in order also to obtain a completely continuous and evenly cone-shaped water surface at the spray-diffusing nozzle the openings 22, 23 are provided and disposed in the manner aforesaid.
The spray-.diffusing collar controls the water u surface, guides the water screen when the spraydiffusing nozzle is completely open, and also regulates the angle of exit, as well as the degree of diffusion of the water screen. It is thus possible to obtain not only a completely even watedr screen, 00 but also, by adjusting the angle of exit of the water, to change the original pipe-shaped spout to a water screen of flat circular form. 'Ihe cavity closely joining the sharp edge of the spray diffusing collar also produces a certain whirling 05 of the water, so that it is possibleY to obtain a very ne diiusion, which can repulse gases hitting the water screen, extinguish re, and provide a complete protection for the person handling the nozzle. 10
What I claim is: In a nozzle, a tubular body part adapted for connection at its rear end with a water supply. a regulating element disposed adjacent to the outer end of said body part and supported from 1| said body part, a mouth piece integral at its rear end withthe outer end of the casing and provided at its` inner end with a laterally extending casing andhaving its forward end edge formed `with an inwardly `extending rearwardly directed curved surface terminating in a sharp edge por- 4 i n 2,218,411 f the lattenan adjustable casing encompassing tion spaced from the .inner face of the collar,
said sharpedge portion `o1 the collar coasting.
`with the sharp edge portion of the ange to form a Water discharging slit to provide a water shield, and a ringflike packing seated in said end edge rearwardly of and in juxtaposition to the vsaid `sharp edge portion of the collar to arrest the passage of the `water to said edge portions when `the edge portions are disposed in close proximity.
