Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL MORRIS, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
SHIRT-STUD.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,884, dated July 26, 1859.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAMEL MORRIS, of Bangor, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented an Improved Shirt-Stud; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, of Which- Ii igure I is a side view, and Fig. Q a trans verse section of such article.
Common shirt studs when made of gold or metal are very apt to crock or soil a shirty Where they may be in contact with it. To avoid this, I construct my improved shirt stud of a gold or a metallic front or facing combined with an insulating or anti-soiling guard constructed not only of mother of pearl," tortoise shell or some other suitable material, which will not crock or spot those parts ot the shirt with Which it may come in contact, but in such manner as to insulate the metallic facing from the shirt. In this way, the article when in a shirt or looked at in front has the appearance of a common `gold stud.
In the drawings, A, exhibits the gold or metallic facing formed with a shank, b, eX- tending from its center, While, B, is the insulating or antisoilin0' guard which should be constructed of the orm shown in the ligures, that is, as a tlat spool formed with two heads or disks e, f, united by a cylindrical body, g, the latter being perforated axially for the reception of the shank, o. The parts A, and, B, are fastened together by upsetting or riveting the shank upon the latter guard, B, or a Small plate or disk, arranged on it as shown in Fig. 2.
I do not claim a` shirt stud made entirely ot metal or entirely of a material which will not tarnish, or crock, but I claim The improved manufacture of shirt stud as constructed with a metallic facing, A, and an anti-soiling Spool or guard, B, arranged and combined together substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my signature.
