This invention relates to improvements in a garment adapted to hold an absorbentpad to Aprovide an improved means for diapering an infant.

One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a garment which may be utilized on the body of .a baby to absorb urine and feces in a novel manner.

It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the garment may also be utilized by incontinent adults but since the greater use of the same will be in connection with infants, the device will be so described.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a base member to take the position of a diaper upon the body of a vbaby together with a waterproof pouch on the outside of the base member and an absorbent pad in the pouch, there being an opening through the base member and through the pouch for direct access between the perineal parts of the infant and the absorbent pad. In such a combination I provide a novel arrangement whereby a portion of the base member is pulled tightly into the crease between the babys buttocks whereby to prevent urine trickling down on the lower back portion and buttocks of the baby when it is lying on its back and thus avoiding the formation of a rash or other disadvantageous results.

Another object of the present invention is to provide a narrow string of elastic extending from the waist band of the baby in the centralfreyar portion of the base member and down along the crease between the babys buttocks to a point adjacent but slightly spaced from the rear edge of the registering openings through the base member and the pouch whereby a funnel is formed at that point for catching urine which has a tendency to run rearwardly especially when the baby is lying down.

Other objects and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawings and description, and the essential features set forth in the accompanying claims.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of the garment of Fig. l spread out in flat position which it would actually never assume but which provides for a clearer description of the garment. The view of Fig. 2 is a plan view taken on the inside of the garment;

Fig. 3 is a fragmental View of the garment of Figs. l and 2 with' the garment in approximately the position it would assume on the body of an V2 infant but looking into the garment so as to look downwardly along the rear inside face thereof; while Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmental sectional view taken along the line #2 4 of Fig. 2, but showing the parts in the actual position they would assume .on the body of an infant.

The garment here shown comprises a base member usually of cloth as indicated at I0 and generally of AI-form. This member is provided with front tabs Ita and rear tabs Ilib which are adapted to meet about the Waist of the infant and to be ysecu-red by a safety pin Il or other securing device. Along the waist line portions a hem I2 may be formed and a thin piece of elastic I3 may be firmly attached to the base member at the points I4 so as to gather the garment snugly around the Waist of an infant and adapt the garment to nt infants .having various dimensions about the waist line. The central portion of the garment is adapted to pass through the babys crotch and elastic bands I6 are provided in the legs-gripping portion of the garment, these bands being stretched and attached at the points I1 so that when released the garment is gathered together and fits snugly about the legs of the infant. On the outside of the garment is secured a waterproof pouch I8 of iiexible material such as Vinylite resin. This pouch extends from approximately the waist line of the baby in front to a position somewhat below the waist line of the baby in the rear as indicated at Ita. Registering openings are provided at I9 in both the base member I0 and the pouch i8 so as to provide direct access between the perineal parts of the infant and an absorbent pad 2t which is inserted inside the pouch. The forward edge of this opening is indicated at iQa and the rearward edge at |919. Preferably, the opening I9 extends substantially the entire width of the narrow crotchtraversing portion of the garment as clearly indicated in Fig. 2.

The present invention provides a thin strip of elastic 2| which is stretched lightly and secured to the garment at the point 22 in the middle of the rear waist line and secured at 23 to the member I approximately one-half to three-quarters of an inch rearwardly of the edge iSb of the opening. A line of stitching 26 extends along the center line of the elastic cord to secure it to the base of garment I 0. It results from the above construction that when the garment is in the approximate position of Fig. 1, secured on the bodylof the infant, the parts take the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The elastic 2l is stretched between the rear waist line of the baby downwardly along the buttocks and the elastic 2l by its pull exerted along a narrow line causes the garment to t snugly into the crease between the babys buttocks. At the same time, the fact that the fastening 23 of the elastic 2l is spaced from the edge I9?) of the opening through the garment causes the loose material at 25 to be kicked up in a funnel shaped form as indicated at 2S. The material thus follows the body of the baby all .along the buttocks and up into the perineum of the baby so that there is no possibility of urine running rearwardly along the lower back portions and buttocks of the baby when it is lying on its back. This feature is particularly advantageous in connection with girl babies where it is quite usual to find a bad rash on the lower portion of the back and on the buttocks.

What I claim is:

l. In a diapering garment wherein a base sheet member secured to the wearers body supports an absorbent pad adjacent the perineum of the wearer, said garment having a sheet member positioned to rest below the buttocks of the wearer, and a pouch for said pad having an opening through said sheet member, the improvement comprising a tension member fastened near the upper rear portion of the garment and extending downwardly and secured to said base sheet member near the crotch of the wearer and near the rear end of said opening and so positioned and arranged that it holds said base sheet member in the crease between the buttocks of the wearer.

In a diapering garment wherein a base sheet member has portions secured about the wearers waist line and has a portion extending through the wearers crotch, and an absorbent pad held by said base sheet member adjacent the perineum of the wearer, the improvement comprising a narrow elastic cord secured to said base sheet member under tension, one end of said cord attached near the waist line in the central rear portion of the garment, and the other end of said cord attached to the portion of the base sheet member resting below the buttocks of the wearer and so positioned and arranged that it holds said base sheet member in the crease between the buttocks of the wearer.

In a diapering garment wherein a base sheet member has portions secured about the wearers waist line and has a portion extending through the wearers crotch, and wherein a flexible waterproof pouch is carried on the outside of said base member, there being registering openings provided through said base member and said pouch opposite the perineum of the wearer, and an absorbent pad in said pouch, the improvement comprising an elastic cord attached under tension to said base member, one end attached near the waist line in the central rear portion thereof, and the other end attached near but spaced from the rear edge of said opening and centrally between the buttocks of the wearer.

In a diapering garment wherein a base sheet member has portions secured about the wearers waist line and has a portion extending through the wearers crotch, and wherein a exible waterproof pouch is carried on the outside of said base member, there being registering openings provided through said base member and said pouch opposite the perineum of the wearer, the rear edges of said openings extending sideways of the wearers body, said rear edges being secured together along their entire length, and an absorbent pad in said pouch, the improvement comprising an elastic cord attached under tension to said base member, one end attached near the waist line in the central rear portion thereof, and the other end attached near but spaced from the rear edge of said opening and centrally between the buttocks of the wearer.
