NORMAN mm 5N5) I 1 if B ATTORNEY Patented Dec. 25, 1951 OFFICE FOLDING TABLE WITH CROSSLEGS AND BRACES Norman Krasney, Los Angeles, Calif.
Application September 8, 1945, Serial No. 615,235 3 Claims. (01. 311-83) An object of this invention is to provide a collapsible table including a table and supports hingedly connected to opposite portions thereof and arranged to be selectively moved into erect positions when the table is in use and to be folded downwardly against the bottom of. the table when the table is notin use.
.Another object is to provide in a collapsible table structure a channelled guide on the bottom of the table supports hingedly connected to oppcsite portions of the table so as to bedisposed erectly and fiatwise of the table when respectively extended and collapsed, braces hinged tosaid supports and a cross-head hinged to said braces and slidable in the channel on the table.
Another object is to provide a collapsible table structure including a table having a guide on its bottom, supports hinged to and near the ends of the table and braces connecting said supports with the slide movable on said guides for selectively holding said supports in erect position and in collapsed position against the bottom of the table.
I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention in the accompanying drawings, subject to modification, within the scope of the appended claims, without departingfrom the spirit of my invention. In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a collapsible table embodying my invention with suitable associated benches;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same in partially collapsed positions and up-side-down form as when the table and benches are being assembled or disassembled;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the table an benches arranged in compact form for packing or transportation from one to another location;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the folded table;
Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view in perspective of the table as when partially extended for use;
Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view on line 6-6 of Fig. 5;
Fig. '7 is a fragmentary view of the unit disclosed in Fig. 5 as seen on the line 1-1;
Fig. 8 is. a bottom plan view of a bench as when it is collapsed;
Fig. 9 is a fragmentary elevation of the table;
Fig. 10 is a fragmentary section of one of the table supports and a brace therefor; and
Fig. 11 is a section on line Il--|l of Fig. 9.
Briefly described, a table embodying my improvements includes a foldable table A adapted for use in connection with one or more but pref- .2 erably two similarly foldable benches B, B of suitable type and adapted to be arranged as shown in Fig. I. Said table and bench units are adapted to be compactly packaged for transportation from one location to another and to occupy a minimum space.
The table unit A is approximately butnot necessarily twice the combined width of the bench units B, B so that when collapsed and arranged in a package as shown in Fig. 3 the top I of table A and the seats 2. 2 of benches B, B will abut and the outer edges thereof will be approximately flush. Table unit A has legs or end supports 3, 3 and benches B have similar legs or supports 4, 4 which are formed of X shape and embody angularly connected members 3a and 4a, respectively. It is pointed out that the crossed form of leg provides an inherently rigid type of construction free from the liability to become loose after a short period of use as with single vertical fold? able legs. The upper extremities of members 3a are hingedly secured to the lower side of the table top I as at 5, and the upper extremities of the members 4a are hingedly, secured to the lower sides of the seats 2 by means of hinges B, in such a manner that the supports 3 and 4 may swing inwardly into flatwise positions as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The legs are crossed by means of a cut out in each forming what is termed a mortised joint.
Outwardly of the table supports 3 cleats 1 are attached in such positions on the table board so that the sides thereof will abut the supports 3 when they are extended as shown in Figs. land 2, and said cleats will serve to limit the outward thrust of the supports 3 beyond a predetermined extent. Similarly the bench seats 2 are: provided with cleats 8 adjacent and for abutment with the supports 4. Preferably the table board I and the bench seats 2 may be provided with trans verse cleats 9- and I0, respectively, midway between the end cleats thereof, as shown in Fig. 4 between which and the end cleats the end supports of the units may be nested when the units are collapsed and also serving to reinforce the table top and bench seats at points midway of their ends.
As shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 I have provided means for bracing the end supports 3 and 4. Said means includes a diagonally disposed brace II which is hinged at I2 at a point near the intersection of the support members to each of the similar supports 3 or 4 as by means of a screw eye while the other end of each brace is hinged at [3 to a cross head [4 free to slide in but not to turn in a slot in the lower face of the table. The
table top I, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, may be channelled as at l5 to receive longitudinal members H, I! having channels l8, I3 therein in which the crossheads M are slidable but not rotatable. Slots l9, l9 are formed between top flanges 20, 26 through which screws 2| are extended. Said screws also have heads 22 and flanges 23. Plates 24 are provided with a guide 24a, Fig. 7, sliding in slots 1-9 and are interposed between the flanges 23 and portions 20 whereby when the screws are tightened in crossheads l4 the friction'between the crossheacls and the portions will hold the braces at a desired angle for properly holding the Thus, when my structure is constructed as shown and described, it may be readily collapsed and folded into a comp-act package, after which it and suitable accompanying benches may be table so as to fold-inwardly thereagainst when the supports 3 or 4 in either extended or retracted positions. 7 v
It is apparent that when the supports 3, for
instance, are extended to asplane at right angles 7 'to that of the table top I, the crossheads M will have been moved to the utmost position toward the corresponding end of the top and when the screw-' 2' l is tightened the brace II will be effective for supporting the table against collapse. But when screws 21 areloosened and the supports 3 crime folded downwardly against the top 1 or seats 2 the cro's's he'ads will slide inwardly in their grooves l8, side by side while braces ll will .rest in the planes of the members 3 urges the case may be. If screws 21 are then tightened the members 3 and '4 will not become displaced from their retracted positions.
' In Fig. -2 I have shown an optional means of bracing the end supports 3 and 4 which includes a di agonal bar 25 secured at 2'6'to said supports and 'attached a t-Z-I to the lower side of the table tap "I or the seats 2 as by means of a screw or 1 lit/herein thetabl'e carries a plate 3! held by screwsfs'z andla threaded-studs? fixed t0 the plate so as t ieci'vea wing nut 34, whereby a foot 35 of Fe, brace 25 may be held between said plate amisaia nut.
I prefer to so position the members 2 8 and 33 '{tli'at when braces 25 are detached from and held on members 2 8 which extend through holes "36 the braces, thesupports 3 and 4 may be held in the collapsed positions shown in Figs. 2, 3, 4 and H into members 28.
with studs 33 screwed at least partially table is collapsed, a pair of parallel guides of hollow cross section secured to the bottom surface of the table and having slots formed in the bottom walls'thereof, crossheads slidable in the channels of said guides, elements borne by said c'rossheads and having portions extended through said slots for locking said crossheads on said guides when said elements are appropriately actuated, and braces hinged to said supports and toysaid crossheads for holding said supports in erect positions to support said table.
2. A folding table structure as characterized in claim 1 wherein each of said supports includes two members secured together and crossed at a point intermediate of the ends thereof and said braces are hinged to each support at points near the intersection of its crossed members. 5 x 3.- A folding table structure as characterized in claim lwherein the bottom side of said table is formed with a longitudinal channel midway between the lateral margins of the table and said guides are seated in-saidcha'nnel with their bottom walls flush with the bottom surface of the table so that said supports when collapsed will lie in contact with the table.
