Description

S. A. BOSTWIGK. Combined Drill and Bit Stock.
No. 225,682. Patented Mar. 23, 1880..
I1. PETERS. PNOTO UTHOGRAPNEK WASHINGTON, D C.
I 2 V 2 I l"- U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SEYMOUR A. BOSTWIOK, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO HAYES LONGEE, OF SAME PLACE.
COMBINED DRlLL AND BIT-STOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 225,682, dated March 23, 1880. Application filed September 1 30, 1879.
To all whom t1? may concern:
Be it known that I, SEYMOUR A. BOST- WICK, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Drill and Bit-Stock, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
In many cases, in the use of the ordinary bit-stock, it is desirable that the tool held in the stock should be capable of being rotated as a drill without turning the handle of the stock.
To this end this invention consists in the combination, with a bitstock, of suitable gearing attached thereto, whereby the holding part of thestock and the tool contained therein can be rotated without turning the handle of the stock, and of a device whereby the holding part of the stock, while still attached to the handle, is rendered capable of being rotated thereby, or of being rotated by the gearing while the handle of the stock remains stationary.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal sectional view of the holding part of the stock with the gearing attached thereto, and of a part of the handle of the stock. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal sectional view of the device whereby the holding part of the stock is enabled to be rotated by the handle; and Fig. 3, is an end view of the collar or sleeve L, forming part of said device.
In these several figures the same letters refer to the same parts.
H is the handle of the stock, only part of which is shown, and which is made in the ordinary bent form, and N is a shaft, which is inserted at one end into the handle H, and is capable of rotating therein, and at the other end is provided with a suitable device for holding the tool which is to be used. Upon this shaft is rigidly fixed a bevel-gear wheel, A, which gears at right angles with another gearwheel, 13, which is screwed or otherwise secured to the side of the handle H, as shown at V, Fig. 1, and is provided with a crank or any other suitable device whereby it can be rotated.
In order that this shaft N may be rotated by the handle of the bit-stock in the ordinary manner, or can be rotated by the gearin g while the handle remains stationary, the said shaft is connected to the handle of the stock by any suitable clutch, and as a suitable device for this purpose I can adopt that shown in the drawings. When this device is used the handle H is provided with two jaws, through both of which the shaft N passes, and upon this shaft, between these two jaws, is rigidly fixed a toothed wheel, t. Pivoted to these jaws, on opposite sides of this toothed wheel, are two pawls a n, the outer ends of which bear upon the fieriphery of the wheel t, and when depressed pass between the teeth of said wheel, and the inner ends of which pawls are forced apart or outward by'a spring, so that the normal action of these pawls'is to lock the toothed wheel to the handle H, so that the shaft will be rotated by turning the handle of the stock, and when the wheel is so locked the inner ends of the pawls project slightly from the handle. In order to disengage these pawls from the teeth of this wheel t, a sleeve or collar is fitted loosely upon the handle H just beyond the ends of the pawls, and is provided with two projections, c and d, from its end, which can be brought over the inner ends of the pawls, so as to depress them and disengage the other ends of the pawls from the teeth of the toothed wheel 2. These projections may be pins inserted into the endof the collar, or may be produced by cutting away a part of the collar, as shown in Fig. 3.-
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
The combination of the handle H, shaft N, bevebtoothed Wheel A, rigidly connected to the shaft, toothed wheel B, toothed wheel t, spring-pawls a a, and loose collar L, provided with projections cand d, overlapping the ends of the pawls, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
SEYMOUR A. BOS'IWIGK.
