SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,149, dated April 12, 1881. Application filed September 30, 1880. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FERDINAND A. KIT- TELL, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid- Bedsteads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is an end view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of a series of such bedsteads. Fig. 3 is a detail.

The object of the present invention is twofold-first, to provide for the comfortable removal of a patient, without handling, from his bed to a cot, chair, or commode; and, secondly, all the beds in a hospital-ward may be so constructed or adapted that all the occupants may receive the benefits of my said invention, and this, too, with but a single apparatus.

To these ends my invention consists in the construction and combinationof devices. substantially as hereinafter fully set forth, whereby the above objects are accomplished.

The first object is attained in the following manner, reference being had to Figs. 1 and 3.

I have the ordinary bedstead, consisting of the bed-fra me a a, posts I) b, movableframe c c, d d, cords e, pulleys or sheaves f, roller 9, gearing, and crank. The roller 9 is journaled in the ends of an extra superposed frame, It h, as shown, and to this frame h h, I also attach the gearing and crank, as well as the cords e and pulleys f. Frame h h is set on frame d d in guided ways, and rests upon rollers or grooved wheels 1'. Attached to the bedframe, in any suitable manner, are the extension-strips k k, braced together, or provided with devices for bracing, and these extend out horizontally in line with the end pieces of the fixed top frame, d d, and are held up by the extra posts at m, as shown. The whole frame is m m may be so constructed as to fold back against the bedstead proper, or to telescope into it, or to be altogether removable or permanently attached. Stops a may be placed at the points shown, to prevent accident in removing the patient. Thus constructed, the patient maybe elevated 0n the movable frame 0 c by means of its cross-bands, and then,

to provide a means whereby several or gently pushing upon the superposed frame h h, or pulling, the occupant is easily and comfortably moved laterally from over the bed, and may be deposited on a cot for removal without pain or uneasiness, or placed on a chair for airing, or upon acommode. In order to permit this lateral movement, the ends of movable frame 0 0 have two ormore studs or projections, p p, and the grooved posts b b are correspondingly cut away from the groove at a point, say twelve inches above the mattress, so that upon reaching that level no obstacle exists to the lateral movement of frame 0 0.

The second object of this invention is accomplished as follows:-

Fig. 2 shows a number of beds side by side in a hospital-ward. The top frames of these beds have lateral extensions which interlock in any suitable manner, so that they together form a continuous way. On this way travels the superposed frameh h, and all its described appurtenances of movable frame, cross-bands, pulleys, cords, roller, and gearing. Constructed thus, each bedstead having its postsgrooved and notched for the entrance of the studded ends of frame 0 0, when the attendant has finished operating on one patient the crossbands can be readily removed, and the whole movable apparatus pushed over on the ways and set for another patient; or a patient can be moved in a few moments from one bed to another at the other end of the ward without the slightest pain or discomfort. The superposed frame h h is held in lateral position by the pins 8, passing through lugs t t placed, respectively. on the fixed top frame, 61 d, and the superposed frame h h, as shown.

I claim as my invention The combination of the vertically-movable frame 0 0, having projections 10 19, posts b, grooved and notched, as shown, fixed frame (I d, and a superposed frame, h h, resting upon the frame 61 cl, and provided with means for elevating said frame a a, substantially as described.
