Description

Dec. 3, 1940. G, F MA'YFlELD 2,223,695
- LID LIFTER FOR CONTAINERS Filed ont. 11, 195e f flHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII- Z215 George I ATTO R N EYS Patented Dec. 3, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
The invention relates to cover` lifting devices and more especially to lid lifters for containers.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the same is associated with a lid of a box, those employed for holding shoe polish, ointment, paste or any other contents, and will enable the quick opening of the lid or cover without the necessity of the use of a separate instrument or prying element for so doing, the device bein-g of novel construction.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, wherein the construction thereof is novel and on attachment to a container will not come in contact with the contents thereof and is handy for easy manipulation so that the lid or cover can be removed with ease and dispatch, the contents of the container being sealed in that the lid or the body thereof is not mutilated in the attachment of the device thereto.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character, which is simple in its make-up, thoroughly reliable and efiicient in operation, easy of manipulation., assuring the removal of the lid or cover from the body of .the box or container with dispatch, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a container showing the device constructed in accordance with the invention applied and ready for use.
Figure 2 is a view similar to Figure 1 showing the device adjusted for the raising or lifting of the lid or cover from the body of the container.
Figure 3 is a top plan View.
Figure 4 is a perspective View of the device.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the device prior to the bending thereof into proper shape for use.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A designates generallya portion of the body of a container and B its removable lid or cover,l respectively. The lid or cover B is telescopically fitted onto the open mouth portion of the body A and is frictionally held thereon in closing position. Struck outwardly from the rim side I 0 of the lid or cover B is an annular flange or ledge IIv of a rivet. This pivot I2 swingingly connects the device constituting the present invention with the said lid or cover at the ledge or flange II thereof.
The device comprises a lever made from a` single piece of inherently rigid material and is denoted generally at C. The material from which the lever C is made is cut into substantially S shape forming a pivot ear I3 disposed at substantially right angles to a linger hold or finger-engaging ear I4, the ears I3 and I4 being offset reversely to each other at opposite sides of the said lever while intermediate of these ears is an outstruck substantially V-shaped cam portion I5. The ear I3 receives the pivot I2and such lever C swings on the axis constituted by the said pivot I2. The ear I3 receiving the pivot I2 is the terminal of a slightly upwardly bent portion I'I to permit attachment to the lip or ange of the lid and at the same time with the proper bend which gives the wedge action in separating the lid from the box.
Struck outwardly from the body A of the container is an annular laterally sloping flange or ledge I6 with which engages the cam I5- of the lever C when manipulated in one direction on the placement of the cover o-r lid B upon thebody A so that said lid or cover will be lifted or loosened in its telescopic engagement over the body A of the container and in this way assuring easy removal of the lid or cover from the body with dispatch. Normally the lever C is in a position to avoid engagement with the iiange I6 on the body A of the container and by reason of the pivotal mounting of the ear I3 upon the flange II the lid or cover is not mutilated so that a perfect sealing of the contents of the container will be assured when the said lid or cover is frictionally held engaged thereon.
What is claimed is:
A container comprising an external peripherally flanged body, an external peripherally flanged lid telescopically fitted upon said body for separation of the peripheral flanges of said body and lid, the nange on the body being laterally inclined relative thereto, a substantially S-shaped lever forming a substantially V-shaped cam for wedging engagement between the iianges on the body and said lid when moved therebetween, a pivot connecting one end of said lever to the ange on the lid for the swinging of the V-shaped cam in a plane parallel with the plane of the ilange on the lid and between and away from the flanges on said body and lid, and a linger-engaging ear formed at the other end of the lever and depending below the flange on the body in spaced relation to the said body when the V-shaped cam is engaged between the flanges on the body and lid.
